Lyon: night of 27th July - 30th July 2016 Geneva: 31st July - 1st August 2016 Arriving in Lyon from Barcelona late on the night of the 27th, we started our walk across town to our airbnb apartment. We immediately felt welcome in this city and really sensed a safe and calm vibe about the place and people, even walking down unknown streets at 11pm. With our small backpacks and the lovely mild temperature, we were quite happy walking a few k's to our apartment so we could gather in as much of the city as we could, admiring, comparing and contrasting to previous cities we had been. We walked over the large river which was lined with cute restaurant boats filled with people, music and happy vibes, and quiet house boats with pot plants, couches ... read more

I settled into my new environment fairly quickly. I liked my room, simply furnished, yet cosy. I met 4 of my hostess's children, 3 of her sons and her youngest daughter. Her youngest daughter, I can say spoke the most English in the family. We became friends easily enough. I spent my initial days in Lyon wondering around like a tourist, starry-eyed with wonder. The 16th century architecture captivated me. The narrow streets were endearing. Now, I am from Mumbai (or Bombay if you will) and if you will ever visit downtown Mumbai, you will encounter a lot of old world charm and archtecure from a few centuries ago. In a way my craze for Europe's old world charm stems from where I grew up. But coming back to Lyon, i found the city endearing. School ... read more

Last time I described how I hopped countries. I came from India to Canada and then from Canada to France. I described how I went to Paris and the city blew my mind. The view from the Eiffel Tower left my jaws hanging open. River boat cruise on La Seine. Ah! That was a pleasure of it's own. Did I mention what they showed us on the river cruise? They showed us the Louvre, and the prison where Marie Antoinette had been imprisoned before she was guillotined. And of course, you can always catch glimpses of the Eiffel Tower from that cruise. I described the panic attack I'd had at Paris Gare de Lyon where I could find no one who spoke English and I was terrified i would miss my train to Lyon because I ... read more

Lyon Last night we arrived in Lyon after dark. It is an exceptional pretty town to sail into by night. There are new unusual buildings fully lit up in different colours. Also as you look up to the hills all the old buildings are beautifully lit with the cathedral at the top being the crowning glory. Lyon lays at the point where the Rhone river and the Soane river converge or as the say confluence. It has a long and distinguished history for silk and textile making and is known as the world’s leading centre of textile design. We went on the usual walking tour with a guide for an overview and to hear a brief history. First stop in the morning was the famous food market Le Halles who famous patron is Paul Bacuse the ... read more

Woolly says – Having waved goodbye to my tusk eating friend all we needed to do was catch our next bus...... if we could find it! Arriving in good time I left the girls getting our morning croissants and trotted to the information area to check where we should go, armed with a piece of paper I lead the way to the front of the train station and looked around, lots of bus stops, seemed like the right place! It wasn’t, having asked again we were directed 500 metres further down the road where there were no bus stops...... Woolly says – Taking the initiative I popped into a café and asked again only to be redirected back to the bus stops! ........Back we went and I went and asked at another café, nope we needed ... read more

Tuesday 12 July 2016 Rain poured for most of our northbound journey. Neville welcomed the planned stop at Lyon. This stop was extremely significant for Mabel. Her only brother, Lyon, was named after this city. Her father, Sgt Wesley Charles Rivers Taylor, had travelled by train through France from Marseilles in 1916. After his time in Gallipoli he wrote the following in his diary: Thursday 30th March 1916 Arrived Marseilles 7 oclock. I am in love with France Friday 31st March 1916 Left the Briton at 8.30 & entrained an hour later Saturday 1st April 1916 Stunned by the beauty of France Sunday 2nd April 1916 We have been travelling for 26 hours. It is glorious. Hot tea is waiting for us at every main station. I am writing this on Les Laumes. (Venarey-les-Laumes is in ... read more

Normal stuff, breakfast, get ready and onto a bus for our tour. Today is a Culinary tour. We drive around the town, which is bordered by the Rhone river and the Saone river. Told lots of interesting bits about the history of the town, how silk was once a major craft of the area, and how the buildings were built. We then got off and started the old town walking tour. This old town is a bit different. They have lots of hidden walk ways that are behind doors - most times locked. When you open the door you walk through a corridor into a courtyard where there are say 10 apartments. These are called Traboules and were used by merchants to get between streets easily. They were also used by the Resistance fighters in the ... read more

In Marseille, I had reached a crossroads. Originally, I was going to stick to the Mediterranean, following the southern coast of France along the French Riviera to Italy - but that was going to be too expensive. I considered going directly to Italy and Turin - but by now I had become travel-weary and really just wanted to stop somewhere to regroup for a few days, preferably for free. And thus I thought about going to Zurich where I have a friend - my mate Corb who I visited in Basel four years ago. So Zurich was the closest place I could get to for some much needed, cheap R&R - therefore, I decided to head north, stopping in Lyon en route. Finding reasonably-priced accommodation in Lyon was a struggle thanks to Euro 2016 - but ... read more

After a well earned break in La Tranche, the merry band looked at their map to look for their next well earned break !!! It was found at the foot of Mont Blanc and a town named St Gervais les Bains, and looked a bloody long way to drive!! The site here had been recommended by Philippa and Allen, so we knew it must be worth going to. It was decided to split the journey there into three parts. This was specifically decided by your correspondent, as there was no way I was driving all the way across France without beer. South of Limoges, south(ish) of Clermont Ferrand and north of Lyon were the lucky recipients of our custom, so let’s go through them in that order. First off was a camp site named Montreal, in ... read more

We put the black out blinds in our room down by mistake, and wake up at 9am thinking it's still the middle of the night. We walk across to Old Lyon in search of somewhere to get breakfast. Issy's not keen to cross Place Bellecour. She says the en-tout-cas will get into her shoes and make her feet hurt. The square's enormous, and I'm sure they could hold multiple tennis tournaments here simultaneously if they felt so inclined. It seems that the good residents of Lyon aren't into breakfasting in cafes. Grabbing a breadstick and a few croissants from the local boulangerie and munching on them at the kitchen table must be more their thing. The next square on the itinerary is covered in grass. Wherever we've seen grass in French towns it's usually been accompanied ... read more
