Our main agenda for the day was to take the RER C train from La Defense Station to Versailles Rive Gauche Station. We bought the train+entrance combo tickets to the Chateau de Versailles from the SNCF booth at the La Defense station, to avoid the crowds at the gate. I was hungry and seeing Mac Donald’s next to the ticket counter, went to buy breakfast as we had a 20 minute wait for our train. Mac Donald’s sucked! Being used to the quick service in US, I was irritated when they took their own sweet time to serve me. Every couple of minutes Rajesh would look at my watch and announce that we were going to miss the train. Exactly 15 minutes later, the cashier brought out our order and added a chocolate muffin for good ... read more

Saturday morning we caught the RER train out to Versailles, 20 minute trip. Arrived in the town by 9, it's an easy 5 minute walk to the chatuea (it's pretty hard to miss). It's big, really big. It's a grand entrance into the complex, the buildings standing over you, extending in all directions. We toured the king and queen's state apartments and all the various rooms accompanying those (for example, the queen has a guard room, a room for her guests to wait in, her bedroom, changing rooms....). Every room is opulent, decked out in gold leaf, gold embroidery, fine fabrics, furniture, paintings and sculptures. Every ceiling was a work of art. The hall of mirrors was impressive, it exhibits a grand feeling. The grounds and gardens are immense, extending into the horizon. The fountains are ... read more

Last weekend off in Paris Well, I have just spent my last two days in Paris when I don't have work doing what I do best, running around visiting sights and ppl and taking tonnes of photos! Wednesday and Thursday were my two days off for the week, and they were one after the other, just like a real weekend! So very exciting for anyone working at the hostel! As i'm off about exploring from the end of next week this past week has really been my last week to go about paris and do those last few things that I still hadn't gotten around too. Going to Versaille is one of those things. Wednesday started early for me, I finished my tuesday night shift by 2:30 and was in bed by 3am waiting for my ... read more

We left Chennai at roughly 3:15 am on December 30. Such an ungodly hour. Yet the Chennai airport never sleeps and was bustling. No problems getting on our flight even though it was a bit late leaving for Paris. We arrived in Paris at about 10 am local time. We had traded in some of Anant's Hilton Honors points for a free one-night stay right near the airport. After India, it seemed extra luxurious to stay in what normally would have been an $800/night room. After we checked in, changed our clothes and got some breakfast, we took two RER trains west to the town of Versailles, about 45 minutes away. The main attraction there is the Palace. Built around 1689 by King Louis XIV,.its quite a sight even from the distance. An entire avenue stretches ... read more

Château de Versailles If you are in Paris make sure you make the effort to get to Versailles - the former home of Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI. This is our second visit and we still have not managed to take it all in. Al and Melissa had to get back to Gare du Nord for their train to London so we did not get to explore as much as we may have liked, but that just leaves us more to look at next visit. 22nd October 2007 - Giuseppe Arcimboldo Together with Jean and Beatrice, we went to an exhibition at the Musée de Luxembourg. The exhibition of paintings by a 16th century Italian artist - Giuseppe Arcimboldo. His work was amazing, his portraits use vegetables and plants painted in such a way as to ... read more

The next day we went to Versailles. I must say that Louis XIV is all sorts of crazy. This place is unbelievable. It also makes me appreciate that over-the-top "Marie Antoinette" movie a lot more. Anyway, these pics will not do it justice and I didn't get a chance to see all of the grounds but here they are: ... read more

Bonjour, tout le monde! Here I am, back in Versailles, and it feels absolutely amazing to be speaking French and visitng all my French friends, though of course I miss everyone back home as well. I have a super-long update that I'm planning to post soon to fill you in on all the details of my trip, but right now I'm on the de la Bigne's computer with it's crazy french keyboard, so I'm going to keep it brief. I'm not even over my jetlag yet, but I've already been to the Cathedral St. Denis, the park du Versailles behind the chateau, and out to dinner with the whole Furman group. Tomorrow I'm either going to head for the Musee du Cluny to see some famous tapestries (lady and the unicorn, anyone?), or go to the ... read more

Today should be the most difficult day in my Paris trip. Not sure if it was because of jet lag or my laziness, I left an hour later than scheduled, and it was already 10:30 when I arrived at Chateau de Versailles. The main gates themselves were gorgeous enough to hold your breath. Passing through the plaza in front of the gates, I came to the entrance of the palace. I followed the chaos and arrived at the chapel. Wow, finally I unveiled the palace. The first thing I saw was a huge organ while sunlight penetrated softly via the coloured window. Next I climbed up the marble staircase and reached the living place of Louis XIV and his queen on the 1st floor. No matter in bedrooms, study room or guest room, all of the ... read more
