Today was a really fun day. We got up, had breakfast, and left to go back to Triberg. We went to see the waterfall. We parked in a much better spot (not all the way at the top). We walked down, paid to get in, and continued to the falls. This one is broken up into 7 different levels/falls. It was more crowded than the other one, but still really pretty. We walked to the bottom of this one. It was also really cold by the fall! When we paid to get in, the lady gave us a map of things to see int he area, so after the waterfall we set off to see the world's first largest cuckoo clock. It's in a small town, Schonach, and off on a small road by a bunch ... read more

We headed off on our day trip to the Black Forest. We followed the Rhine on the Swiss side for a few kilometres, before turning left at the nuclear reactor and crossed over the river into Germany. The border guards just waved us and every other car through. But we stopped just so we could get our passports stamped, much to Nikki’s embarrassment. The drive was very pretty and scenic, we drove on small country roads through hillsides, picturesque farms and forest. We stopped at a small town called Titisee, which is on the one of the large seas (lakes) in the area. It was very beautiful, the Autumn leaves were very spectacular. We completed a large loop and eventually found our way back into Basel. Pia and Tim, two of Michael and Ursula’s grown up ... read more

When we woke up this morning, it was looking a bit gloomy outside and not at all like the kind of day you might want to go for a boat trip. This was what I had been hoping to do with everyone today and I was greatly cheered when the sun started breaking through the clouds after breakfast. Despite visiting Neustadt and the nearby popular spa resort of Titisee on many occasions, I had never once taken a boat trip on the famous lake so I wasn't about to let the weather scupper my plans. We herded ourselves into the car in time to catch another downpour but by the time we had parked up, the skies had cleared again and we made it down to the pier early enough to take advantage of a ... read more

Despite my recently twisted ankle still feeling a bit dodgy, I couldn't resist the offer to try out Nordic walking today. The weather was lovely and a walk in the local woodland sounded very appealing. My father drove us up to a tower perched on one of the highest hilltops and the view from the top was awesome. The air was so clear that we could see for miles and miles, right across Lake Titisee, the biggest tourist attraction in this region, and across as far as the French border. We then picked up our walking poles and with some scepticism about the whole Nordic walking versus normal hiking, headed deep into the forest. If you've ever wondered why they call it the Black Forest, it isn't because the trees are black as such but ... read more

Our original intention yesterday had been to travel south to see my grandparents who are now both in their 80s. The plan had been for my sister, Esther, to drive us down but she was far too ill to do it. Today, Franziska, my father's wife, came to the rescue and after a quick phonecall to see if they had time, we were zooming off to see only my grandpa who is currently recouperating in a spa resort after having a replacement knee put in. My grandma was too busy to see us at such short notice unfortunately. We took my grandfather for coffee and cake and I couldn't help but be impressed by how well he is walking just 5 weeks after his operation. It was also nice to see him on his own ... read more

We greeted our first full day in Germany with a lovely long lie-in that saw us emerging at gone 10am into the gorgeous summer sun. Gone were the rainclouds of yesterday and the world looked like a much cheerier place for it. We tucked in to one of my favourite German foodstuffs for breakfast - Bretzeln! They are like pretzels but much bigger, freshly baken and bready rather than crunchy. I was a happy bunny indeed. That´s more than can be said for my sister however, as she was looking worse today than she did yesterday despite sleeping for almost 12 hours. She was sick all through the night so didn´t put up a fight when we suggested she see a doctor. Glynn and I tagged along for the ride to the clinic and then ... read more

A mere matter of two and a half weeks ago we were arriving back in the UK after a year's worth of adventures abroad and yet here we are now, back on foreign shores and busy lapping up yet more history, culture and spectacular scenery. It´s good to be back! Our trip to the Black Forest in south-west Germany began with a very wet start to the day. We had intended to take the bus to Birmingham airport but it was chucking it down with rain and the prospect of gettng drenched on a 20-minute walk to the bus stop was far from appealing. Instead, we swallowed our financial pride and forked out a whopping £10 for a taxi that barely took 15 mintues to get there. To think that in South America we could ... read more
