We knew the day was coming -- time to leave our little paradise. We have thoroughly enjoyed our time at the beach in Tuscany. We have lived like the locals riding our bikes to town; enjoying the views from inside the city walls; walking the beach; eating wild boar, gelato, spaghetti and pizza; swimming in the Sea; and just soaking up the atmosphere. The fragrance of all the flowers is very sweet. It is a peaceful life here. But it is time to move on. As much as we like it here, we have decided to leave a day earlier than planned. That way we will have a day and a half to explore Florence instead of just a half day. And that really won't be enough. But we will see what we can. So goodbye ... read more

It was time to go exploring. Our destination--an ancient walled city in the hills of Tuscany. Vetulonia has a museum displaying artifacts from the Etruscan civilization. The Etruscans lived in the area before the Romans, about 400 or 500 B.C. The Romans destroyed much of the Etruscan history but claimed some of their practices as their own. Some of the artifacts were in extremely good condition. Imagine what it would be like to find an old pot full of coins dating back to the Roman times. Or finding a bronze helmet or spear head from before the time of the Romans. The hill town of Vetulonia is very small and peaceful. We enjoyed gazing out at the various vistas around the town. And again it was fun roaming the narrow streets. We continued on through the ... read more

Today we happened upon a restaurant having a special on one of the local delicacies--wild boar. Our two sons will appreciate the humor in that. We decided to give it a try. It was quite tasty, served huntsman style! After devouring the boar it was time to go back to the beach for a swim.... read more

We rode our bikes to town today to the weekly oudoor market. You could buy almost anything you need there. I bought a new dress and we found lots of fresh fruits and vegetables and some great roasted chicken and sausages. Then the next stop was up the hill to check out the castle. You cannot go inside the castle because someone lives there. But you can walk around the streets of the ancient town which are enclosed by the city walls. People live in the buildings within the walls. As we wandered around the narrow streets it is fun to imagine what it would be like to live there. After trying out one of the local treats, gelatto (Italian ice cream) it was time to go home and enjoy all the great stuff we bought ... read more

We have arrived at Castiglione della Pescaia, Italy- It is a small beach community on the Mediterranean Sea in the region of Tuscany. This is our first home exchange on the trip. Wow! what a place. We may just stay here for the whole two weeks and forget doing any sight seeing. This place is amazing. It is a beachfront community in the countryside with pine trees galore. Each property owner also has their own space on the beach. Most of the spaces are covered cabanas. And there are very few people around. It is our idea of paradise! The town of Castiglione della Pescaia is a small fishing village with a long wide beach promenade. There are pizza restaurants everywhere you look! The marina looks interesting and there is a castle on the hill overlooking ... read more

If, your of a nervous disposition, or have no interest in insects , skip the next couple of paragraphs. In the first week s of our voyage Ali was delving in to one of the storage boxes, she screamed, as she had picked up a cling film box with an earwig, which she promptly hurled at my head - with Earwig inside. I mentioned to her , that as we head south, the bugs were going to get bigger and more intrusive. I was pleased though today, that on seeing an Earwig, she picked it up between her forefinger and thumb and threw it out the Bongo door. Unfortunately I was in the door – has she got something against me? The downside of camping - of any sort. is that you eventually have to co-exist ... read more

Well I am already falling behind on my travel blog, oops. So for the sake of time, this entry will be about my first week in Italy. As I last mentioned, we (Andrea, Cecilia, Gioia, Gabri and I) crammed into their small car to drive the 3 hours to the coast of Tuscany, and we stopped in Siena on the way there. Andrea and Cecilia felt that this was a decent-length road trip, so they were shocked when I told them how my 4 roommates and I had driven across the States for 15+ hours in one day to reach Colorado on our way to the Grand Canyon. They just couldn’t believe that we didn’t fly straight there, but driving there was a whole other adventure besides the actual hiking in the Canyon! (our engine ... read more
