Imerovigli, Santorini, Greece Trust me, the view’s not half bad, though I failed to take a decent picture of it. In my defence the caldera, from my viewpoint 1000 feet up, was too awesome to be truly ‘captured’. I had the same problem with the Grand Canyon. Neither I nor my camera were up to the task. In fact, in one sense, the manageress of Anastasis Apartments has one of the easiest jobs in the world. Every time a new guest arrives she checks them in and leads them to the rear of the hotel which is on the cliff top and, with a gentle wave of her hand, indicates the horizon. It’s stunning. I witnessed the performance several times. The manageress stands quietly by while the guests take the sight in. Some people gasp an ... read more

Issy's still feeling lousy so breakfast is short lived. She says that I should go on the sailing cruise that we've booked by myself and she'll stay in bed. I reluctantly agree. We're driven along the narrow road around the rim of the caldera to the village of Oia. I remember Kostas telling us that the drivers here all constantly play Tetris with their mirrors, and all the vehicles along the way slow down as we pass them so that the mirrors only shave each other rather than being sheared off. The road from Oia down to its port on Ammoudi Bay takes steepness, windiness and narrowness to new levels. The Bay's lined with restaurants and the scene is stunning. The town is about 300 metres straight above us on the cliff top, and I'm not ... read more

Santorini was incredible it was such a beautiful island, what we liked was that it had so much more to it than the other two islands we had visited. It is a huge volcanic island that erupted thousands of years ago and was supposedly one of the largest eruptions the world has ever seen (we debated this as we think that Taupo might take that one out). It is thought that this was the eruption that sunk Atlantis and that Akrotiri (the red beach) is the site of Atlantis They are currently excavating a huge site which is due to open in September (the guide told us however that it was supposed to open in September three years ago). Where we stayed in Imerovigli was at one of the highest points on the caldera and it ... read more

Thompson Tours set off early this morning. Mike and Jan have been wonderful and today they were taking us on a driving tour to see parts of the island. We drove down to the New Port - Athinos and on to Akrotiri. We then drove on to the Marina at Vlyhada. We did a little shopping at the supermarket at Mesaria. We drove on to Thira and booked our sailing trip and spent 2hrs wandering around and visiting the Carra Bar. We then returned to the Santorini Princess for a swim in the pool and, in the evening, we took the bus down to Amoudi where we had a 4hour meal at Katinas - overlooking the water and watching the sun go down. The Santorini Princess is a beautiful Hotel in a 'magic' location.... read more
