'We're here! Went to bed about 11 PM after an ungodly (probably countable if I tried to figure it out) number of hours awake or snoozing on the plane and walking around airports, standing in lines, although in Italy, lines take on a round, mobbish shape, pressing forward. We stumbled on a great restaurant last night and ate a huge salad plus polpetti (round shapped, deep fried, meatball-like bits) one set made of egg plant and zucchini, the other veal. We also treated ourselves to some red wine. Had great fun talking to the waiters and other people eating there. When we left, they gave us a little gift, two terra cotta bowls for cooking maccaroni in that say the name of the restaurant, Spaccanapoli. Last time we were in Italy, Anita and I ate at ... read more

Day Two of driving found Bill at the wheel... After an Italian breakfast at the bar/cafe (coffee and a pastry), we went back to the Bristrot where our new English/Italian friends made us eggs and toast. They helped us plan our route for the day, including a side trip to a view point a half hour past the village. We set off, thinking we knew just where to go, but it did not urn out to be true...Our first wrong turn happened in the first ten minutes. We were supposed to be looking for a sign to the "Sanctuario Maria del Pollino". We saw a sign that said just "Sanctuario" and decided to go that way....The road turned to gravel as it wound around the mountain, past cows with ringing bells and fields of wild flowers. ... read more

There is a dearth of detailed information about travelling in Calabria so I would like to share our recent two-week experience centred in Rossano. However, if you are are familiar with the basics of English grammar and syntax you’ll have to brace yourself - in order to get through this as quickly as possible I intend to ignore all the rules. This will plunge you into the spirit of driving in Italia where the rules of the road are simply a suggestion. I am not endorsing the products/businesses mentioned here but only want to share what worked for us. We are old(er) and in Italy for relaxation; if you are looking for adventure travel ideas the following will be tedious. We arrived in Rome from North America about 11 am September 25, 2015 and it took ... read more

Calabria and Puglia 2015 Notes o the BlogI have lost track of the number of times that we have been to Puglia and Calabria. The last 5 years we have been returning to familiar towns and B&Bs and trying out 1 or 2 new ones each year. If you are reading this blog with the intent of visiting these areas, I would recommend also reading my 2014 and 2013 blogs. They contain more detailed information on the places and people that we visited. The best photos are likely also in those blogs. In this year’s report I will not go into deep descriptions, location, emails, GPS, phone numbers since they all can be found in the previous blogs. Three of the last 4 years we have flown with Alitalia from Toronto to Rome. On September 27, ... read more

Taking a Ferry from Italy to Greece If it can go wrong it will Yes, just a little disorganized. Our plan was to take the Ferry from Bari Italy to Durres in Albania. But, before we made reservations we got advice from our traveler friends from Munich that the ferry line we had chosen was not too dependable. They recommended we take the “superfast” ferry from Bari to Igoumenitsa Greece. “Much better”. Hmmmmm!!! With that we reserved a “Camper Special” fare that allowed us to sleep in our camper while it crossed the Adriatic Sea. This meant we would be put on the “Open Deck”. Great, we have the cheapest way to go and we don’t have to sleep in a hot stateroom. What could possibly go wrong? 1st problem; we never received a confirmation from ... read more

We have been in Italia for just a week, driving from the Swiss border to Agrigento Sicily, about 2300 kilometers. Some days were long and a bit tiring but mostly we moseyed along the coast when we could. Our impressions are what follows. Hope you enjoy them. DRIVING: The autostradas (Italian Motorways…not FREE ways) certainly get you from one place to another faster than other roads but have no personality. Multiple lanes with lots of construction 130 kph speeds that no one follows….the minimum is generally double that….except us who drove max 120 and usually between 100 and 110. We kept the trucks company in the right hand lane. Safer? You say….Well that depends on your definition of safe. At our speed, we were Mario Andretti targets for those who see themselves as race drivers in ... read more

October 19 Our check out went smoothly and when the girl read my note she said that she would take the cat home with her that afternoon. I am choosing to believe that she will take care of all the cats, and since I'll never know, that is the story I am sticking with. We gave her a generous tip and she was thrilled. After one last stop at Caffe Roma, we were on our way. Our drive to Martina Franca was easy and the rain that was forecast waited until we were eating lunch, which was appreciated. Catherine fixed a fabulous traditional meal (traditional for a Sunday lunch, but we enjoyed it on Wednesday). We had antipasti that included sautéed olives, peppers and prosciutto-wrapped mozzarella. Next we had homemade Orecchiette pasta with tomato sauce, followed ... read more

Gelato flavour of the day - Didn't get to stop to buy one! and they closed too early in the sleepy town of Torre Melissa The view of the sun rising out of the east was as beautiful as we might have expected from our 5thfloor room and it was pleasurable to lie in bed with no pressure to get up too early as we have another straight forward drive further around the instep of Italy. The front desk man was right and the teenage girls had had their breakfast and decamped and left on their coach by the time we made the breakfast room. We were well looked after by Simona, a Romanian waitress, who couldn’t do enough for us. She chatted away, practising her English on us, giving us her history of the last ... read more

Todays gelato flavour - The actual name eludes me but it was sort of chocolate ripple with what seemed(under the street lamp at the table outside the gelateria)like puffed wheat.Anyone help me out on the name/flavour? After 41 years of married life we often do things instinctively at the same time even at 3am in the morning and this was another of those times both of waking with the 'thirsties'.And no it wasn't anything to do with the cheap wine as we had a beer each last night at dinner. We have put it down to the ingredients used in the tomato sauce base they use in their pizza and although last nights meal was one of the best we had had we still needed to slate the thirst with a large glass of water each.Perhaps ... read more
