a fisherman's tale
taken on one of the islands around santorini I arrived in Santorini a few days ago after a long, but relaxing boat trip from Pireaus, Athens. The reason it had been so relaxing was the fact that I had to buy a business class ticket of 52euro, since everything else was sold out. The first time I follow an advise in the Lonely Planet Guide and it screws up. I literally hate those guide books by now. I have found countless mistakes in all the once I've used. Mostly I double check, but this time I followed the advise of not buying my boat-ticket before it was sure to departure and found that only these exstremely exoensive tickets were left. But as I said it was nice, though not worth 52euros it was surtently possible to get a lot more sleep than outside "the lounge" as they called it.
I arrived to Santorini and got lucky to get picked up by my youth hostel.
The youth hostel I will give a little space in my blog, though not for the better. The toilets are dreadful. Since it is not allowed to put toiletpaper in the toilets, but instead in the "provided" bin it gets really smelly and then you
should expect, considering the fact that 30 people share four toilets, that they would change those bins once in a while, but no... Only once a day, so lucky the one who gets in just after the cleaning lady. And worse are the showers, firstly which comes with the fact of visiting an island, the water smells of roten egg. I can survive, I mean it should even be healthy. But the bad part comes when you get in one meter of the shower curtains. They were once I believe in many different colors, which you can make out from thetop corners, but the rest of the curtain has turned black of dirt. You can't even straighten it out. The walls as well are nasty dark looking and the beds are smelling terrible from the last 30 years of use. No wonder that most people sleep very few hours a night, who wants to. Well anyhow it's okay I guess. The staff is nice and the atmosphere relaxed. Unfortunatly I just came in the American season, which means that 95% are from the States. They are nice and we can have a laugh, but too many. And it gets to
the vulcano
vulcano of santorini with island in the background American for me. Yesterday they even run a bet of writting down all the states in five minutes. I miss more Europeans around me to talk with. I feel I have so much more in common with my fellow Europeans to talk about, even though our cultures are different, we still share a lot.
So mainly what we do is drinking on the front terasse and enjoying some drinking games and later going for a cocktail (pina colada for me, please) at the Beach Bar.
This is a little about the hostel and the people here. I'll return with a bit about Santorini and what I've been up too!
