Killarney to Carlow Just outside Killarney are the Torc Falls surrounded by beautiful mature native trees in the first National Park of Ireland. Some 11,000 acres were donated in 1932 by the last owners of Muckross House and estate. We took a tour of the house (yes another one) and heard how the house was built in 1843, has 65 rooms and took three year to build (pretty good timing- no wonder we’re importing Irish builders). Anyway the Herberts’ manged to get the nod for a visit from Queen Vic. It was six years in the planning so as you do they decided to fix the old place up a bit,(Did you know Queen Vis was frightened of fire and asked for a bedroom on the ground floor). The trouble was that several months after the ... read more

Loaded up, gassed up and headed for Killarney and the famous Ring of Kerry. Made a stop at the Drumberg Stones also known as Druids Alter. The site is over 3200 years old and it is rather amazing what was done before modern instruments. In the winter solstice the sun shines between the 2 large stones in the circle and onto the alter. Made a miscue on the trip planning and discovered that a I road can be like a farm path with grass growing up in the center. I found that out. It is 145 miles on this leg and I only took up 8 hours. Passing is not going to happen often and there are car drivers out there that like me are not comfortable on the wrong side of the road. Oh well, ... read more

A key theme of this trip to Ireland has been music, specifically Irish traditional music. We wanted to see it performed and hear as much as we could. We were keen to experience music in the places and in the situations where the Irish traditionally play this type of music. It was unlikely that we were going to be invited into homes and private gatherings all over Ireland and so, in large part, it was off to the pubs and the 'sessions' there. Sessions can be quite informal. Musicians go to pubs and take their instruments. Normally, they meet other musicians there. They have a corner, or a particular table allocated by the management, and they go about playing. These musicians might be encouraged in their endeavours with a supply of their favourite tipple provided by ... read more

Our last full day in Ireland and we are going to take another day trip via Rathmore to see if we can find the elusive graveyard where my great grandparents the Mahoney’s of Knocknagree are buried. The lack of internet connection at our stone farm cottage has been frustrating and of course any time we have wanted to do something that requires a connection we have had to drive down to Den Joes or find a tourist information centre or library. The days of the internet cafe that used to be in almost every town have gone with mobile connections via the cell phone taking over the simple tasks that most people want and that is to check emails or Facebook. Rather than look obvious parking outside Den Joes again and using their free internet we ... read more

Well, sad start of the day lol. I had shuttle bus issues (i.e. I was impatient... and I misjudged how long to wait not knowing if it was the right stop... etc etc.) So instead of the 10h45 bus, I had to wait until noon. Ended up working out well though. I met a couple from San Fran, who both happen to be teachers, so lots of discussion there. And once again the driver was great - they're just so much fun here haha everything becomes a joke. Someone had parked in the clearly marked bus loading zone... so... our bus driver parked the bus anyway and blocked the car in. Since we weren't scheduled to go for another 10 min or so, he waited until the car driver came back, said 'sorry you shouldn't be ... read more

It seems to have become colder as the summer has progressed! Saturday morning, Emily woke up just as the sun rose and headed to the city center. We waited in the freezing wind for our paddywaggon tour bus. It rained the entire three hour bus ride and thankfully cleared up just as we arrived at our destination: The Ring of Kerry! This is an 180km ring in Killarney, Ireland that overlooks the stunning ocean. On the Ring of Kerry trail, we hiked to the Torc Waterfall, the biggest waterfall in the country. After the uphill hike the cold air and most from the water felt amazing! Then, it was back to the bus where we were taken to the Killarney National Park. There were incredible views of the mountains. We got lost in the woods for ... read more

Yesterday was very low-key - off to Killarney. Waiting for the bus I had a convo with a nice old man who had such a thick Irish accent I maybe caught half of what he said. Very friendly though! The drive itself was uneventful. Very green, very grey ;) Killarney looks cute. I wandered around the town centre most of the day. A lot of little markets, so I just had to get some scones to try. Otherwise I didn't do much else - other than go see Antman... it's Marvel, I felt obligated but I really did enjoy it. Woohoo! Today I had planned to go down to Muckross House and the national park, but with a change of weather forecast I chanced it and went on a tour to Dingle. So, def on my ... read more

Monday was our last day in Scotland. David continued life as a working man, and we remaining four (Mom, Dad, Abigail, and I) traveled on to Ireland! For our last meal in Edinburgh, we ate at the Elephant House - an eclectic cafe where J. K. Rowling wrote the first Harry Potter book. As we were coming out of the cafe, I saw a girl in a cab with a very shocked look on her face and she was gesticulating excitedly. Turns out it was Tori Cohagan, one of my friends from high school and youth group. She and her family were vacationing in Scotland as well (her father, Jerry, is also a professor at Olivet). I hurriedly got out my phone and we took a selfie with Tori hanging out the taxi window right as ... read more

Geo: 52.0579, -9.50747Today we toured the Ring of Kerry which afforded quintessential Irish views of the rocky green landscape and grey coast of the North Atlantic. Our bus driver Connie fittingly accompanied our drive with a CD of Celtic music and bagpipes. Sheep and cows dotted the hillsides and everywhere we looked was green green green. Our first stop along the Ring was the beach! Even in spite of the chilly breeze we loved combing the beach for shells and pebbles in the softest shades of red and green. The students recovered crab legs and mollusks, kelp and jellyfish. Our next brief stop was a roadside overlook for a short but steep hike up a grassy hill side. While much fog clung to the mountains and hovered around the bay, we still could make out the foam ... read more

This past weekend I traveled to Killarney and toured the Ring of Kerry and Dingle Peninsula. The town of Killarney itself is a lovely town. The Ring of Kerry lived up to everything that people make it out to be. It is a beautiful landscape and will make people sit in awe at points. The big surprise of the trip was the Dingle Peninsula. It was the most beautiful place I have seen in Ireland. It is by far my favorite place and I could not begin to describe my thoughts on the peninsula. For anyone who is traveling to Ireland, I cannot recommend any place more highly. It is in my personal opinion that the Dingle Peninsula was quite a bit better than the Ring of Kerry and the Ring of Kerry left me speechless. ... read more
