Today was tough. Long flight with little sleep although I did have the whole row of seats to myself which I made into a mini bed thing. Still I couldn't sleep well. Once I arrived in Dusseldorf the brother of my exchange sister Marten met me in the lobby. Immediately my german was put the test. I didn't do so bad but I know it could be better but my mind was little frazzled at that point. So then we wait for my exchange sister (Svea) to come pick us both up and she began to speak to me in english which for me was a glass of water in the desert. It felt good to be able to speak with ease again. But I made the tough decision to implore them that I wanted to ... read more

Hello again! I am finally getting caught up! I figured I better get on top of things before I head to Kassel because I know there will be so much to say about seeing Karl and Ilse! First though, is life with Anna! I stayed with her and her Dad and I got really lucky that I got to catch her right before she left to go back to Freiburg for school. She goes to medical school there, she actually used to go to school in Hungary (and took classes in Hungarian) but transferred back to Germany just a couple years ago. When I got to her house and she brought me to her room I was greeted by the pillow I made for her when she arrived in the US. I used to be so ... read more

Dusseldorf I was in Dusseldorf at the beginning of the year for a typically cheesy European celebration. Yes, that of Eurovision. I didn't, however, see much of what the town has to offer, so it was a pleasant feeling to be back there once again several months later. The first time I was here, I saw a lot of the train station, the football ground, and many ecstatic Eurovision fans. That's the best thing about Eurovision in my eyes... it's a chance for Europe to get together, and be silly together, and to make fun of ourselves and others. It's a shame that both times I visited there were major building works going on. It can really wreck the atmosphere of a beautiful city. But without allowing this to affect my visit I wandered on down ... read more

***www.thetattooedtraveler.com*** So, your first question may be: Why go to Düsseldorf? And that may be followed with: Why in February? The answer, my friends, is simple: Money. I have a friend who lives there, so I had a free place to stay and airfare is cheaper in February because who in their right mind would vacation in Germany in the middle of winter? All that being said, Düsseldorf was hopping! It was Carnival, which precedes Ash Wednesday and the Lenten season, so it was just one big party! The city of Cologne, 30 minutes away and Düsseldorf’s big rival, also does Carnival— it’s a point of contention as to who does it better. Since I didn’t visit Cologne, I have no basis to judge, but I can say that Düsseldorf gets pretty crazy with the costumes ... read more

The weather here in Europe has been amazing. Every country and city I go to the locals keep talking about how lucky I am for getting such good weather while I am here. I guess it can still get crappy and cold during this time which is normal anywhere. Today was an especially nice day very hot but enought that I can handle it. I set out this morning to hunt down the chocolate muesum. It was not that far of a walk, I just need to cross this huge bridge and wala I was there. The muesum was kind of neat, they take you through the whole process from how the get to cocoa nuts out of the trees all the way to how they ship it. The next room was the Lindt room where ... read more

Heralding in my 30th year on this planet, Adam and I headed to Dusseldorf for a celebratory weekend. I have to say I was nervous about travelling. The night before our flight, we'd not booked any accommodation as neither of us was wholly committed to setting foot on the plane the following day. Thoughts of being stranded in Germany were completely clouding my vision. But alas the next day we 'sucked it up' and set off. We needn't have been worried. The travels that followed were as hassle free and as seamless as any we've ever experienced to date. The flight was perfect-perfect departure, perfect arrival, perfect transport connection to the city centre. It was so easy it was almost unnerving. We kept looking at each other waiting for something to go wrong. Instead, we found ... read more
