Another day that the morning is free. A group of us have been so excited to go to the rose garden, but once we got there, it was closed. The garden is filled with all different types of roses that is free to the public and I was really excited to walk around the garden. We were all disappointed, so we decided to check out the orange garden just up the hill. In total, there was one tree with 3 oranges on it. However, the view of the city was amazing! Also around the orange garden is the key hole of Rome. This place has been on my list of to-dos before coming to Rome. There is a key hole that had a beautiful view of St. Peter's. The expectation of this "must do" was set ... read more

Today was a weird day. It was the first day that I did not have class in the morning. So, a small group of us went to Il Convento dei Cappuccino. This church, museum, and crypt have been on my "to-do list" for Rome. The Ossuary crypt was made from bones. There were about 7 different rooms with different designs and concepts. Seeing the bones in an ornate design was very unsettling. Over 3,700 bodies were used to create the crypt. No words could describe the feeling of seeing these bones laid out. Of course me being a nursing major, I was looking at the different bones and naming them. After the church, we went one mentor stop over to Spanga to see the iconic Spanish Steps. It was nice because it wasn't busy, but it ... read more

I have now completed 3 weeks of my classes, and since my art course is only 3 weeks long, today was our last day. However, my professor has some museums in mind for Florence. Today, we tried to take a regional train to Trastevere, but it was not faster. In fact, it took us about 2 hours to get to our destination, whereas, the bus would have taken us 45 minutes. With the delay, we only saw 2/4 churches that were planned for today. First, we saw Santa Maria in Trastevere, then we saw Santa Cecilia in Trastevere. When we arrived to Santa Cecilia, we noticed a lot of people dressed up, and when we walked inside there was a wedding!! At first, we did not know what to do because my professor really wanted us ... read more

Today we got to sleep in! I didn't have to meet my professor until 9am at the bus stop! We went to the Gallery of Modern Art. The building was very cool and some of the artworks were very interesting. However, I still don't get why a piece of block cement hanging on a wall is amazing or a solid black canvas is "well done" or "amazing work." But hey, I was open minded! Once we got the the second floor of the museum, there were more paintings and photos that I enjoyed. For instance, we saw Claude Monet's famous painting series of the water lilies. Also, we saw a Van Gogh painting, which was beautiful! Luckily, today was not a bad day for walking and we even got back to campus at a reasonable time. ... read more

Can't believe my second week of classes has come and gone! Today, we got to sleep in a little (YAY) and went to a few churches and a museum. We visited Santa Maria della Vittoria and saw a Bernini sculpture. Then, we walked down the road to Church of Santa Susanna and San Carlo of the Four Fountains. The size of San Carlo is the same as ONE column in St. Peter's Basilica!! Lastly, we went to St. Andrew of the Quirinale Hill. Then, we headed to Palazzo Barberini, which had a wonderful collection of artwork. Both the exterior and interior of the house were beautiful, and it did not even feel like we were downtown in Rome. We saw more Caravaggio pieces, which have been my favorite pieces to date. Overall, this is one of ... read more

Today was an early day! Our class went to Galleria Borghese, which took us about an hour to get to. The collection was beautiful! So far one of my favorite collection this trip. There were original Caravaggio and Bernini sculptures and paintings. Unfortunately, we only had 2 hours to explore, which was not enough time. Next, we walked to S. Maria dei Popolo church and saw more of Caravaggio's paintings. Then we went to the Pantheon, which is one of the largest domes standing in Rome. It was a lot of walking, but we were able to see many sites today. For dinner, a group and I went to a restaurant called Sant. Anna, which was a few blocks from Piazza Venezia. The food was amazing and not overpriced (which was good because Venice was expensive). ... read more

I can't believe that I have been in Italy for over a week now! It has all gone by so fast, and I feel like before I know it, I'll be back home. Today was a shorter day. We woke up early, and considering I got back to JFRC at 11:45 pm, you could say I was tired! We began the day at Sant'Agostino Church. There, we saw Caravaggio's Madonna di Loreto and more than a dozen of other famous sculptures and painters. Next, we went to San Luigi dei Francesi. On the way over to this church, we saw A LOT of the Italian military guards, probably given the events that occurred in London over the weekend. At this church, we saw 3 more paintings by Caravaggio - the Matts. After the churches, we headed ... read more

As the first week is coming to a close, today was my last day of classes! Tomorrow, I will be hopping on a train, EARLY morning, to spend the weekend in Venice!! Today was a quiet, yet long day. We went to Musei Capitoline, which is near the Colosseum and overlooks the Roman Forum. This museum had everything but the kitchen sink! From the few parts of the Colossus of Constantine to the Equestrian Statue of Marcus Aurelius and the She Wolf with Romulus and Remus. We spent about 5-6 hours in this museum. The guards were very rude to us because they did not want us taking notes about the art pieces or drawing, but we were allowed taking pictures and we were there to learn! They watched us like a hawk the whole time ... read more

Well, today was a long day of site seeing! We woke up early to get to Colosso before the big crowds came. We stopped first at St. Peter in Chains. Here, is the sculpture of Moses that Michaelangelo began designing. Also, we saw the chains that bounded St. Peter. Next, we went to the iconic Colosseum. Sadly, there were no gladiators dressed up, but they are a scam anyways! I had to do a research paper about the art history of the Colosseum, so I had to present to my class all that I have learned. The Colosseum was huge and truly amazing to see a place with a past of brutality. After the Colosseum, we went to the Roman Forum to see the Arch of Titus and other ruins. It was a hot day, and ... read more

It is day 3 in Rome, and I am in love with this city! This morning, we went to Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri. Formerly, this church was a Roman bath location for the public to bathe, but when the Popes took over Rome, they made this into a church. Also, we went to Museo Nazionale Romano at the Palazzo Massimo. This museum had a collection of Roman and Greek original or copied statues. The Romans were inspired by the Greek bronze statues and made replicas in marble. We were able to see the iconic disk thrower statue! The buses are super packed, and people will not let you on, so we decided to get some food. After, a few friends and I grabbed lunch at Lo e Marco Pizzeria, which was amazing! I ... read more
