Today things just didn't work out. But, really, that's okay, mainly because I tend to be superstitious about travel, and look out for signs. This morning I got a glaring sign when, having literally been on my bike for 2 minutes, both tires exploded beneath me. Not just one tire, but both. That has to be rare. To top it off, all of this happened right in front of the tourist office, where I rented the bike. And the two ladies who rented the bike to me saw it, and rushed out to see if I was okay. I was going so slow nothing really happened, just kind of slammed against the curb. But these two ladies were very concerned, helped me inside, were almost too attentive, gave me back all of my money, and overall ... read more

Travel really is all about madness, but a type of joyous madness, where it's a pleasure to go insane. I say this because I can't believe I'm sitting here in the giant room of a French family's villa, nestled right up against the Vezere River, in the little hamlet basically of Les-Eyzies-de-Tayac. Not in a million years would I have imagined I would be here. Can you even pronounce where I am? I love travel, that weird madness that drives you into villages and countries you never thought you would've stepped foot. A pretty cool thing. And today in general was just a beautiful day. This part of France is truly God's country. Endless rolling green hills, tiny villages with tiny churches, and farmland everywhere you look. It's the type of place you imagine Eden might've ... read more

We set off on the scooter, quite early, to visit the Grotte de Rouffignac. The river valley was shrouded in mist and looked quite spooky but as we drove up and away from the river we left the chilly mist behind and had a lovely ride through the rolling countryside. It was about 20 km but an easy run and we got to the cave before it opened. This was deliberate as we didn’t want to be told, the same as the previous day at Font de Gaume, that all tickets for the day were sold. Not a problem at Rouffignac we discovered as there is no pre-booking. These caves are a real treasure to visit as they contain prehistoric cave drawings and engravings. About 150 animals are drawn in all, on the walls and ... read more

Off to a reasonable start today as we wanted to get to the market in Les Eyzies-de-Tayac and French markets are, usually at least, strictly mornings only. Only 10 minutes along the winding road which follows the river gorge, to the town, which we found to be very busy as a few coachloads of ‘tourists’ were also there. The market was disappointing as it was not what we wanted / needed. Wanted fresh vegetables but on sale was wine, foie gras, walnuts, cheese and sausages, in fact all the local produce specific to this region. No help for us though who wanted simple things like lettuce and beans. After a wander round and finding that the shops also only sold goose and vineyard related produce we went along to the Grottes de Font de Gaume on ... read more

The little row of houses which is built into the St Eyzies cliff face. These houses have no back gardens and think the rooms at the back must be quite dark!

That’s it. We have left the coast firmly behind us and there will be no more ozone packed sea air for us to breath for a while. We took the ring road (Rocade) out of Bordeaux to get us across the two rivers, before switching to a quieter A road. Quiet enough on the roads today though, as usual for France on a Sunday when trucks are banned from all the roads, even motorways. I just looked that up as, today, we did see half a dozen Spanish trucks on the motorway near Bordeaux which surprised us. It seems that transport of livestock and frozen / perishable food is allowed). Drive today was just over 100 miles and pretty well due East. We quickly picked up the Dordogne river valley and followed it most of the ... read more
Bergerac gorgeous town but we visited it a couple of years ago so just drove through this time
We followed rivers all the way, this was just a bit of one but pretty with the high ripening corn behind
At one point the Dordogne was absolutely full of swans. Hundreds of them..
