It was an early start as the alarm went off at 0500hrs. We got ready in an hour's time and left the beautiful house of Ada as the dawn broke over the eastern skies. We had a 3 hour's drive from Githio to Athens airport. It was more or less the same route we took while coming to Githio. After a brief halt just before the airport to fuel up the car and the passengers, we were off to the most visited island in the world - Santorini. Santorini is a crescent shaped island, reformed after a 3000 year old volcano eruption giving it it's distinctive features namely the steep Cliff side called caldera, multicolored soils and rocks, different colored beaches, islands and it's rugged exterior. Also against popular belief back home, Santorini is a big ... read more

Day 17 - Sat. Oct. 8 - Port of call: Volos, Greece. Weather: Sunny with temperatures of 75°F/24°C Today’s port is Volos, built near the site of ancient Iolcos, at the foot of Mount Pelion. The city overlooks the Gulf of Pagasae and is in the region known as Magnesia, which has been featured in some of the most remarkable mythological tales of ancient Greece. The reported founder of the area was Magnes, son of Zeus and Aeolus. The area was the birthplace of the Centaurs, those beings who were part horse and part human. Finally this location was where the famous Argonaut expedition set sail. Our morning excursion first took us to the Volos Archaeological Museum, which features Neolithic artifacts from all over Thessaly, as well as excavations throughout Magnesia and Karditsa. It also features ... read more

Europe » Greece » Ionian Islands » Corfu October 1st 2016

The ship has overnighted in Corfu. It's a bit tough getting up, as we have an early tour and we have lost one hour in a time change overnight. The weather continues to be perfect. Our tour guide is a delightful, bubbly personality named Alexandria, who almost instantly becomes our best friend. Our bus heads out of the city of Corfu, headed for the more rugged northern part of the island. It takes about 45 minutes to reach Paleokastrista, an area known for its natural beauty. We have been steadily climbing and the roads are becoming more or more narrow. Our driver is a wizard who somehow is able to negotiate hairpin turns and various obstacles in our large touring coach. Our first stop is the Monastery of the Virgin Mary, founded in 1226. It is ... read more

Corfu is one of those beautiful and popular holiday destinations that'd you'd take your partner or family to for a well-planned summer vacation - you know, when you have a job, have money and are well-organised. Well, I should've thought of that before deciding to go there. First of all, it is August and peak season, so finding anywhere to stay on the island was a challenge let alone finding somewhere cheap and available relatively last-minute. I was lucky to get something a week in advance for 25€ a night on Airbnb. As this was my first Airbnb reservation, I did honestly have my suspicions about it. The host had no reviews at all despite having an account on the website for two years and was the only person of the five I wrote to who ... read more

After everyone had such lovely experiences with the drag-on, drag-off tours yesterday, Mark and I decided to skip Corfu Panorama and just do our own thing. To be fair, the Watkins did the Corfu Panorama tour and said it was quite lovely. But we still did our own thing. With Mom. Which meant we shopped Corfu! This also means my husband is a saint. Mom had called before we even went to get breakfast and asked what we were doing. We told her we were striking out on our own and she asked if she could join us. Of course! Mark was getting a little work done (the Wi-Fi was actually semi-cooperative which is about the best that can be expected) and we didn’t leave the cabin for breakfast until a little after 10. Guess what? ... read more

Zakynthos—aka We Won Today was our first stop in Greece, on the tiny island of Zakynthos or Zante. The ship did not dock until noon so we had a leisurely morning. I woke up early (5:40 a.m.) and could not sleep so decided to try and get the blog and pictures uploaded. It was fairly successful. It took 2 hours to upload 28 pictures to Facebook. Like I have said before, Wi-Fi on this ship is horrid. Mark got up around 8 and went to get breakfast. He saw Skate in the restaurant and had a nice conversation with her. I updated and uploaded the blogs and re-uploaded pictures that failed to upload the first time. Sympathize with me here, people, I’m having REAL first-world problems! During the whole cruise planning process, Julie and I had ... read more

Moest wel even mijn zonnebril afzetten.

"I am once more amongst the merry Greeks, who are worth all other nations put together...All their bad habits are Venetian; their wit, their eloquence, their good nature, are their own." Sir Charles Napier 1825 (Of the seventeen British governors who ruled Kefalonia, only Sir Charles Napier is was looked upon favorably. His great affection for the island is obvious from the name of his daughter, Emily Kefalonia.) Our next two stops in Greece were much shorter, unfortunately. We had only about four hours each day in Santorini (Thera) and in Kefalonia the following day. "The devastating volcanic eruption of Thera has become the most famous single event in the Aegean before the fall of Troy. It may have been one of the largest volcanic eruptions on Earth in the last few thousand years. The violent ... read more

It has been quite a while since I have written a blog for us, we have spent the last couple of years in Greece, and learnt to love this very varied country. We have been lucky enough to have some good friends here, and have enjoyed some very relaxing times. All of our trips have been interesting and mostly really fun, but last september we had a very bad trip to Crete. The weather was very hot, 42 Deg but the winds were very favourable when we set off from Preveza, we headed to Zante first, I had not been there before, and we anchored int he middle of the big harbour. It was so very hot, we took the dog ashore and had an ice-cream. We had spent the previous evening in Kastos, one of ... read more
