The festival, Fêtes Renaissance Du Roi de L’Oiseau, turned out to be a small version of the Edinburgh one but with a mediaeval flavour and added pageantry.

We spent the morning with chores, blogging and lunch and then went into town to join the party. The steep and narrow cobbled streets thronged with the revellers, many of whom wore period costume, took us to the cathedral, which follows the contours of one of the volcanic plugs. We spent the rest of the afternoon enjoying performances from several groups at the small stages which had been erected around the town.

Our supper was a traditional meal of sausage and green lentils washed down spiced red wine. Then we followed the ‘Marchof the Women’ which was something to do with their victory over an invading army in the dim and distance past. For the rest of a boisterous evening we sat on the cathedral steps and were entertained with mediaeval music but with a strong modern beat.
