The Dolomites
Our destination is getting closer. After a lot of flat country and high temperatures it is off to the mountains today. So far we have been very lucky with the weather. The raincoats have not been unpacked since we left New Zealand. After the temperatures in the low 30s for the last month the forecast temperatures in the Dolomites are showing high teens to low 20s. What a relief. We pack the car, stop for diesel, buy some lunch and head north.
The early part of the drive takes us through flat farm land. We can see the hills in the distance. It is a glorious day for driving. After leaving the flat country we start the gentle meandering through some hilly country. We stop for lunch under a tree, near a river, surrounded by rugged hills. It reminds us of the West Coast of NZ when traveling along the Haast River towards the coast. We get the feeling we are entering some spectacular country.
As we climb we pass through little villages clinging to the side of the valley. At one point we see groups of houses high above the valley in a seemingly impossible location. How to get there we are left
The Dolomites
Our lunch stop wondering. We stop in the village of Alleghe for a walk and an ice cream and to use their fabulous facilities. Pity about the parking fee. This village beside a lake would be swarming with skiers in the winter.
As we head further into the mountains the roads are getting quite busy with both motor cyclists and cyclist, recreational and serious. The road twists and turns opening up the most spectacular vistas. The on board photographer is being kept extremely busy. Eventually it is decided to put the cameras away and just enjoy the experience. What an experience. We get the feeling we are going to be more than satisfied with our four nights in the Dolomites.
We reach the Campolongo Pass and descend the final hairpin section of the road into Corvara, our destination. We park in the town, get out of the car, and stand and stare. Tall rugged bare mountains surround us. What an incredible sight. We both agree we have landed in Paradise. This is everything we had hoped for and we are not even at the apartment yet. Around us motorcyclists and cyclists are arriving from their trip over the passes into this
valley. We watch as cyclists ascend the pass out of town. We suspect some have e-bikes but others are either very strong and fit or have great gearing on their bikes. They just seem to whizz up the hill.
When we booked our accommodation we were not sure about access by car. We need not worry, except for the steep and precarious driveway, there is plenty of parking. Our hostess is up the mountain somewhere but will arrive in twenty minutes, not a problem.
Once checked in we agree we will be very happy here with great views of the town below and the mountains all around. The sky is clear blue and jet trails criss cross at will. Tonight’s forecasted temperature is 4 degrees!
