Christmas Market Day 4.... & coming home It’s St Nickolas Day...... It was the night before St Nickolas day and all through the Zimmer, not a creature was stirring, not even Kisty. You get my point.... I wake up to a squeal from Lori’s room, I’m thinking, someone has come in and got her, so I immediately lock my door. Sorry Lori, Yes, I finally came out and everyone is safe. St Nickolas came last night; gifts were hanging from our doors and our breakfast area was totally set with an AWESOME German breakfast. We all sit down to breakfast asking each other did you do it? No, I didn’t, did you? It was a wonderful breakfast. YEAH! I Believe, I Believe...... However, today is also a sad day, all things must come to an end. ... read more

I wake up, all the lights in the cabin are on and it’s noisy, I look over and Kirsten is smiling at me. Wake up sleepy head ...we’re going to be landing is 1 hr. I’m served breakfast and it was good, but more coffee would have made it better along with another 2 hours of sleep. We land. Kirsten, OMI and I are out the door and on our way through customs. It’s always easy when you’re at the front of the line. We make our way through the airport and find the Alamo car rental counter. How boring, until the agent behind the counter looks at Kirsten and points out that her drivers’ licenses will expire on July 27th, 2019 and she can’t rent the car. OK, so Kirsten asks her to put me ... read more

The journey home begins – Saturday July 28, 2018 We wake up to Leonarda calling for his morning breakfast, Kirsten is out the door with bread in hand. It’s like a baby calling for her momma. I call out, see what you’ve created, Kirsten smiles yea, I wish I could take her home with us. That wakes me up, not even no but...... #$&% NO! While were eating breakfast, Kirsten goes over our assigned choirs. It seems to me my list grew from last night assignments. We’ve all finished our choirs are bags are packed and in the car. Yes, the time has come we’re sad, but all GREAT vacations must come to an end. We’ve cleaned the house, changed the sheets, vacuumed the floors, cleaned anything and everything. The owners will be home tonight, and ... read more

I wake up after an OK night’s sleep, well as good as it can be flying 30 thousand feet over the pond. That’s Kentuckian for large body of water. We land and make it through customs, well Kirsten and Omi are, I truly think they like messing with me. I get the 3rddegree and by the time I make through Kirsten and Omi are discussing leaving me. Kirsten gives me the WHAT THE look and I just shrug and shake my head. We wind our way through the airport and pick up the car. Kirsten goes to the garage and gets the car; Omi and I decide to wait in the pick-up zone with the luggage. In less than 5 minutes, Kirsten comes up to a screeching stop in front of Omi and says .... Uber? ... read more

It’s six AM, I rollover and hear Bea busily getting ready for work. So, at this time I would like to give a special THANK YOU BEA!!!! If it wasn’t for you Bea we wouldn’t have had such a great Christmas Market vacation. Kirsten and I see Bea and Omi along with the rest of the Delta crew off. All of a sudden Kirsten and I are alone. WOO HOO, we grab our bags and off we go. We are to catch a flight out of Dusseldorf tomorrow morning at 11:35 AM. It’s now Friday around 8:30 am. What to do!!!!!! The greatest benefit to being Indian is all the family I have everywhere. Yes we got on the flight We’re in 5b & 5c, no body in front of us nor behind us Our flight attendant asks would you like some Champagne ma’am? Kirsten smiles and says….. oh Yes please. We get our menu and Kirsten selected the beef tenderloin and I selected the Mediterranean chicken dinner. Kirsten loved hers and mine was fantastic. Oh yeah, the Rioja wine was good as well. I watched the movie Hail Caesar; it was ok but glad I didn’t pay to go and see it. About half way through the movie our attendant offered me some port wine. I couldn’t be rude and refuse so I had a few glasses. As the movie is finishing and I finish the last of my port, my eyes are getting heavy and I’m thinking I ... read more

Dusseldorf Germany 23 September 2014 After arriving in Dusseldorf at about 6.00pm at a camp site that was on the banks of Lake Unterbacher. Before dinner, we went for a walk along the banks of the lake. We noted there were a lot of permanent caravans in the camp grounds, many of whom had developed their little front gardens with flowers, Bar-B-Qs, deck chairs etc. In the evening, we saw several fairy-light trees lit up. The next morning we drove into Dusseldorf and found a park about 5 tram-stops from the Old Town. We met 2 couples from New York, one of whom guided us on which stop to get off. This couple were actually living in Dusseldorf as he was a German. The 2 couples had been neighbours 42 years ago in New York and ... read more

For most people, a long stopover at an airport en route to your final destination elicits a long groan, followed by a grudgingly accepting sigh. I however, see stopovers as opportunities, and my brief adventures in Singapore, Segovia, and Seoul, show that one can make the most of a stopover by filling it with exploration and experience. This time I had the best part of five hours to kill in Düsseldorf en route to Berlin, and about three hours on the way back from Berlin to London. While my other stopovers were well-planned in advance, I actually hadn't even entertained the thought of doing anything this time around. I knew that I had a long-ish connection but had kind of forgotten all about it until I was on... read more

If you’re after an action-packed blog entry then may I suggest you move on now. There’ll be nothing on offer other than of the mundane variety – no news to report other than I’m in another hemisphere. The weather seems to have chased me down from south to north – it’s cold and wet. And Duesseldorf is as I left it two years ago – a big construction site. Flight went as well as any long distance flight can be expected to. Although it was nice not to have drama of checking in a bicycle and all the accompanying palava. And super nice to have had a lift to the airport – thanks to those involved that made it happen especially on such a cold and wet evening. Not sure if it’s a symptom of getting ... read more
