Tiraspol, Transnistria - A Real Life Communist Breakaway Republic
Published: July 14th 2010Europe » Moldova » Transnistria » Tiraspol“Let me tell you a Russian joke,” said Madhia, the beautiful Moldovan woman who, for the last few hours, had been acting as our guide in Transnistria. “It is about a man with a fifty-centremetre dick who meets a witch.” As Madhia told the joke, Michael and I listened, all the while coming to terms with the fact that we’d almost finished our day-trip to a genuine breakaway republic. Indeed the first time I’d even heard of Transnistria was on a BBC program entitled Holidays in the Danger Zone, and now we were sat in a bar there! ”Because of the size of his dick,” continued Madhia, in that sexy accent only women from Eastern Europe can deliver, “no woman was willing to marry him and so he was forced to see a witch.” By the ... read more

Got there no sign of them so we looked up the terminal where the minibus leaves for Tiraspol, found it and bought ... read more
Transdneistria - A Soviet Museumpiece.
Published: August 3rd 2006Europe » Moldova » Transnistria » TiraspolDay 50, 20th July. Sângera - Benderi (TRANSDNIESTRA) - Tiraspol - Stepova (UKRAINE) Andrew swam across the lake early to wish us well on our way, and we carried on east along the road in hot weather again. The roads were different than we were used to. Virtually empty of people, no horses and carts, no workers in the fields. Just before Benderi the landscape became wild and completely unused; then, a checkpoint with a Russian tank guarding it, we were waved through. Then the border control of the self-proclaimed Trandniestran Moldovan Republic. It was a time-capsule of the Soviet Union, hammer and sickle emblems on the guards caps and also on the coins we found out later. There were a collection of little huts, and in one we were ‘sold’ transit visas for $5 each! ... read more
