Background: Greece achieved its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1829. During the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, it gradually added neighboring islands and territories, most with Greek-speaking populations. In World War II, Greece was first invaded by Italy (1940) and subsequently occupied by Germany (1941-44); fighting endured in a protracted civil war between royalist supporters of the king and communist rebels. Following the latter's defeat in 1949, Greece was able to join NATO in 1952. A military dictatorship, which in 1967 suspended many political liberties and forced the king to flee the country, lasted seven years. The 1974 democratic elections and a referendum created a parliamentary republic and abolished the monarchy. Greece joined the European Community or EC in 1981 (which became the EU in 1992); it became the 12th member of the euro zone in 2001.

A day in Athens

 Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens
Rightio. So we got into Athens at around 6am, got to the backpackers at 7... 7:30. We couldn't check in (as much as we wanted to) till 1:00 so we dropped our bags and started walking. We saw the Acropolis from outside the fence, it's pretty impressive. By the time we got passed it we were exhausted, the flight had taken it out of us and it was STINKING hot. It was now 8am and we were over it. We kept walking and eventually found ourselves in a little lane way filled with cafe's and covered in grape vines. Shade. We [View Full Entry]

A More Restful Day

 Europe » Greece » Attica
Today I stayed at the house while my mom and step-dad went to the beach. During the evening we went to Syntagma and climbed up the streets of the plaka to see the Acropolis lit up at night. We ate Ice Cream with sparklers at a cafe facing the acropolis and then caught the last train back to Kifisia. [View Full Entry]

Rome and Greece

 Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens
During the day I visited the Temple of Olympian Zeus & Arch of Hadrian with my mom and aunt. The Arch of Hadrian was an interesting Roman artifacts within Greece, especially since Hadrian erected it upon completion of the Temple of Olympian Zeus and used it as a divider between Ancient Greece (the Greece of Theseus) and Roman Greece (The Athens of Hadrian, not of Theseus). Below the sight of the Temple of Zeus was another set of ruins that weren't advertised anywhere, including a temple to Chronus and Rhea, several temples to Apollo, and a Tannery. At night(Starting at 23:59) [View Full Entry]

Day 28- Saturday It was hard to imagine yesterday at lunch on Koh Samui that by this morning at 6.30am we would be on another continent (and that our baggage checked in there would also have arrived safely too). All went well except for the 5 hour wait till midnight in Bangkok airport, which is even less interesting than Sydney airport ....not even internet for those with long transits. However, the flight was great. Only half full so everyone who wanted got three seats to sleep on. In any case Thai seem to use airbus, not jumbos and there is much [View Full Entry]

Day One Adventures

 Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens
Today was jam packed with action. We got up early and headed to the Acropolis by way of the Metro. We arrived about half an hour after the Acropolis opened so it was pretty empty when we got there which was nice. It costs €12 to get in to the Acropolis but that same ticket also gets you into 6 other archeological sites including the Ancient Agora, Kerimekios, Theatre of Dionysus, Roman Agora, Hadrian's Library and the Temple of Olympian Zeus. Also because I am under 19 my ticket was free. We enter the site at the Theater of Dionysus, which [View Full Entry]

Ancient Athens

 Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens
Tuesday 8 - Friday 11 June 2008 We’re over a month behind with the blogs (our trip is just flying) so I’m making the next couple pretty short to try and catch up. So here’s a run down of the things I remember most about our two days in Athens: Heat. It was hot, damn hot. The temp was high thirties, but unlike the Islands, there was no breeze to cool us down. Also, since we only had two days, we went against all advice and roamed around in the middle of the day. Food. I found the yummest and cheapest [View Full Entry]

Welcome to Greece

 Europe » Greece » Attica
27 hours latter, that is 17 hours of travel and a 10 hour time change, we have arrived in Greece. We are staying in Kiffisia which is a suburb of Athens. The city center is at the end of the main train line which is really convenient but the house we are staying in is a 20 minute walk from the station. [View Full Entry]

(once again, I'm not in the writing mood, so here's a quick recap) So today Dave left to go to Paris. I’m sure he’s going to LOVE that city, I know I sure did. In the morning, he went souvenir shopping while I caught up on a little more sleep. Then I walked him to the train station and said goodbye. Back to the solo traveler. Although I love traveling alone, it was pretty damn cool to have some friends to share the experience with. I went back to the hostel to check emails, read up on the latest hockey news, [View Full Entry]
