Honfleur We awoke at 5am to a beautiful, peaceful morning. Mike checked the forecast one last time and saw slight seas and gentle winds so we decided today was the best day to make the 8-9 hour trip to Honfleur. We were out of the harbour and sailing into the stunning pink, purple, orange and yellow sunrise before 6. The crossing under brilliant blue skies and gorgeous sunshine was calm and peaceful other than a choppy section when we accidentally went over a sand bar and more ‘confused’ seas as we rounded Point de Barfleur (the headland). Mike simply steered us further out to sea and the panic was over. I have decided I hate headlands. They cause havoc with the tides and sea state and need to head on out of my life. At around ... read more

Updated... 30/07/10 Well my message to my friend remains without answer for the moment... I hope that my invitation to dinner or a casual drink will seduce... I hope that if the letter has proven of no interest, the post card that was attached to the letter will be more explecit on how I feel about our possible relationship.... read more

LeHavre, France, 13th July, 2010. Well, the journey is almost over. I am takingh it easy in LeHavre whilst Lyn is in Paris with friends. I decided not to make the blood clot any worse by walking around a city I have no real interest in. I am really looking forward to England tomorrow and seeing the family, visiting my old stomping grounds and most importantly, visiting the grave of my Dad as I have not had the chance to since he passed on. That will probably be a very emotional time for me. I shall most certainly miss the fantastic freinds we have made on this cruise. They have made the boring days at sea a lot more enjoyable. I was once told that life is like a train journey, you start off on that ... read more

Next stop was two overnight specialities..... Honfleur and Mont St Michel It took forever for us to find our accomodataion in Honfluer. When we finally found it we discovered it was a Bed and Breakfast that was in it's beginnings. Run by an english couple that welcomed us into their homes and were very friendly but for the price we paid the room was very basic and could not be reached without a car. Honfluer didn't really live up to my expectations. I had read about it in Conde Nast Traveller (a magazine I usually only read for the only if's) and although it was a pretty town I felt it lacked the charisma that came so warmly through the glossy magazine pictures. Honfluer was built around the lives of seaman which is reflected in every ... read more

Honfleur was a wonderful surprise. We took the guided walking tour with a local guide provided by UniWorld (really tio notch). After the tour, we signed up for a late bus back to the River Baroness and stayed on to enjoy this charming town on our own. We had a wonderful meal at a sidewalk cafe next to the old harbor. Wes and the waiter had a little "to do" about speaking French (or not) and shrimp vs. oysters! But all was delicious beyond words when the food and wine were served. We liked the shops here, but our luggage space is limited. We met a couple of artists painting along the old harbor and bought a miniature painting (the paint was still wet) directly from a working artist, who with there with her husband (also ... read more

Tour de Chev: Blogday 1 Wednesday 16th September So we finally set off: up at the crack of dawn heading to France for some culture, ancient monuments in Carnac Brittany , and cave paintings in the Dordogne, Lascaux, but most mostly for some sun having been deprived of the same for the third summer in a row. The Mighty Chev was serviced, cleaned, and ready to head for a country where left hand drive was the norm rather than the exception. We left for Portsmouth at 7.15am planning to catch the midday ferry to Le Havre. As usual the Chev drove like a dream and we arrived in Portsmouth half an hour before loading began - time for a coffee and sticky bun in the terminal café. Although the weather in Cardiff had been very overcast ... read more

Many years ago, during the lovely years of high school, I took two years of French. Aside from learning the language, my teachers often talked about the many different geographical regions of France. It was during these lessons that I began an life-long love affair with France. Although I had never visited the country, I knew that when I would finally have the opportunity to visit it someday, I would forever fall in love. I was so intrigued, and often times overwhelmed, by the size of the country and the incredibly long list of things that there was to do and see. When we learned of Mont St. Michel and it's dramatic setting and history, I knew I would have to one day see it with my own two eyes. When I read that France, the ... read more

Thursday, July 16 - St. Audoen’s Church, Dublin Castle, Irish Music Archives, St. Stephen’s Green and Iveagh Gardens After Dean returned from the pool, we took the bus into the city. We took the Hop On Hop Off Bus, and we heard someone say, “Hey, Connecticut!” It was the California couple, they told us all about the women swooning during Jeff’s song last night. We exchanged emails, and left them at Dublin Castle, which is the main government building from which the English ruled for so many years. We decided to go to St. Audoen’s Church first. As usual, our OPW guide was really into his subject, regaling us with the history and legends surrounding the building, its relics, and the “lucky stone” a Celtic cross marking stone housed inside the church. From there, we headed ... read more

Back to the Normandy coast and the quaint old fishing port of Honfleur. It is situated at the mouth of the Seine River, opposite it's larger and more well known neighbour, Le Havre. It's Vieux Bassin is where most visitors are attracted to, with its multitude of restaurants around the harbour. There was a cruise ship in while we were there, so full of English tourists. A pleasant change from the day before at Vesailles, full of Japanese tourist groups. Lunch in the park, overlooking the English Channel, Seine river and the impressive Pont du Normandie. Back in town a visit to the church of St Catherine. The original stone church had been destoyed, this one was built in the 15th century at the end of the 100 Years War. No stone was available as it ... read more

Well after a couple of days fighting either cold or flu symptoms I finally managed to get on my way down to the ferry at Portsmouth to make the crossing to Le Havre and the start of my holiday to France, Germany and Austria. I took my usual route down to Portsmouth avoiding any motorways and allowing more time for stop, the run was quite pleasant and uneventful although it was damp conditions but with only occasional bits with heavy spray. I arrived at Portsmouth with 1 ½ hours to spare which gave me time to chill out and have a drink and pick up an electrical adaptor before boarding the ferry for the crossing to Le Havre. Once off the ferry and heading out of the port, I was amazed at the queue of trucks ... read more
