Dear All This blog entry sends greetings from Iceland! When I arrived in this amazing country, I couldn't quite believe I was there. It is one of those mythical places you often read or hear about, but never imagine being able to visit. I felt the same about Japan, the Galapagos Islands, and now this remarkable island! I had it very much confirmed during my first few days, even hours there, that it is indeed a stunning and beautiful place. I loved my first few days there, and was so excited to explore more! In my last blog entry, I was drying off in my very cosy Air BnB in Hoyvík, back in the Faroe Islands, with the central heating on full blast drying off everything I was wearing and carrying on that soggy day. I ... read more

On our way to our hotel last night we stopped for fuel and our driver, Omar told us to go out by the house in the back. There we were buzzed hundred of birds who were protecting their nests. It looked like something out of Alfred Hitchcock movie, The Birds. Arriving at our hotel for the night we spotted a nearby church and a few of us went to explore. It was a Earthen structure covered by soil and grass. I read that when wood has hard to come by they started using this method for some homes. They are very energy efficient. Renee and her new friend Zack decided to climb to the top of the mountain behind the hotel, you can see the top of it behind the church in one of the pictures. ... read more

Blog 2 Glaciers and Icebergs After another great breakfast we left the Icelandic Hotel Klauster and did a short drive to the Fjaorarglgufur Canyon. Weather was cool and gently showering. We drove for about 6 km along a dirt road. Arriving at the parking spot we then had to walk for about 2kms across a field to the canyon. The walk was well worth the effort. Fjaðrárgljúfur is a magnificent and massive canyon, about 100 meters deep and about two kilometres long. The canyon has sheer walls that twist and turn and are really narrow in some places. The viewing spots are excellent and we found it easy to get some great photo. It would have been a great experience to walk along the canyon floor but given there had been a lot of rain it ... read more

Our trip around Iceland is following the A1 ring road which circles the country. There are some quirks including a large number of single lane bridges. Unusual to see as part of a highway. They have been built across areas where there is potential flood risk following volcanic eruptions. Interestingly over time some bridges are now in the wrong place because the rock debris which also falls as part of the eruption diverts the water elsewhere. An ongoing issue. Iceland has no predatory animals except for the arctic fox. They do have reindeer and min, which were introduced and are now considered feral. hunting permits are issued for certain times of the year. Sheep roam free in the mountains during the summer drinking the pure water and grazing on the grass. They are rounded up and ... read more
