I know we should be used to it by now, but the ear splitting blasts from the fireworks awaken us again on the dot of nine o’clock, followed shortly thereafter by the now seemingly daily ritual of the brass band parading glacially slowly down the street outside our apartment. I decide it’s time to find out a bit more about all of this so it’s off to consult the Google machine about the feast that we appear to have landed here in the middle of. Its official title is the Feast of the Most Holy Saviour of Cefalu. The actual feast day is tomorrow, so if the cannon blasts of the past few days are only a warm up we’d better invest in some ear muffs, and quickly. It celebrates the Transfiguration of Jesus, but legend ... read more

We’re woken at what feels like the crack of dawn by yet more fireworks, the noise from which would wake the dead. Midday we could understand, but a quick check of our watches confirms that it’s only 9am. We drift back into dreamland only to be reawoken a few minutes later by a noisy parade passing slowly, oh so slowly, down the narrow street in front of our apartment. We’re not quite sure exactly which patron Saint all this is supposed to be celebrating, but we assume whoever it was must have been an early riser. We’re awake now so we set off to climb the 300 or so metre high sheer cliff that towers over the town, up to Cefalu Castle. We pay the entry fee and are given tickets with bar codes on them ... read more

We decide it’s time for a morning on the beach. As we look down from our balcony we spy a shady patch of sand directly below us that doesn’t look to be too heavily occupied. The water’s patchy warm, but Issy seems to be struggling to find the patches. She tells me she doesn’t like that fish keep nibbling away at her feet. Don’t people pay a lot of money to subject themselves to just that in places like Bali, although I suppose it could be a bit different when you’re not expecting it. Giovanni has kindly provided us with a small orange rubber ball and two pink bats with pictures of Minnie Mouse on them. We hope these will contribute to the morning’s entertainment. The idea was for us to entertain each other, but the ... read more

It was a long day of travelling yesterday so we rest up and then set off exploring. It seems that our building is part of Cefalu’s history. It’s built over the Lavatoio Medievale, a wash house that was built way back in 1514. We look right down into it from the balcony outside our front door. …and that might also explain why Issy’s sleeping on the sofa bed in the living room while I decide to try to tough it out in the bedroom. No it’s not because she used the wash house and I didn’t; Giovanni told us that he’s not allowed to put an air conditioner in the bedroom because of the building’s historic heritage, so it‘s a tad warm in there at night, and during the day for that matter … you could ... read more

Today we‘ve got a long day of travelling south to the town of Cefalu on the north coast of Sicily. We’re having a bit of trouble getting the GPS on our trusty hire car to work so we decide instead to follow our noses thinking that we can’t go too far wrong if we just hug the coast. Road signs are handy too. Slovenian must be a very efficient language; it’s spelling of Trieste is Trst, yep, you just leave out all the vowels. I’m glad our beloved Emma isn’t Slovenian. Maybe following our noses wasn’t such a great idea. We’re fairly sure our route to the airport isn’t supposed to take us through the middle of downtown Trieste. It’s now morning rush hour so it’s just as well we’ve got a bit of time up ... read more

Off early while the temperature was still cool. Via Roma to the Palermo Centrale Stazione. €5.60 pp single trip 67km to Cefalu...44mins with a few stops. Great views of the coastline & holiday places. Sat with a couple from San Diego who had been to stay at Wainui beach in Gisborne with a couple who happened to buy Jim's car! Also their friend attends the same Dentist Conference that Emily attends in San Diego. Into surfing big time so out came the Mickey Dora story. Scorching weather by the time we got there....far too hot for the beach!!..we stuck to the shade & cool like most other sensible people. A little gem of a place....old town set under the Rock (Cefalu Rocco). Quite overbearing. Cefalu's main resource was fishing. The Norman Chiesa 1131...sitting at the highest ... read more

We woke up Monday morning to quite the thunderstorm with accompanying downpour. About 10AM we saw on our computer that the part that we had been waiting since last Tuesday had been delivered. Just had to wait for it to let up some for us to get off the boat and pick it up. Bob got the part and I continued on to the weekly Monday market and hit up 2 of the stores in town for supplies as we were counting on the part to work so we could leave the next day. Bob had to make a few modifications to make it all work, but fortunately when we turned the engine on and checked the battery level, everything worked as it was suppose to – success! This now meant we were definitely going to ... read more

Today we have to farewell our wonderful hostess. It has been a delight staying here at Rustico San Leonardo, the name of our apartment. It has been well designed with great outdoor seating where we have breakfast each morning or drinks and nibbles late afternoon. Our hostess has been more than generous. With her lack of English and our lack of Italian we had a very happy relationship. The daughter was a great help when she visited. Our three days were not enough but we felt sorry for those who arrived late afternoon and then prepared to leave on an early flight next morning from the nearby airport. We are sure they didn’t appreciate their stay as we have. We have a long drive across Northern Sicily to Milazzo. If we drive the toll road the ... read more

The Normans did not only conquer Britain in 1066 but were as far south as Sicily in the 12 Century. KIng Roger ll crops up everywhere here and seems to have been a great builder ... the World Heritage has recognised religious and civic sites in Cefalu , Palermo and Monreale as special in that there are amalgamations of religions of Western, Byzantine and Islamic cultures. In addition Cefalu is a lovely seaside town with narrow street thronged with locals and tourists. Cafes and restaurants abound and there are little shops selling everything from Italian leather handbags and ceramics to sundried tomatoes and pesto! Tucked away down one street is a mediaeval laundry site where women would gather and do their washing as well as have a good old chat I am sure !! The water ... read more
