Croke Park
See the pretty blue sky? Yah...that's BEFORE it started hailing. Hello everyone! Sorry I've haven't wrote on here for a bit; I've been a little preoccupied with moving in my new flat ha ha! So I'm officially moved in and I have to say I'm incredibly happy. Everything is moving along nice and smoothly and I hope this luck continues through my stay here. I start my job tomorrow (eek!) and I'm a little nervous, but they say the job's quite easy so we shall see! My weekend was really fun and I'm getting a real taste of Irish culture.
On Saturday we went to a hurling and Gaelic football match and it was super intense. They take their sports very seriously (obviously) and the stadium we went to, Croke Park, was huge. I think they said it can hold like 82,000 people?? Anyways, it definitely wasn't full for these matches, but I can't wait to go to a big game and see the entire stadium packed, it would be an experience of a lifetime. So I can't say I understood much of either game, because they're really confusing but it was fun to cheer for Dublin even though the entire stand behind us was cheering for Kilkenny. They were
getting really angry during the Gaelic football match, so needless to say we cheered a little more reservedly; I had visions of fighting fanatical Irish people and I can't say that's the type of experience I'm looking for over here ha ha!
Hurling is hilarious and is sort of like field hockey with a little bit of baseball and lacrosse thrown in. They wield these intense wooden paddles and when guys were getting slashed with these things, they went down. Hard. I think we saw more medics running across the field during playtime than the actual match. Somehow it didn't seem quite as violent as I expected though, because once the Gaelic football match started there was some serious tackling and hitting and it was pretty cool. Both teams were really great and it got down to like the last 3 minutes of the game where we were both tied and Dublin scored the final goal. It was easy to get really caught up and we were cheering like crazy; so it was a really good time. I must note however that our halftime "entertainment" was quite possibly the most stupid and ridiculous thing I've ever seen in my
life. Having said that, I think it's necessary that you promptly go on youtube.com and check these idiots out. They're this UK group called Jedward and consist of two twin brothers who look like elves and sing really horrible songs. Definitely not something I want to be subjected to again.
Well, it already feels like Dublin is home now and I'm really starting to enjoy living here. My roommates are really great and have made me feel completely at home. Once I start my job and get to travel more, I'm sure going back to Canada will be the last thing on my mind ha ha! I don't even want to think about that yet, there's still SO much for me to see and do! Anyways, I have some things to do so I love you all and I will post pictures of the apartment soon!
xoxo Sarah
