The journey comes to an end.

We arrived in Singapore last evening after a 13.5 hour flight. Our plane left Heathrow at 10 pm so we had a full last day in London. We had a great time in London and the weather was very kind to us. One day was quite hot but I didn't dare complain! We enjoyed the stage musical Jersey Boys. After the show we went for a wander around Soho and Westend; boy it was busy. There are a lot of theatres in the area so I guess it is nearly always busy at night. So our days were filled up doing most of the museums and galleries, they were all really easy to get to, the underground is very good and very efficent. We really enjoyed the British Museum, massive place. The Egyptian section was great, ... read more

London

We arrived in London yesterday afternoon. We had a wonderful couple of days with May and Terry in Liverpool. They took us on a Beatle driving tour and showed us the houses that they grew up in and Strawberry Fields and Eleanor Rigby's grave. Terry was a great guide, it was a shame that it rained the whole time. They also took us to the Liverpool cathedral, one of the largest in Europe, which is very impressive. We have had great weather here in London so we are making the most of it and have spent 8 hours today out and about. First we stopped off at Buk Palace and we didn't realise it but it was time for the changing of the guards. We didn't see much because of the hundreds of people crowding along ... read more

Keswick

Well we have had a few one night stops on the Western side of Scotland. We really liked the Isle of Skye. I didn't think the scenery could get any better but we saw some amazing hills and went on some roads that I would call goat tracks. The roads were only wide enough for one car with little passing places every hundredfold hundred metres. If you meet another car either one has to back up to make room to pass. Very interesting driving, thank goodness it was Graeme driving! It was well worth the drive just to see the hills and valleys. We spent a night at the seaside town of Oban, it was lovely and nice weather for a good walk. On the way south we stopped at a castle ruin called Castle Kilchurn, ... read more

Edinburgh

We had a great 3 night stay in Edinburgh. We were very lucky to stay in our friend Fiona's unit. It is right on the Royal Mile and very close to everything. It is on the fifth floor and has fantastic views across the city. I will post some photos and you will see that it has a turret, it was a great place to stay. We went out on the turret a couple of times...a bit scary. The Olympic Torch came to town while we were there, lots of flags and excited people. It did a bit of a parade through the streets and then up to Edinburgh Castle. The weather was very kind to us and it didn't rain for 3 days, it was almost balmy at certain times....well almost. We really enjoyed our ... read more

Yorkshire

We are staying in a small village called Lamesley , it is just north of Durham and Newcastle. We are here tonight and we head up to Edinburgh tomorrow. We had a lovely time in York despite the weather. We stayed in a small B&B very close to the city centre. Our room was fairly small but it was in a great position for us to see everthing on foot. York is not a good city to drive in, the traffic was a bit of a nightmare. We had some good weather while we were there. The mornings were lovely but the afternoons clouded over and of course rained. One afternoon we went on a 2 hour historical walking tour, it was so interesting. It is hard to believe that York is 2,000 years old. So ... read more

Box

Here we are in the lovely village of Box. We took the local bus into Bath yesterday. Everyone was excited about the Jubilee, it was a shame that it rained most of the day. We went to the Roman Baths for a few hours, it was very interesting. The Romans started building them about two thousand years ago. It is quite amazing that a lot of the area is still intact. We didn't realise just how big it was and how many levels the whole area had, very clever those Romans!!!! We went on a bit of a drive this morning around some of the area. We have a GPS in the car.....thank goodness..just plug in the info and it tells us where to go. We went to a small National Trust village called Lacock...some bits ... read more

Goodbye Ireland

Published: June 4th 2012Europe » Ireland » County Cork

We are sitting at Cork airport waiting to fly to Bristol. No rain today, the sun came out earlier. We had a lovely drive to the village of Kinsale yesterday. It is a pretty little place on the sea. Lots of brightly coloured cottages with pretty flower boxes on their windows. Cork is quite a big city, pop 500,000. It was a major port in days gone by. It was the last port of call by the Titanic before it sailed to its disaster. We had an interesting drive to the airport this morning. The Cork marathon was on today and they had closed a lot of the city streets. Our taxi driver was not happy...not that we could understand a lot of what he said. The traffic was a nightmare, it was lucky we had ... read more

Dingle Peninsula and Cork

Published: June 3rd 2012Europe » Ireland » County Cork

We have had a couple of lovely days driving from Galway to Dingle. It has been raining quite a lot but that's Ireland! We drove the scenic route along the coast, it was a long drive but certainly worth it for the spectacular views. Some of the roads are very narrow and curvy, there is no clearance on the side of the road. There are stone walls, undergrowth and big trees hanging over the road. We came across a few tractors and a few wandering sheep. The Dingle area is absolutely beautiful, even with the rain. We stayed at a little village called Annascaul, pop just over 200. Our B&B was really good, the young couple who run it were so friendly and helpful. It rained all the way to Cork yesterday, quite heavy at times. ... read more

Dublin

Here we are in sunny Dublin, no not really it is raining. It was a lovely day yesterday when we arrived. We went for a big walk around the city, it was really busy, lots of people and tourist buses. The place we are staying in is delightful, it has that cosy Irish feel to it, so much character. Our room is huge with a massive window and it has very a high ceiling. Graeme says this is the best one yet. I have a 100 percent strike rate so far, we have been very lucky with our accommodation. Well, I have to tell you about our visit to the red light district in Amsterdam, that was an experience and a half. Lots of girls in all shapes and sizes standing at little doors and lots ... read more

Amsterdam

We are in Amsterdam for a couple of nights. This is a really lovely city with very different architecture. The canals are beautiful and most of the streets beside the canals are lined with trees. Cycling is very popular here, bikes everywhere. We don't have to be careful of the cars, it's the people on bikes we have to watch. We have seen some parents with 2 kids in a cart at the front and a baby in a seat on the handle bars! The hotel we are staying in is like an old house. Our room is on the second floor with some very winding steep stairs. Would not want to have too many red wines!!!!! We are going on a canal cruise today for 1.5 hours. We are a bit sick of walking so ... read more
