Normandy - site of Operation Overlord - June 6, 1944; The Longest Day, The Day of Days Up early and on the bus again this time for transit from Paris to the Normandy coast along the English Channel and to visit the landing beaches of D-Day. In Normandy, above Omaha Beach, is the site of thousands of US graves. The site of the US Memorial has been returned to the US and is US ground, not French ground. The Memorial is a powerful reminder of that era. The site is the second burial ground for many of those who died that day. The first burial ground was established above the water line just inland with dog tags left as identification. Later, more formal burial and memorial activities were performed. Hi Everyone. Even though we're running a month behind, Gina and I really are trying to catch up with the blog. Since we hit the European continent, our days have been marathons and we're very sorry that the entries have been slow going. We promise to have at least 2 up in the next day -- Gina has even been typing in the car as I drive. We've done about 3300 Ks (~2000 miles) since June 21 and are still having a blast. So, we got back to Bayeux around 3 in the afternoon and we stopped at a megastore called Eleclerk (or something similar). The store was like a cross between a walmart and a costco, and we grabbed tickets to the Ben Harper concert that evening in Caen. After getting the tickets and some food we took the car back the rental place. I went inside to discuss the window and pay. As it turns out, the guy just kind of shrugged when I showed him the window, and they didn't charge me, and there was no argument. So, about 15 minutes later, we walked next door to the train station and hopped a train to Caen. When we got to Caen, we set out to find a place to stay. There's no hostel in Caen, so ... read more
