After our guided tour of Pienza (guided by Eugenio's mother) we got on the bus and headed to Montepulciano. When we arrived in Montepulciano we stepped out and almost got blown away by the fierce winds that confronted us. After we all got used to leaning into the wind the teachers told us that we had an hour for lunch so we all went our separate ways. Most of the year 9 group stayed near to chiesa di san borgio, the teachers and a mixture of age groups went to a bar to eat and keep warm. While at the bar Elise, Josh, Matt, Pat, Luke and myself all got a deliciously hot piece of pizza which helped us warm up after the freezing temperatures outside. While eating our pizza and chocolate we saw a few ... read more

Day 10 Wow did we sleep like babies last night. Finally got up and had a short walk through town to find the internet, but closed. It was off to discover the tuscan countryside. At the bottom of the hill going out of Montepulciano we ran across a 500 yr old church called Santa Maria ( an abbey) was was quite not complete. It was still a beautiful sight. We went to bagno de vignori and searched around and on ward to San Quirco and found a very old and rundown Rocca (fortress) It was quite unnerving as the rules for safety a quite a bit different here than at home. Once we got to the top there was great view of the valley. The stairs were an open fire escape style that went straight up. Everyone ... read more

I think I forgot to mention that we had originally only planned to stay one night in Tuscany. That was until we actually got to Le Pozze di Lecchi. The clincher was that first night by the fireplace. It was cozy, romantic, quiet and we had the whole place to ourselves. Midway through our 6th hand of Uno, Gus got up and booked another night. Another great benefit of traveling off-season, your room will most likely be available. They were happy to have us and we got all excited at the prospect of another night in the country. That is something that we miss but couldn't put our finger on. For all of it's glory, Florence has no real parks or green areas. The first time it dawned on me was when we were happily chowing ... read more

Woke up this morning to a beautiful vista outside our window. The hills of Tuscany are very beautiful!!! Sant' Antonio is a beautiful and peaceful spot the views are spectacular no matter where you look. I did my yoga this morning out on the patio, watching the sun come up. How much better can it get? The pace is much different from Rome in that we have slowed down considerably. Nico, our host, has both wines and olive oils from Sant' Antonio. We have already sampled some of each and they are great. Wayne went for a hike up the hill behind us this morning hoping to get a good vantage point for a picture. On his way he ran into 2 men out hunting for their Sunday dinner - Wayne survived but the pheasant and ... read more

How does one top climbing a mountain and having a picnic in the sun? Tricky, I know. After a bit of discussion over the usual morning coffee, we settled on Montepulciano. Two friends of Lynn’s called Tina and Wayne were staying at the castle with us, so they came along on this adventure. My very important job as we drove over to the town was to find the lunch spot. This is a responsibility that I did not take lightly, so with reference to the Michelin guidebook and a long discussion with Lynn, we decided on a place called La Grotta that was just outside the town. The five of us sat outside in the most gorgeous garden and had salad and pasta along with the vino nobile, the wine that is produced in Montepulciano. It ... read more
