1st Blog of 2014 Well we’re back on the road again, currently in France travelling down south towards some sunshine and eventually ending up in Croatia. 2nd May. St.Gengoux Le National,Burgundy We have been over in France for 3 weeks, and the weather has been mixed, but it is getting warmer, I can tell this as yesterday Alan removed his semit as it was warm and sunny and put on a pair of shorts! I on the other hand have had my shorts on for a number of days. However, as it is raining today, even though its 20˚ he is back to wearing a pair of jeans, t-shirt and a fleece, inside! 6th May. We are set beside the canal de Roanne à Digon at Roanne. We have been struggling with technology again as our ... read more

We decided to take a cruise up the Rhone on a paddle steamer to make it interesting for the boys. The Camargue is a vast marsh like land where the Rhone meets the Mediterranean, where black bulls are herded by gaucho like herdsmen called Guardians and where semi wild white horses roam. The Tiki III paddle steamer was a pleasant meander through the brackish waters looking at grey heron, flamingos, gulls, black bulls, white horses and a staged encounter with a guardian. It stretches all the way to the sea and as well as being a haven for bird life it is also full of mosquitoes. For some reason I read the bit in the book about mosquitoes and decided to ignore it rather than thinking “I must pack the DEET”. Needless to say this was a foolish mistake! We headed to the Parc Ornithologique du Pont du Gau which is an area of the Camargue which has been set up with birdwatching in mind. There is a 7km loop path and lots of hides and signs (but ... read more

Europe » France » Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur » Camargue September 3rd 2009

September arrived and it was time again to board the train for France. Our plan this trip was to spend two weeks in a gite near to the Camargue. Not an area that I had been to before so it left us with a huge shopping list of things to do and places to see. It was too far to drive straight down to our accomodation so on leaving the train we headed in the direction of Troyes - a city I had never seen before and one I felt was worth a visit. We arrived late afternoon and stayed at a Kyriad hotel on the outskirts of the city. It wasnt too far to drive in and we parked up on a convenient car park within walking distance of the main sights. A clean and ... read more
