A Roman ruin with cats, a church with a large dome, a church with a fake dome and more Sometimes we make short trips, often not longer than over a weekend, to major cities in Europe. We have made trips to Paris, London and Berlin for instance. This March we decided to visit Rome in Italy. There is so much worth seeing in Rome that there is no way you can see more than a tiny fraction of it in a weekend like the one we had. We decided to have a "go" at some famous sites that are easily accessible and on top of that see a few less famous sites that for one reason or another appeal to us. Largo di Torre Argentina This attraction is an old Roman ruin. This sight could be ... read more

Before meeting Fiona I had started to save up for my next big adventure. We have talked about buying a house together, taking on her two kids and potentially having a child together. Once all this happens, big travel adventures will be limited. I have travelled and seen quite a bit of Latin America and North America but Asia is somewhere I really wanted to go whilst the opportunity was still there. Whenever I talk to people about travel, most people travel to Asia so I always feel I don't have much to talk about on this continent as my focus has always been Latin America. I talk to Fiona and ask if she'll be ok if I travel to Asia alone because I feel if I don't do this trip I'll have regrets and would ... read more

There you go ...what a finish to the holiday. An effort on C Line Metro to A Line Metro to B Line Metro...the result a stop at San Paolo Basilica (St Paul). We were quite amazed. Was one of the four Papal seats in Rome. The original Basilica was built as a monument over the second burial of St Paul by the insistence of Constantine (in 324 AD). Then a second Basilica was built around the first by Theodosius (389) thus making it 'St Paul Outside the Wall's'. The first burial of St Paul after his beheading was on the road to Ostia Antica (original establishment of Rome by the sea). My observation is his 'means of cruxifiction' (by Nero) is why his skull is at St Giovanni Basilica (St John). In 2004 to 2009 pilgrims ... read more

The change over from the new C Line metro is not quite finished yet so there is a 1km walk to the A Line at St Giovanni. It was sunny today with a high of 17degrees so we took the C Metro from Mirti to St Giovanni. The St Giovanni Basilica is fabulous especially when your'e not expecting it. It is the most ancient early Christain Basilica and was built by Constantine in 313AD. The skulls of St Peter & St Paul are kept as relics here. It was a seat of the papacy before it was relocated to the Vatican. Inside the basilica are buried 22 Popes. It is just as grand as St Peters Basilica. We continued on to walk around the Coloseum and Circus Maximus (600m long). Still hoards of people sightseeing...... read more

Fabulous Rome...arrived in the dark and settled in fairly quickly as we are staying in the same apartment as at the beginning of our trip. It rained first day out so we just mooched around our area and so today we headed into the centre and got off the tram at Termini. Walked down Nazionale street to the 'wedding cake'. There are still a huge amount of tourists around even with the temperatures only reaching 15degrees. Fighting our way up and down the footpaths and through the traffic we took refuge a couple of times in a church or two. Started to drizzle but we kept walking on to Nuova and then to Popolo and onto the Spanish steps. By now it was 2pm so we hit the Metro at 'Spagna' to Termini and then the ... read more

All packed up....just small bags but still have to get it right for the plane... Out at midday, tram to centre (Gare Thiers) and made our way to the bus stop for the Aeroport bus 99....every half hour from the train station at 6€ ea. Half hour trip with only 2 stops... oops make that 3...we got off at the wrong terminal and had to make our way over to the other (free shuttle). We were early so our plane terminal had not been acknowledged by the airline untill we had actually arrived. I'm not sure why they do this when the airlines work from he same area all the time....may be security. So with our packed lunch we sat and waited in the lovely Nice airport. 16.45 flight. The security at the airport was the ... read more

No wrong turns heading to Rome though we did back track a bit to catch a fast train out of Firenze (Florence) to arrive in the city early afternoon. Our first rain of the vacation catches us leaving the station so we have to dodge puddles that threaten to grow into ponds. The driver assures us we are on the right bus, makes 2 stops, and then jumps off himself, signaling he would return soon. After 10 minutes, he does, then circles back to the bus station and starts our route again. Feeling just a little confused, but dry, we count the stops while learning the names of neighborhoods along our route, including the tourist mecca, the Roman Forum and Coliseum, on our way to the Trastevere neighborhood. With both of our birthdays in the same week in October we decided to take a few days away from Tsamaya and do a little in country traveling. We have been very happy with the people and facilities at the marina in Gaeta, the ability to walk around the town which is only steps away, but the extra bonus of this location is the ease of getting to the train station in Formia so you can be connected to anywhere. Just outside the entrance to the marina is where the bus stop is to catch the bus for takes for a short ride to the train station. Our plans were to take the train to Rome, stay there for a few days and then continue on to a hill town in Umbria called Orvieto. We had ... read more

My train trip from Florence to Rome began with me trying to convince a man that he was in my seat… The seat by the window. The one colour coded (seat five orange, is the orange seat next to the window; seat six red – his ticketed seat, was the red aisle seat). But he wouldn’t have it. I think my ‘pissed off’ face may have surfaced, but I can’t be sure. Across the aisle and up one seats eleven and twelve were both vacant, so I sat there…. And glared. When the conductor came and got my ticket reference code and asked where I was supposed to be sitting I glared at him again while I explained that he was sitting in my seat. I arrived in Rome’s central train station and my accommodation, Domus ... read more

I got up at 6:30 this morning to see the sunrise over the Colosseum but it wasn't very good, I did see 2 different couples getting wedding photos while there wasn't many people around. came back to the room and woke Esther for breakfast which came to our room at 8 and then we headed off for a walk around Rome we went back to the trevi fountain and it wasnt as busy as last night, and then went to the Piaza Collona a large column depicting war victories and then to the Pantheon where there was an amazing cellist playing a cello so we bought his disc before looking in the Pantheon which appears to be a church but was once a Roman Temple. then to the Piazza Navona which has fountains similar to the ... read more
