Blue world
My camera has a setting that does this, it's magic Friday - I'm off to see my other half - together in Munich two years ago we survived the chaos and stupid girl politics by combining our forces and coming out on top. The trip to Heidelberg was wonderfully uneventful. Managed to make both trains and their connections. People watching in Vienna before departure was fabulous - I lost count of the number of people wandering around the station with home-made signs around their necks all but begging for tickets to Sunday's final game. Made it to see Jessi alive in one piece, oh - with a brutal illness that threatened to knock me over at any second. I was living in a beautiful place called Denial and there's no sickness there.
Met the host family that Jessi's been living with/working for/abused by and we had a BBQ dinner where they were kind and gave her the night off and did things like help with the dishes... Random and miraculous I tell you. We headed out walking that night to explore a bit of Heidelberg and my lovely tour guide showed me the old bridge and the castle at night as well as the old neighborhood - it was
lovely. A quiet old person night of coffee and bailey's at our last stop and then a lazy walk back home again. I felt bad for being too mellow, but hey - when grandma needs a break, grandma needs a break.
Saturday - Spent the morning with the kids and then it was off to Ferdi's Sommerfest; it was a kindergarden school concert that was actually kinda cute. They were blue kids who were sent other colours by the colour King. Now, the blue world didn't like new colours and refused to be their friends or play with them. Suddenly, this part Jessi and I are both unclear on, a blue kisses another colour and a new colour appears! Umm, what? Isn't that a bit much for kindergarden? I mean I will accept that we're in Europe (Germany at that), and when it comes to sex and love they for the most part are far more open and out about it than we are, but still! Ah well, battled with the kids - took some pictures and then we were off to hang out in an executive lounge of sorts with Ellen and her husband on their last
night in Heidelberg. Wow - it was beautiful and we met a friend of theirs who drove us in his Porscha into town with the promise of playing tour guide the following day. Again, pulled the grandma card and after one drink we wandered home babbling about theatre and the ways of the world. I'm boring company, what can I say?
Sunday - Up for amazing breakfast at the magical breakfast place that Jessi takes everyone too and then a guided tour through some beautiful history. Riding in a magical car we went to the Schloss and learned some new things and then over to the Tingstette and up to a monastery. That night it was back into town to try and find a place to watch the game. We spent the first half at one of the bar's we'd been to the night before and then the second half at a friend of a friend's flat. I'd made the decision the day before that it was easier for me to get on a night train after the game to Munich than to leave Sunday afternoon and pay for the hostel that night. Alas the Germans didn't pull through on this one and Spain walked away with their first Euro victory in 44 years. Kudos to the other team, the streets were dead quiet when we walked back to his place; the opposite of what they had been only an hour earlier as the kick off took place. Watched pieces of an incredible BBC documentary (
Planet Earth) and then it was time to take me to the train station. After a sad goodbye I was on the train to Munich - this is where the never-ending travel day starts.
Monday - 1:19am - Depart Heidelberg on train to Munich
5:25am - Arrive in Munich Hauptbahnhof
5:45am - Get on train to Munich airport
6:45am - Arrive at airport - check in, putter around, write blog, people watch
11:40am - get on flight to Toronto that was supposed to leave ten minutes ago
11:55am - actually leave Munich headed for Toronto
2:45pm (local time, +6 for Munich time) - arrive at Toronto
3:45pm - conquer customs, retrieve bag, battle the "simple, easy re-check in process" at Pearson Airport - get angsty
4:50pm - get on flight to Calgary, actually leave on time
7:00pm (local time, +2 for Toronto, +8 for Munich) - land in Calgary
8:00pm - arrive at home, wide awake... (2am Munich time)
And that's it folks - the end of the lovely adventure. It was a blast and I'm still sort of recovering, my body just crashes at night for a few hours and then I am up and about for the rest of the day. I don't feel really jet lagged and the sickness is sort of starting to wean. All in all I should be fully recovered by tomorrow
