Munchen Land!! Sorry its taken so long for me to update, I am SO busy this week with finals, trip planning and the like. Munich was a really fun city, I could definitely spend more time there. We got into Munich after an 8 hour train and had our free drink at the Wom bar (our hostel) and then I went to sleep earlyish to get up in the morning. In the morning we took the train to Dachau, a concentration camp that was only 30 minutes outside munich. We got there super early in the morning and basically had the entire place to ourselves to just walk around and take it all in. I didn’t think it would be as moving as it was.. I mean we all learn about the holocaust and we know what happened but it was so different and real to be there. It was so crazy that it was so recent and so close to Munich! Hard to believe that they didn’t have any idea of what was going on. It was really really moving, we all just kind of separated and walked around by ourselves. I found myself like getting emotional walking
around, I definitely was surprised. It was especially weird to be their as tourists, I'm sure that they never would dream that people would come back and visit a place that represented such hate and horribleness. On this trip I have really experienced that qualities of kindness are universal and present everywhere, it is so mind blowing that any group of people could do such disgusting things. I'm having a really hard time putting it all into words how it felt to be standing in the middle of it all.
We left and headed back to Munich. We all felt pretty drained but we had to keep on so we went walking around and seeing some sites. Munich is a really cool city, apparently there was a soccer game or something that day because people were decked out and singing songs.. reminded me of going to a Tech football game but like on a much bigger scale. So we wandered over to Hoftgarden to indulge in our first (of many) german beers. We sat outside and enjoyed our beers and then we continued walking around. Had a bratwurst, decided it was time for another beer and sat down at
another beer garden, again outside because we wanted to people watch. This one was cool because there were blankets laid out for us to use and it was overlooking St. Peter’s Cathedral so it was really nice and not too cold to enjoy our beers at all.
We all met up at the hostel and went to dinner for Raleigh’s bday which was fun because its always an adventure when you are ordering german food. Sometimes its delicious, I’ve found that anything with noodles or mushrooms is usally good, I ordered this like sampler plate that had mushroom ravioli and meatballs and something else that I wasn’t really sure but it tasted good. Natalie for some ungodly reason ordered pork knuckle, which looked about as delicious as it sounds. We enjoyed another german beer over dinner, and I sweet talked the waiter into giving Raleigh a birthday strudel with a sparkler in it. It was a big group of us too, Me, Natalie, Liz, Jason, Brittney, Michelle, Raleigh, Melissa, Emily, Megan, Mary, Katie, Emily and Caitlyn so we had some good laughs and jokes going. Afterwards we headed over to the Hafbrauhaus which is one of the most famous
beer halls in Munich. We had to split up because it was so crowded but we managed to find seats next to some Italians (from Milan of all places) We ordered these liter beers and we had a bet who could finish first and I won!! Hooray! Must be the Steigerwald in me (lets be honest, probably the Tuggle in me too). We ordered another round and the band was playing and they came to our table and stood on it and played it was really really fun. I can't wait for Leiderhosen to come into style. Tip for the road: do NOT where a vest to the Hafbrauhaus.. Melissa wore one and someone stopped her and asked if she worked there. HA I almost spit my beer up when she told me that. More pics from the Hafbrauhaus to come because I didn’t have my camera with me so I have to wait until others post them so I can steal them for my own. So in conclusion, I have been trying to add it up and I think in the span of the night I drank about 4 liters of beer. I don't know whether to take a
bow or throw up. It was super fun but I did have to pee like a race horse all night long and the train ride the next day was a little less than enjoyable. But Munich was fun, we walked around again the next day and saw some more sites, the worst thing about Munich is that stores are closed on Sunday. So instead Liz and I sat in on mass at St. Petes (the bar outside with the blankets was closed) All in all a very fun weekend!
This next week I am off to Venice for Carneval, Vienna for an opera, Budapest for a thermal bath, and Prague … I’m not sure what they are known for yet but I’m ready. I’ll try to email you while I’m on the road if I can!!! I miss you all and I love youu!
Ciao Ciao!
