I was tired when I arrived yesterday and I could not find the shop to store my suitcase. Travel tip: do not use website Nannybag because you have to pay for the days ahead of time, and in this case in Toulon, the shop was several streets away from the train station where apparently no one knew the street or shop. There is a heat wave in France and that’s the wrong time to be searching the streets of Toulon for an obscure site. There is a sign in front of the station pointing to a tourist office, but I never found it, even today when I had more time and less stress. Yesterday I gave up and took a taxi to my destination. Travel tip: if the train station is too small to have its ... read more

The photos for Pisa have been added. There was some kind of problem getting them loaded last night but that was corrected today. Now, welcome to Toulon France! Unfortunately we managed to do something today that we’ve never done before. We had to make another visit to the Medical Center. Janet had a bad night and we were knocking on the Medical Doors 10 minutes before they were scheduled to open at 8:00. That didn’t work so we had to wait but they recognized Janet from 2 days ago and took her directly into a treatment room. They ran more thorough tests this time and decided she had a urinary tract infection. They gave her some nausea medicine and antibiotics by IV. After an hour of fluids to combat her dehydration, she started feeling better. But ... read more

The only way I know what region to choose when I'm writing these blogs is because I know what wine region I was in. France. Wine. Duh. SO. I'm really slacking on these posts, and now I'm going to Prague tomorrow (secret: it's actually November 14, and I'm just lazy and backdated this entry). Toulon. Yes. I went there. I left Lyon at some ungodly hour of the morning. Carine dropped me at the metro where I successfully got myself to the train station and unsuccessfully took three tries to print out my ticket at the machine because when the touchscreen is an inch away from the glass you're touching and there doesn't seem to be a backspace, it takes you about 10 minutes to print out a ticket you already paid for. Also, way too ... read more

We woke up a bit earlier than yesterday and ate some special K for breakfast. Lise was tired of just driving around and not enjoying the places we were so we went exploring for the first time. The Mistral was not in effect so we walked around the Mediterranean Sea. There were not any tourists because it’s the winter so we got to enjoy the Mediterranean without a lot of extra noise and activity. I took a panorama for my dad of the coast and skipped some rocks on the Mediterranean because they had awesome rocks. Here is where things get interesting. There were a number of rock formations that extended pretty far out onto the Mediterranean and I couldn’t help but go as far out on them as possible. Lise didn’t like walking on the ... read more

I am going with Lise, her friend Charlotte, and Charlotte’s Spanish boyfriend Juan Lu to Toulon in the south of France. I will be spending a fair amount of time there and even staying for New Years. On the way to Toulon, another girl named Celia carpooled with us because she was headed that way anyway and it made it cheaper for the rest of us. It was more than 12 hours of driving and Lise and Charlotte would switch off every 2 or 3 hours. Lise and Charlotte both brought food for a midday picnic but the weather wasn’t having any of it, so we had an indoor picnic at a rest stop that consisted of tabouleh, bread, ham, various cheeses, soda, and some chocolate cake that Lise and I made prior to leaving. When ... read more

Woke up late and walked around the area for a bit while Juan Lu and Charlotte went to church. Lise and I said we would make food for them while they were gone so I cooked some chicken parmesan (called chicken parmesan even though I used Swisscheese). Everyone thought my food was good so I was happy about that. Charlotte, Lise, and Juan Lu took a siesta after they finished eating while I beat Loki in God of Thunder for the first time. After everyone woke up we went to a local park where there was an old castle that had never seen battle. The Mistral was blowing so there was some pretty crazy wind but it was still an awesome place to see and take pictures. At this point I realized ... read more

My long-awaited departure from Alsace took place last Wednesday (July 18th) at 16:00 to be exact. Saying good-bye to the family was as I expected: difficult, sad and surreal – it was one of those moments which you prepare for and think about for so long that when it finally happens, it almost doesn’t feel real. And I wish it hadn’t been real. I wish I hadn’t had to look at Gabriel, thinking that I’d never see him again as he is now; I wish I hadn’t had to hug each child one-by-one as they came to thank me for their goodbye present, thinking that I wouldn’t see them again for such a long time; and I wish I hadn’t had to say to Raphael, looking into his large hazel brown eyes that I was leaving. ... read more

Such a friendly nurse ! Popped in at 5.30am, practised a hesitant English “good-morning” and then extracted a few more phials full of blood from Bob’s arm. At least we could wash when we got up as I had brought our things from the Tandy. I was lucky and got plum jam with my bread-roll breakfast but Bob didn’t. Shame. No problem as I had brought in bags full of lovely fresh apricots and cherries which were far better than the jam. At 11am, fortunately just before we had both died of boredom, and just before we had started to panic that we were going to be stuck in the hospital for ever, a very nice doctor appeared, obviously more senior than our man from the infectious department who had been insistent Bob had to stay ... read more

Bob feeling much better when he woke, temperature down thanks to antibiotics, and enema had worked. The staff here are great. They seem to enjoy having the novelty of an “English Patient” (isn’t that a film?) so they can try out their English on us. The lady who came to change the bed was really interesting and spoke perfect English as she had worked for a while in the US. Previously a sport’s instructor, she had had a bad accident in the mountains and while in intensive care had decided to become a nurse. We are impressed by how well the room has been cleaned. Breakfast was brought for both of us but not 5* variety – throw away bowl of coffee or tea plus bread roll and butter. Doctor appeared at 10am and decided Bob ... read more

We hadn’t decided what we were doing with the day when we got up, fortunately as whatever we might have intended had to be abandoned. Realised that Bob was quite unwell. He had had his attack of “French Flu” well over a week before. It lasted a good 5 days and then he kindly passed it to me. We assumed at first that he had decided to have it back (though I still had the full blown variety myself). When he mentioned that, totally unusually, he’d not used the loo for about 5 days alarm bells rang and I asked campsite reception where I might find a chemist, knowing this was a public holiday ! Poor Bob had to ride the scooter 5 km down to Sanary only to find both chemists closed for the ‘Jour ... read more
