The great thing about staying in a B&B is the quaintness and the fact that the owner is usually extremely friendly. That's certainly how it is where I'm at. This morning I literally opened my door to the living room, and sat down to a home-cooked breakfast. The family dog, Farah, laid at my feet the entire time. And I think I definitely got on the host's good side by admiring her book collection, especially her prized book of Charles Baudelaire's poetry. She's letting me have breakfast earlier than usual tomorrow, since I have to leave early. After hopping on my bike, I set off for the relatively leisurely ride down to Chenonceau, the absolute best of the many chateaux in the Loire. The ride was a little over an hour, and wound through a beautiful ... read more

Left an overcast Les Eyzies in the early morning, setting out on a day of something like 4 train transfers. First up to Perigueux, then over to Liborne, until finally taking the fast TGV up to St. Pierre des Corps, and then the regional train 10 minutes to Amboise. Here by around 3:30ish. Nice and easy, plenty of time for transfers. I'm here in the Loire because this is the part of France where all of the best chateaux are located. They stretch up and down the Loire from here in Amboise up to Blois, and then also in the surrounding countryside. Past kings of France have at various time lived here, and their nobles, to be close to court, built grand mansions in the same area. Another cool fact about Amboise is that this is ... read more

Since yesterday was such a big day and we had missed seeing anything of Blois, we started with Blois. Close to the hotel was the Royal Chateau Blois and we had all opted for one chateau per day as there simply isn't the time to fit more than one in as well bike the distances between. The Royal Chateau was well worth the visit it having been the residence of several French kings (too many to list). It is also the place where Joan of Arc went in 1429 to be blessed by the Archbishop before departing with her army to drive the English from Orleans. The chateau was built over the period from 13th to 17th century and is centred around a large courtyard. We were able to visit the royal apartments with huge rooms ... read more

Geo: 47.4104, 0.981122 The Chateau d'Ussé was the chateau we visited in the morning. This stronghold at the edge of the Chinon forest was first fortified in the eleventh century by the Norman, Seigneur of Ussé. The site later passed to the Comte de Blois, who rebuilt the chateau in stone. This chateau was one of several that inspired Walt Disney in the creation of many of the Disney Castles. In the afternoon we visited Château d'Azay-le-Rideau. The chateau was built between 1518 and 1527, and is one of the most popular of the Loire Vallet chateau. For dinner we went to Auberge de Launay, which is a restaurant we visited on our last trip to the Loire Valley. ... read more

Geo: 47.4104, 0.981122 After leaving our airport hotel, we met our friends Liz and Darrol and their daughters Chloe and Ciara at Charles de Gaulle Airport and headed for the Loire Valley, south of Paris. We drove straight to Chateau Chambord, which is the largest château in the Loire Valley. The chateau was built to serve as a hunting lodge for Francois I of France, who maintained his royal residences at Chateau de Blois and Chateau d'Amboise. Chambord was constructed between 1519 and 1547.After viewing Chambord, we drove to our accommodation at Amboise. The large home we are staying in has a troglodyte cave, which is our bedroom. The room is literally carved out of the rock cliff. Off to see some more chateau tomorrow.... read more

We feel terrible about falling behind on the blogs, it's been a rough couple of days (more on that in a sec). I forgot to mention on last night's blog that we did laundry before leaving the apartment in Paris! For the most part everyone still line dries their clothes, but this apartment features a washer and dryer in one (why don't we have these in the US?). They are very very tiny so not a lot of clothes at one time but it certainly did the job. The only downside is that the dryer is actually heated with water around the cylinder. I know this because in the morning when I pulled out the clothes, the jeans were wrinkled beyond recognition. I tried to "re-toss" on 'dry only' and heard water (slight panic attack) and ... read more

Our time in Paris has been very busy. When we originally booked our accommodation we had been unable to get the first night at the B&B we preferred so as a result the first night was spent in a very ordinary hotel in what resembled a cramped dusty attic. Fortunately it was only for the one night and we were gone first thing in the morning. Where we moved into our preferred B&B appartment which had plenty of space, was very homely and had everything we needed. After we had seen the Eifel Tower and Palace of Versailles. John, Hayley and Carolyn were really wearing Tanya and I down with the question "So what day are we going to Disneyland?" and John was no longer accepting the answer "Disneyland is closed today". So we thought we ... read more

Geo: 47.4125, 0.98266Visited the Chateau Du Clos Luc (Parc Leonardo Da Vinci) in the morning. Leonardo was brought to the Chateau at the age of sixty by King Francois 1 in 1516. Leonardo was given this chateau and he lived there for the remainder of his life. Leonardo was not only one of the finest painters to have ever lived, he also designed the following:-- early design of a plane- army tank- machine gun- helicopter- mill- parachute- double winch- paddle boat- diving suit- gear cogs and many more inventions too numerous to list.He also discovered plant growth and nutrition before botany was a science. He studied the human body and drew the musculo-skeletal system in detail. In the afternoon we visited Chateau de Chernonceau. This chateau adjoins and spans the River Cher. It is a beautiful ... read more
