Lille The walk from Lille Europe station to the Gare Midi is through a zone of brand new architecture which meets the 19C / 20C buildings in the boulevards by station. It was a bit noisy by night in our hotel near the station, an establishment named, ironically, Hotel Calm. Our first sortie took us along shopping streets to the Opera where we booked tickets for a quartet playing early music, the following night. As night fell there were large numbers of armed police, motor cycle cops, vans and armoured hardware, men and women in riot gear by Beaux Arts Square, we retreated fro a beer, aperos in a bar down by the station before setting off again for the Assiette du Marché, a swanky restaurant which had been the city mint in the past on ... read more

Off to France First step, sort the car up which we duly did - then found out the air conditioning didn’t work even though we had just had it regassed. Having spoken to the garage it seems working out the problem and fixing it was likely to cost more than the car was worth, so we decided to take the Astra instead. Shame as I wanted to get to 250,000 miles in the Touran! We caught the ferry from Dover to Dunkirk before heading to Lille where we met an old friend of Sue’s who I cleverly call Anne from France! The following day we went into Lille itself - me hobbling with my knee strapped from playing too much squash too quickly-Doh! Lille is bigger than I thought with a lovely old town. We have been in France before and for an extended period. On that trip we had a vehicle and spent most of our time in the smaller towns, villages and rural areas. A week or so in Paris is our only real experience of a French city. This time we decided to use the trains as our primary means of transport and check out some of the cities. Not too many, though. We prefer to move along slowly and take our time to have a look around. Lille is relatively close to the Netherlands and Belgium and is, therefore, the first French city we would come to. We had a bit to do at our first French railway station. We needed to collect rail tickets bought on-line, and organise and pay for our French Seniors Card. ... read more

It was that time of year again....8yrs this time! ? 10yrs of actual togetherness ❤️ James is now living with us full time and in the midst of his GCSE's so our options were quite limited as we couldn't be away from home for too long. Luckily our friend Neil had offered to come and stay for the weekend to keep an eye on James so at least the child care aspect was taken care of ? . Not that he actually needed looking after.....as a 15yr old James is very sensible and we had no concerns ? . NSPCC guidelines, however recommend that you don't leave under 16's over night so it was handy that Neil was available. We decided on Lille. The Eurostar ? took us right into the city centre and Andrew's work ... read more

Sorry no blog last night. It was a long day - up early and home late....So, today will be a rest and recovery day, starting with yesterday's blog. After a couple of days on bikes, our butts were begging us to spare them the bike seats. So, we headed out early (ish) for the north east city of Lille. Getting out of the city took a while with getting slightly lost combined with some road closures.....but then we found the A1 (not the sauce) and headed north. We played a car game of "country license plates" and found nearly all of Europe's plates (Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Luxembourg). The highways here are A, N and D and work the opposite of cup sizes (A is the biggest and D is very small). We made ... read more

France has never really appealed to me as a country to visit, yet I've seen some beautiful photos online of different parts of the country. I've heard reviews that you must be good at speaking French and not many people will speak English may have had some influence in me not wanting to explore this European country. A poor excuse since France is a neighbour to the UK making a daytrip possible. However, I decided to give France a try on my return from Belgium since I needed to catch a ferry back home from Dunkirk. My manager at work suggested I take a look at Lille, as its only about 80km away from Dunkirk. I found a hotel outside of the city centre with free parking and good motorway connections, and it was only a ... read more

Friday 17 July Avignon Avignon is still under the influence of the festival and the heat so we head out of town to the national park where the roman aqueduct Pont du Gard is maintained in a reserve along the river near Nimes. The aqueduct has survived for all these years and is a fairly imposing structure as I hope you can see from the photos. It is a significant gorge that it spans and it apparently carried water and foot traffic in those days. It is also situated in a lovely national park where people are escaping the heat by swimming and playing in and near the water. There is a group just arrived after kayaking from upstream and a group of American teenagers on bikes arrive as we are having coffee. They tell us ... read more

Hey guys! Hope you're all well This is my latest blog that will detail everything in the last month since I got back from my world trip! Firstly, and most importantly, the week after I got back it was finally Graduation time! Although the night itself went far too quickly with just a couple of hours for the ceremony and drinks afterwards, we made the celebration last even longer by having a graduation night out on the Friday with almost all our Geography class! Although I clearly drank too much it was a brilliant night out and really topped off the celebrations! The following week I went with my family over to Towcester racecourse where I made £60 from my winning horse! And a couple of weeks later I went up to Birmingham to visit the ... read more

The rain is falling softly outside the living room window causing the green of the trees to glow in a vibrant color. It is good to be home. Although "home" is a relative term. Our move into this new house is finally, almost, over. Here and there you can still see bare wall that needs to be touched up, or my brother's room that still needs the floor layed. But altogether, we've arrived, and it is a good feeling. I suppose, since this is my first blog entry, I should introduce myself. My name is Tessa, and I'm an MK who grew up all over Europe. Last year I went to the States to start my studies in English Literature, my first year in Virginia went by so quickly, it almost feels like a dream sometimes. ... read more

I have arrived in Lille and have been welcomed by Lise's family. The first few days have been spent by getting used to the time difference, eating as much French food as I can, and practicing my French (OK I admit it I played a lot of league of legends too). French food I've eaten includes pumpkin soup, zucchini soup, Pot'je Vleesch (different meats in gelatin), different cheeses, baguettes, croissants, and different patés (like a meat spread that you put on bread). Lise and I took a long walk around Wambrechies (Where she actually lives, a small area close to Lille) and I took a lot of pictures to make a stop motion video that I can hopefully upload. We had planned to go to Strasbourg before Christmas to visit Lise's friend Alex and enjoy the ... read more
