We were finally ready to move again, but this time as a sailboat! After a wonderful send off from our new friends, Marita and Erik, we headed out the channel (a very shallow one at that) into the harbor and into the Mediterranean to see if we remember how to sail. It turned out to be a lovely day for our first time out in a long time with the sails up. We decided to not go too far and anchored out at the archipelago of Ile Frioul which is located near the coastal city of Marseille. This archipelago has been owned by the city of Marseille since 1971. With its closeness to Marseille it is a very popular day trip away made easy with numerous daily ferry trips to the island. Our first day out ... read more

Finally Got Time To Go to Town

Another glorious sunny day and our last on the coast so we decided to make the most of it. Headed off down into town to visit the Artisan fair on the promenade. As a stained glass artist myself, as Joysofglass, handmade fairs are always a great attraction. This one was a bit of a disappointment. Last year we came across a superb ceramics fair in Cassis and I was hopeful this might be something similar. Just not in the same class. For example there were two stalls selling homemade biscuits which, however tasty (and actually I didn’t like the orange flavoured sample I tried) not quite what I was looking for. Only 3 stalls of interest, 2 of ceramics, but nothing to tempt me and 1 selling cacti. And only about 20 stalls in all. It ... read more

It was only as we were setting off and I looked at the road map to check the route we were taking that I realised where we were going. Not only that but I remembered that last time we had tried to stay on a campsite in Cavalaire sur Mer we had failed as they were all full. That was in early June 2011 and there is no doubt that there are still lots of campers around, not hopeful for our chances again this visit. We set off along the narrow roads which go down from La Colle sur Loup towards the coast. Everything here is built on hillsides so the roads tend to be narrow and quite windy. Bob soon became irritated by the route he had chosen. Suburbia complete with multiple road calming humps, ... read more

As we have at last found the sea after travelling lots and lots of miles to get here, we thought we should visit it today. Bob unloaded the scooter and while I was at the campsite reception reporting their wifi was useless at night, Bob had a brainwave. When I got back he had used it to transport the loo cassette up to the chemi-loo emptying point. When it’s two flights of stairs and really a bit of an uphill walk from the pitch to the sanitaires sometimes a little help is needed. We then scootered down to the town, which is a good mile downhill. Despite the slightly out of town campsite location and having rather a climb to get to the campsite facilities we are agreed that we like this campsite very much. We ... read more

Lavender's green dilly dilly.....lavender's blue - everywhere you go in Provence

Monday 11th October 2010 The forecast rain arrived in the early hours this morning and had largely subsided by 0830 when we came to. Breakfast was delivered to the van door in the form of fresh bread, croissants and pain au chocolat and shortly after we settled our bill with reception ( a very reasonable 60 Euros for 3 nights all in ) and set off towards Cannes. Traffic was heavy using the local roads and if it is this bad in October I’ll give the summer here a miss. After Cannes the traffic eased and we took the scenic Massif de Esterel to Frejus and from there onto Cavalaire sur Mer where we found the campsite de la Baie close to the town and harbour.
