Surprise!! I decided to make an additional BLOG entry from the cruise ship, since the only ferry I have been on was going to the Toronto Island. Plus, it was like a little town in itself, since the trip took 22 hours. Overview: We decided to take a cruise ship (named Grimaldi), from Rome to Barcelona. This required us to take the train from Rome to Civitavecchia (1 hr, 20 min.), where the port is located. We got to Civitavecchia and were pleasantly in awe of the little port town and the overwhelming view of the Mediterranean....simply breathtaking. We arrived at the ship 2 hours early for check-in hoping that we could drop-off our luggage and tour around Civitavecchia a bit. NOT!! Day three: Vatican City tour then transfer to the ship. I had made arrangements with Angel Tours of Rome to have a private 4 hour tour of the Vatican museums, including the Sistine chapel, and St. Peters. They were then going to provide a driver to take us to the ship. I thought the driver was picking us up a the hotel, but when I went to prepay 3 days before we left the US, I was told that we had to get to the Vatican ourselves, unless we wanted to pay more. No problem. Our HOHO ticket was for 24 hours, so we would catch the 8:30am bus and get there by our 9:30 meeting time. We got up, had a nice breakfast. Rome experienced a major rain fall in the early morning hours as a cold front came into the area. Some of the group, not yet time adjusted to the local time decided to arise early and make the most of the morning in Rome before we departed to catch the Pacific Princess in Civitavecchia. Rich found a coffee bar across the street from the hotel at the Esquilina Market (similar to Seattle’s Pike Place), with wonderful displays of fresh vegetables, fish and real butchers waiting to custom cut meats for customers. Two tasty cappuccino’s later, the day was off to a great start! The rain stayed away for most of the morning after daylight and a large group decided to visit the Coliseum and the Palatine Hill area. Hiya everyone! I've just spent a lovely day in Civitavecchia. It's about 2 hours from Rome. I laid on one of the small beaches around the harbour, & sunbathed for a n hour but soon got itchy feet & went to explore! I was on my own as my cabin mate had a bit of a heavy night drinking & was still comotosed (or however you spell it?!) so I left her sleeping! I had a bit of a wander around the streets, got eyed up by the local italian men, but not fot my beauty I think but more the sheer bravery of showing off the lily-white legs....such a shame! Day 11 Back in Rome Well the cruise has finished and when we set out we weren't sure whether we'd love it or hate it. The 11 days were enough to convince us that saving for another cruise would be well worth while. Maybe the Inside Passage in Alaska would be good. Many of the other passengers told us how they had enjoyed that. Some may say that we spent most our trip visiting old buildings etc and that's true. But they all have so much history about them and we thoroughly enjoyed the cruise and everything about it. 11 days of just perfect weather, a five-star luxury ship and visits to wonderful places. The only negatives were a few loud, rude, self-important passengers and it's not hard to figure where they were from.... read more

The first of the cruise days and after killing some time around the neighborhood near our hotel, our hire car driver made good time (Italian drivers are maniacs) to the port city of Civitavecchia. Got through the security checks etc and boarded about 2.30 pm Much to our delight we had been upgraded from an outside cabin on the 1st deck to a cabin on the 5th floor with our own verandah. Mrs Burt got into a panic when our luggage failed to arrive after about 2 hours. We went for a pre-dinner drink and when we got back there were the bags as Geoff said they would be (smart arse) Casual dress tonight for a lovely dinner, but tomorrow we put on the glad rags for the first of the 3 formal dinner nights.
