Sun May 17 Day 3 Veterinary Studies Abroad Woke up around the same time, 8:30am. Picked up poop, moved some dogs around. We’re leaving to go to the farm today but that’s not until after the 2pm tour. I had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for breakfast. The first tour there was a big dogfight. Ceasar got some scratched on his inner thigh but he’s a tough one so he’ll be fine. Manituk and Oidis got puncture wounds on their paw and inner leg respectively. They were babies about the hole thing (get it?). Sorry that wasn’t really funny. Anyways, I learned how to deal with doggy puncture wounds and got to see a lot of blood. After that we drove to the farm and the view is spectacular. We can see the famous volcano ... read more

Mon May 18 Day 4 Go See Mad Max It’s only day 4? No way. Lets see…. Woke up and did the usual poop and hose down the cage drill. I’m getting a lot better at learning the dog’s names. We have this tiny little box that has two beds in it and nothing else. When we stay on the glacier, two people are going to have to sleep in it because it’ll be close to the dogs and if there is a fight or a dog gets loose, there will be people close by. The base camp is a lot further from the dogs so that’s why it’s necessary. I haven’t seen the place but this is what I’ve been told. Tomorrow we leave at 5am to go back to Skalafell. That’s the place that ... read more

Oli poutapäivä. Tuuli edelleen kovasti. Suuntasimme pohjoiseen.

Ajoimme ensin Reykjavikiin, lisäsimme renkaisiin ilmaa, koska autossa paloi varoitusvalo. Jorma luki karttaa. Ajoimme Reykjavikin keskustaan, pysäköimme auton kirkon viereen. Kävimme kävelyllä vanhassa kaupungissa. Siellä oli paikalliset vanhojen päivät. Poikkesimme pullakahvilla. Ajoimme Selfossiin. Pysähdyimme näköalapaikalle, kun saavuimme ylängöltä laaksoon. Tuuli oli kova. Selfossissa kävimme pankissa ja syömässä. Toisessa paikassa oli wifi, ja tutkimme majoituksia. Päädyimme majataloon, joka sija... read more

On devait terminer ... read more

Day 3 in Iceland When we woke, the sky was partly blue - a great sign, but it could also mean anything. Just before we left the lovely lady who managed the camping park warned us that the wind was going to be a real problem and she stressed to us to drive very carefully. There were going to be 70 kph winds plus gusts. We found this to be so as soon as we left. Tome drove and sometimes into a head wind (which really tested Mollie and the fuel consumption went way up). The sideway gusts of winds, especially when we were driving along the shore, really moved the motor home. It was a little worrying despite all this, all went well. We drove a short distance west and visited the Skógar folk museum. ... read more

Our trip to Iceland didn’t start very auspiciously, with our flight being delayed for 2 hours because of French air traffic control strikes! We wriggled and fidgeted and worried until they finally told us we were going, but we were pretty lucky that they hadn’t cancelled our flight like a lot of others. In our spare time we did manage to buy a bottle of duty free gin as we had heard alcohol was very expensive in Iceland, so the time wasn’t totally wasted. And before we knew it, we were touching down in Reykjavik. The sun was shining and it wasn’t unbearably cold, we couldn’t believe it! We’d been told that Icelandic people had been voted the friendliest in the world, and before long that was readily apparent. Some excitable and possibly slightly drunk locals ... read more

Today was our last in this beautiful city of Reykjavik. We were up and eating breakfast by 7:30. The Guesthouse is run by Etta and her husband, the communist. Etta was our guide for the Golden Circle and she makes a-killer rhubarb crisp. Today was the arctic rafting trip. We had a 90 minute drive to the outfitter for our frigid excursion. We slept most of the way and learned just how cold this was going to be. They gave us wet suits (pre wet for us), booties, nasty fleece jackets and a water-proof jacket to cover everything. Watching everyone cram into the wetsuits was quite humorous. We got our helmets and paddles and we were off with our guide from Nepal, Lama. Fortunately as happened on our snowmobile tour, we were the only ones on ... read more

When in Rome do as the Romans do, when in Iceland try and absorb the immense natural beauty of the diverse landscape. There is truly so much to take in and a week just is not enough to cover it all. What we covered was: · Blue Lagoon: This is a wonderful place to visit and to just relax. It’s an outdoor spa about 35 minutes away from Reykjavik. The natural warm waters in Blue Lagoon are a refreshing contrast to the cool outside air. The water has natural healing abilities and you can also use some of the free silica mud for your face and skin. They also offer a swim up bar in the facilities and the restaurant and café offer excellent food. · Thingvellir (Althing) National Park: Visiting this ... read more

Continuing on our two day bus tour of the south of Iceland. We transfer to a monster truck/4wd bus that can take us off road. Iceland has a lot of seriously off road regions. First stop is a volcano called Eyjafjallajökull. Roughly pronounced Ai-a-fyatla-yoketl. Perhaps you have heard of it? We stopped at the farm that sits literally underneath the crater. They were almost wiped out when it happened with huge damage to their plant and equipment. But they have recovered and now make a nice living from their beautiful, government-subsidised dairy farm, and an even better living from the volcano museum/gift shop they have set up. Again, really well done as all of these things appear to be in Iceland. A 20-minute documentary made about their family and farm during the eruption, and the changes ... read more
