As we had exhausted the Cable Cars, Funiculars, Chair Lifts and Travelators in Ortisei, we thought we would turn our attention to the next hapless town. We chose the town of Selva Wolkenstein, two villages further up the Val Gardena. First up we caught the cable car up to Chiampinoi, then walked a considerable distance along the plateau to the base of the imposing Langkofel Mountain. From there we caught another cable car up to the high pass between Langkofel and Plattkofel Mountains. I think this was our favourite cable car, as it was a tall narrow box just fitting two people, where Kim had to first jump in as it moved, then I had to run after it with my backpack loaded up, and jump in, and then have the door slammed on us by ... read more

Or take the Cable Cars, Funiculars, Chair Lifts, and Travelators on offer at Ortisei instead. The valley in which we are staying is called the Val Gardena. We have our maps, the sun is shining, the forecast temperature for today is 17 degrees, and we are ready to climb the mountains. Our accommodation has provided us with free bus tickets for the duration of our stay, to take us into the town of Ortisei, from where we will launch our assault on the Dolomite Mountains. In the pasture next to our accommodation are two Llamas, one white and one brown. When we reached the town, we purchased a three day Gardena Pass, which provides unlimited access to Cable Cars, Funiculars and Chair Lifts in the Val Gardena region. First up we caught a Cable Car up ... read more

With a long drive in front of us today, Lake Bled in Slovenia to Ortisei in the Dolomite Mountains of Northern Italy, we headed out early at 8.30am after having an early breakfast and checking out of our apartment. First stop was two small lakes just inside the Italian border, at Lago di Fusine. The conditions were perfect for photos of the mirror reflection lake with the snow capped mountains in the background. After taking a lot of pics, then having a Long Black Coffee, we jumped back in the car and headed further west to the small hillside town of San Nicolo di Comelico. San Nicolo di Comelico was featured on an episode of one of our favourite TV shows, Italy unpacked, with British art historian Andrew Graham-Dixon and Italian Chef Giorgio Locatelli. The church ... read more

We leave the Dolomites having achieved our mission. The highlight of our stay in Corvara has been the alpine plants, especially the gentian. The other memories we’ll take away with us are the stunning scenery and our wonderful accommodation. In a week from now this area will be open for the Summer holidays. We found last night that some restaurants won’t open until next week. Instead of skiers the cyclists and hikers will arrive. After reading our blogs the botanists will arrive as well. After last night’s thunderstorm somewhere in the mountains it is blue skies and sunshine. Our first challenge today is negotiating one more pass, Passo Gardena. Once over this pass we leave the Badia area and head for Bolzano. The descent out of the Dolomites has us following river valleys. We continue to ... read more

We wake to another fine morning. The temperatures remain pleasantly mild here in the mountains. Yesterday we were more concerned about sunburn than hypothermia. Today looks the same but thunderstorms are forecast for later in the day. So, instead of the leisurely start to the day we’ll go sightseeing and be back before the weather changes. Today’s trip will follow the circuit that the cyclists used on Sunday but in reverse. It includes three mountain passes with one reaching 2165 metres. Looking at Google Maps there will be plenty of hairpin bends. We expect to see some great scenery. The road passes through part of a national park so we also hope to catch a glimpse of more alpine flowers. Who knows, today we might find the blue alpine gentian. As it is Tuesday, and a ... read more

We look out of the window this morning and it’s not a sky we had hoped to see. There is low cloud covering the tops of the mountains. This was not part of today’s plan or the forecast. All might be different after breakfast. One of the reasons for coming to this area was to hunt for the elusive blue alpine gentian. To get to the area in which they are growing we need to get above 2000 metres, we are currently at 1500 metres. We have some choices, take the gondola located next to the apartment, walk, or drive to the chairlift that will take us further up the mountain. By the time we have had breakfast the cloud has gone leaving a brilliant blue sky. We pack our mountaineering gear and head off for ... read more

Corvara, what a place to wake up in. Bright sun, blue sky and surrounded by mountains. Below us is the town that looks like it has been transported from the setting of a model railway. We pinch ourselves just to check it is all real. Our fellow guests are from Italy, Germany and France. Today we plan to relax and soak in the local atmosphere. We set off for a walk down into the town. It doesn’t take us long to realize this day is different. The town is swarming with cyclists and not a motorized vehicle in sight. The amount of colourful lycra and expensive cycles tells us something big is happening. People of all ages pass us by as they head up the zig zag road out of town. The e-bikes zoom up the ... read more

After a lot of flat country and high temperatures it is off to the mountains today. So far we have been very lucky with the weather. The raincoats have not been unpacked since we left New Zealand. After the temperatures in the low 30s for the last month the forecast temperatures in the Dolomites are showing high teens to low 20s. What a relief. We pack the car, stop for diesel, buy some lunch and head north. The early part of the drive takes us through flat farm land. We can see the hills in the distance. It is a glorious day for driving. After leaving the flat country we start the gentle meandering through some hilly country. We stop for lunch under a tree, near a river, surrounded by rugged hills. It reminds us of ... read more

Europe » Italy » Trentino Alto Adige » Bolzano May 26th 2017

Today I did a lot of driving, mostly northward on from Ravenna to Bolzano, Italy. Bolzano is located at the foot of the Italian Alps and historically has been a good place to "rest up" before tackling the Brenner Pass to Innsbruck (in Austria) and Munich (in Germany). After driving across the flat land of central northern Italy, I was greeted by the foot hills of the Alps rising up to meet me (see photo). I arrived in Bolzano and checked into the hotel. Then I took a little walk around the town center. From the main square you can see a "hill" on the right side (see photo), and I know that the snow-capped peaks are just behind it. Bolzano is located in an area known as the Tyrol. It is a German-speaking area that ... read more

Europe » Italy » Trentino Alto Adige » Rovereto October 29th 2016
