November 8 – Caen – I got up early again and did a little homework and then drank my tea and thought things over. Then I went downstairs and asked the manager if it would be OK for me to bring my baggage down and leave them while I went out and come back around noon to get them and go to the other hotel. She said that would be fine. So I left my luggage and turned in my key and walked over to the tram stop Bernieres and caught the tram. I took the tram all the way out till it ended at the Herouville St Clair stop and got off. I watched which way the people were going and noticed that most of them headed off between two buildings. So I figured if ... read more

November 7 – Caen – Sword Beach – I got up early and tried to line up a hotel room using my computer but ran into some problems because some of the hotels wouldn’t let me use my Visa Debit to book a room, they wanted a regular credit card. So I used the book on Caen I had gotten from the tourist bureau and wrote down the hotel names, street addresses etc., while determining to do it the old fashioned way and walk over to the hotels to check them out. As I was checking out of the La Fontaine I asked them if they could recommend a hotel nearby. They said they knew of one and could call them for me. I said that was great since I didn’t know enough French to call ... read more

November 6 – Crossing the channel and arriving in France – I embarked from Portsmouth last night at 22:45 onto the good ship Normandie of the Brittany Lines. I was surprised with the size of the ship, it was huge. I had thought that luggage weight would be a problem but they not only didn’t weigh or look at our luggage but our luggage was out affair. In other words the passenger totally deals with it. If you can‘t carry it don’t bring it! In order to book a ticket I had to reserve a seat but when I got to it most of us had been stuck in a corner of a side room. After seeing how many empty seats there were I wandered around a bit and found some seats up directly in the ... read more

A long, long time ago there was a famous man who went by the name of William the Conqueror. Perhaps you have heard of him? Well this William the Conqueror, William I, or some liked to call William the Bastard, decided that he should build himself a beautiful castle. I often think I should do the same, but I don't have an empire so it would seem a little silly to have one. Where to build? Because he was the ruler of such a vast territory, he had many options. I can see him walking around pondering this question just a few years short of a thousand years ago, "On the sea, in the forrest, in the mountains? How about Caen!" Caen, Really Bill? To avoid all confusion, due to the multiple names that he goes ... read more

Ah Caen, the city that... I know nothing about. It was close to the beaches and easily accessible. Making it to the correct address was a relief. But I did not have the key to the apartment that I was renting for the weekend. The owner's mother was to meet me there and give me the key. Looking at the call button list and having no clue what his last name was, or what floor he was on, I got a little nervous. An elderly woman was about to enter the building, so in broken French I asked if she knew a Chris that lived there. Blank stare. Then she started rambling away. I skipped trying to find a middle language and showed her the name on my phone. Still nothing. Shortly after that, another woman ... read more

After a week I Nantes, I was finally settling in and getting a grasp on the day-to-day routine of the locals...Just kidding. I still have no clue what is going on around me half the time. Everyday is an adventure. Life would be so simple if the locals spoke English and the signs were readable, but that is the beauty of it. I have to figure it all out. It is like trying to understand a new concept, a new way of life. While on my daily adventures I have missed trains, gotten yelled at, gone the wrong direction on trains, and probably said inappropriate things in French to the locals. Best/worst of all, I have definitely walked more this past week, then I have during my whole life. My grandest of all walks was last ... read more

Today was completely devoted to the history of the Allied invasion of lower Normandy, during and after D-day. This was my main purpose in coming to Caen, to see the beaches where so many people gave their lives and to gain a better understanding of the scope of the battles that were so decisive in the battle for Europe. Most of the tripwas spent at the Omaha(American) section of the battle field, with several stops heading eastward back to Caen. In the photos I've posted you will see photos of a cliff near the beaches. This is where the Rangers were sent in to climb the cliff and clear the way for the rest of the soldiers, thought bad weather reeked havoc on those plans. The small craters you see are actually blast cratersfrom Allied bombing ... read more

Bonjour mon Amis! I am in France today after arriving via the overnight ferry from Portsmouth, England. I've been in France for only half a day now and I freaking love it. I am staying in a cute hotel near the main city center. Today I set out on foot to see what William the conqueror, and others, have done to leave their mark on the city. The city is fairly easy to around, with the enormous church and castle serving as good travel markers. I ran into a faRmers market where snails and oysters sat along an array of beautiful breads, olives and crepe vendors, among others. The streets are clean and on this Sunday, absolutely everything is closedexcept for a handful of restaurants. A parade walked past my hotel, celebrating what, I'm not sure, today's Pentecost, ... read more

Got up and returned to the house for 6am to empty it. The landlord of our house is meeting us at 9am to hand over the keys. Before this we need to get everything packed into the car. Realised by about 8am that it is not all going to fit. Sorted some items out for the neighbours to look after till our next visit home. A lot more of the items got sent to the charity shop than was originally planned, but maybe it was what we needed. A very emotional time. Left the house about 10.00 and headed to Portsmouth for our 2.45 ferry to Caen. Arrived at Caen at about 10pm and headed for our booked hotel on the edge of town. Bedded down for the night 23.15 French time. ... read more

Today we left our hotel earlier since it was Sunday thinking that the WWII sites around the beaches of Normandy might be busy. It was a very interesting day today. We first went to Pointe du Hoc where the US Rangers silenced the German gun battery by climbing a 100 ft. high cliff in the face of German machine gun fire. Of the 225 soldiers that assaulted the cliff only 90 were fit to fight after 1 ½ days. They still managed to keep control and push the Germans inland. The landscape was what you might think the moon would look, with big craters caused by bombs from planes and artillery fire from ships. Even with the pictures I took it is hard to imagine the devastation there. There were still bunkers and barbed wire there ... read more
