In the 800's Viking settlers headed for Iceland, stopping off in Britain to collect Celtic wives, but brought their horses with them. Since then, the Viking horses have maintained pure bloodlines, not crossed with any other breeds. The Iceland horses are small, 13 to 14 hh and fine built in an amazing range of beautiful colours. They were used as transport and for work until the 1920's and now are used for tourism. There are lots of horse breeders in Iceland, with properties of up to 600 hectares on which they can run herds of more than 50 horses. Horses can be tamed or untamed and broken or unbroken when they are sold. There is a central stallion stable to improve the quality of the bloodlines, with more than 60 horses that breeders can hold shares ... read more

This morning brought a hardy meal of bacon, blood sausage (Mike) and waffles. The boys attempted again to play with their soccer ball outside. Alas the small corgi like dog came running up to try to steal it again. Soccer game postponed. After exploring the local Netto for groceries prior to National Day closings. National Day is like American Independence Day in that it is celebrated around the occasion of Iceland achieving independent rule from Denmark. However the events differ. In Reykjavik there are larger and longer events with parades and food, etc. However local towns do things on a smaller scale. We are currently in Egilsstadir. In this town they have a church service, a small parade, bouncy houses, a stage with singers and dancers, and a couple of sporting events like &@!&. Most of the ... read more

Today started with making waffles by reading the box in Icelandic. After giving up when trying to look up the Icelandic word for egg, Judith just started pouring milk into the batter until it looked right. We purchased waffle mix yesterday when we saw the house we were renting had a waffle maker. Syrup was another story as we couldn't figure out syrup on the grocery shelf so mom picked out strawberry syrupy jam in a milk type container. It was a hit. Too bad we can't bring it back with us. Time to make syrupy jam at home!! We are staying on a horse farm just outside Egilsstadir on 94. Thus we only had to take one left turn to make our way to Borgarjprdur. 70 km, long dirt road, a few paved areas, a ... read more

I sit here facing the back window at the end of a LONG day watching the horses graze and the river flow by. The wind has a kick to it as it whips around the farm and through our small window openings. Birds chirp and life is good. Today brought an early start as we had a long journey to get from the south to the east. Plus, we had LOTS to see along with way. After packing the car we started down the side road to 204. Along the way we stopped to look at the baby terns on the side of the road. And once again got the adult terns upset. They pecked the hood again but not us. In town we laughed over our confusion and inexperience at obtaining gas for the car. ... read more

Sunday, 20 September 2015 Akureyri to Egilsstaðir, Iceland On our way out of Akureyri, the first thing on the agenda was stop by a gas station for a hot dog (and fuel). We got hot-dogs that were topped with french fries, cheese and an amazing sauce! After stuffing our faces, we started heading towards our next destination, Egilsstaðir. Midway, we partially passed through what is known as the Diamond Circle. The Diamond Circle is Iceland's second most popular "circle" tour after the Golden Circle. Many tourists fly in to Akureyri and make the tour from there. The circle partially overlaps the Ring Road and extends north to Húsavík and back down eastward to the Ring Road again. We didn't have time to make it to all the destinations on the circle and missed out on the ... read more

A ... read more

Wednesday 29th July The eastern coast of Iceland is noticeable for the many fjords, and smaller bays, running roughly east-west. It is a popular hiking and horse riding area for Icelanders themselves as well as tourists. Many walking routes have been published and are clearly marked on local maps, and the area is well supplied with mountain huts in which to spend the night. The area we would be trekking in has no tarmac roads, and few gravel roads, but there are a number of dirt roads which tend to be much steeper and often cross rivers. Oskar had arranged for our minibus to be collected and substituted with an off-road jeep driven by his son. After breakfast at the Alfheimar we again made our packed lunch for the day, packed a day sack for ourselves, ... read more

Tuesday 28th July We are staying for two nights here at the Hotel Alfheimar in Bakkagerdi, to allow us to have an acclimatisation day before setting off on our trek tomorrow. As we were driving north from Egilsstadir yesterday afternoon there was a range of prominent peaks on our right. They are had snow-capped summits but their summits were also in the clouds most of the time. Depending on the weather, today's walk may have attempted to go to the summit of one of those peaks, but this morning it seemed clear that the summits were going to stay in the clouds for most of the day so instead we did a circular walk going partially up to the summit ridge. We had breakfast in the hotel at 8am and then made ourselves a packed lunch ... read more

Day 7 - Iceland It was a beautiful morning, almost a completely clear blue sky. We got away by 8.45am with our usual 'to-go' coffee in our individual coffee containers that Kerrie & Gemma gave us (c/o Tea). We drove north along Tjörnes peninsula with its beautiful coastline. We saw the Puffin (Lundey) Island where we were yesterday. We stopped at a number of viewing points along the way. We then drove through Húsavík fishing village and admired the picturesque harbour again. We loved the little town. Then we continued to the horse-shoe-shaped gorge Ásbyrgi. After visiting the Visitors Centre, we took a short walk through a small but lovely forest to Botnstjorn pond. The striking feature here was the massive canyon walls. We were about to drive through Jökulsárgljúfur gorge, which is a national park. ... read more

Iceland and Faeroe Islands - 1 July to 4 July 2014 We sailed away at about 11.45am from Hirtshals. The sun was shining but there was a gale-force wind up on the top deck at the front of the ship. There were 8 deck levels and we were on the 7th level. The ship carried 800 vehicles and capacity of 1482 people. It's not like the previous cruises we have been on as it is a pay-as-you-go or you pre pay for your meals - which we chose to do for lunch and dinner. There were a couple of bars on board as well as a large lounge/cafe. There were 4 or 5 choices for meals but you had to choose these before you board the ship if you wanted to pre pay. Fortunately we chose ... read more
