Well so it starts...well kind of. First trip was the 8hour bus journey from Cork to Donegal. We encountered some wild countryside and sharing with farm animals was not easy but I managed to survive the trip and landed home around 6pm on Monday evening. The next few days will consist of chores around the house and a few friend visits to Belfast, Letterkenny, Sligo and Mayo. I fly out on Tuesday 25th September...Check out the route by clicking on the Map above... Till then........ ... read more

It took us a while to realise that there are, in fact, no sign posts in the county of Donegal unless of course you are prepared to hack your way through 3 foot of hedge to get at them. Our third accidental detour of the day took us nearly into the Atlantic on one side with only 1 half a mile of lake to swim across to get us to Maura's wedding starting in approximately 15 minutes on the other side. Some frantic reversing, cursing and waving at fists at the gentleman in the petrol station who had sent us in the wrong direction (not to mention some swift under-carpet-brushing of the small fact that it was moi who had lef the map behind) got us to the right town with 5 minutes to spare but ... read more

The Killarney National Park was absolutely beautiful. Minutes after we posted our last entry, we headed over for a hike around the park. We saw amazing views of the Lakes & mountains & walked down to the Lower Lake to sit by the water. We were enjoying a snack while sitting on a log by the edge of the lake when a dark cloud started moving towards us & bringing some light rain with it. We bundled up into our rain jackets & hunkered down waiting for the rain to pass, but soon realized it wasn't going to stop as we got pellted by larger & larger rain drops. We had about a mile & a half walk into town with not much cover in between. By the time we made our way into a ... read more

I spent the last week and half between Galway and the Aran Islands, mostly on Inis Mor, the largest island. I had only planned on staying maybe three days, but liked it so much I stayed longer. There wasn't tons to do, but it was a nice quiet village (especially when the day-tripping tourists left) with a nice hostel. The hostel had a good kitchen and there was a market near by. I cooked a lot when it was too windy and rainy to go out...we watched DVDs in the nice common room and ate hot choloclate chip cookies. I had to cream the butter with my hands as there was no hand mixer to be found. I like beaches and islands, even if they are kind of cold and windblown. It's a pretty rough ... read more

When you think of Ireland, you picture rolling green hills, stone walls, etc. Basically what you picture is Inis Mor. I arrived on the island (the largest of the three islands that make up the Aran Islands, and also the most popular) on Thursday with three of my friends at about 11:30am. The sun was shining, it was warm (hot even) and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. It was basically perfect. After unloading our stuff at our hostel we decided it would be best to rent bikes (seeing as the island is only 9 miles by 2 miles) as opposed to taking one of the very cute (yet rather pricy) horse drawn carriages, or one of the numerous ‘tour buses’ (which cost the same as a bike). After paying our ten euros, choosing our ... read more

Hey Everyone, How's it going? Hope all is well at home. I've now been in Ireland for 2 weeks. The two nights we stayed in Dublin were a lot of fun. We left Dublin on the Firday morning to catch a bus to Bundoran. We had to catch the tram to the bus station and we couldn't find it so we asked a guy to direct us to the tram station. We thought we had found it cause the sign said Temporary Garda Station!!!! We all went in with our packs on and knocked on the window. A man with a uniform came to the window and Dana said we'd like to go to Busarus Station. He looked at us kinda wierd and said ok. I thought it was kinda wierd that he never told ... read more

Wow, its a busy week! Actually it would be if I got around to doing anything. As it is, my head is just busy, but nothing is getting done So here I am in Letterkenny, Co. Donegal - up in the north-west of Ireland. Letterkenny originated as a small fishing village and has grown to be the largest town in the north west. Strange then, that they don't have a fishmongers ... Anyway, as the tourism website for the town states, "Come and stay for a night, a weekend or a week and we know that you will be back for a longer period and more often!". Catchy slogan, eh? I really think that site could do with some work done to it, it's little wonder there's a serious lack of tourists around here, apart from ... read more

My Irish claim to fame, my great grandfather was Michael Augustus Ward (Mac an Bhaird) from Donegal. My grandmother (Ellen Ward) full blooded Irish. Michael Ward (Bhaird or 'bard') married Mary Moran, daughter of Martin Moran (married Ellen Rogers), immigrant to Genesee, Pa (Potter County) in 1840 (before the potato famine. Genesee ended up an Irish haven. Martin was one of the leading citizens. He immigrated from Mayo County. Michael Ward was very young when he immigrated from Donegal. His father, Daniel, brought his family over and settled in Olean, NY. My grandfather who married Ellen Ward was half Irish. His mother was Sara Matilda Beattie whose father, Joseph Beattie was from Newry I guess that makes me 3/8ths Ir... read more
