I thought it was finally time to sit down and write an update of what has been happening with us as the blog page has been gathering dust since November last year. I’ll try to keep it to the point, but it does require that I go all the way back to the beginning of December, so you may want to grab a cuppa before diving into this. At the beginning of December, I packed my “ABAYA” (cultural dress) and headscarf and flew off to Saudi Arabia. I had to get special permission to get a visa as normally married women are not allowed to visit the country without their husbands. The purpose of the visit was to attend the 1st Annual Saudi Arabian Audiology Congress which was held in Riyadh. For a first time conference ... read more

I realised the last few blogs have all been about trips we’ve been taking in Europe and I figured it was about time we wrote an update about our lives in Denmark. It’s now October and coming up on a year since we arrived in Denmark. I can’t believe how times flies. The summer is now definitely over and we’re left wondering if this year’s winter will be like the last (lots of snow). The apartment we live now has pretty much everything we need, except an outdoor setting for our balcony, which we now don’t need because it’s going to be too cold to use it anyway. Our cats arrived back in mid-June and they have settled in nicely. We’re lucky to have a wonderful neighbour upstairs who babysits them when we go on our ... read more

... read more

Note to self #1: Never trust the ferry times stated in the ferry's own Web site. Note to self #2: If foolhardily choose to ignore #1, plan to be at ferry terminal at least a half hour early. We spent the morning in Ribe revisiting the brooding castle ruins that we had seen only from afar and in near darkness the evening before. After that, we went back to our B&B, paid and said goodbye to our wonderful B&B host, promising to stay in touch by email and Facebook. I had figured in a 2-1/2 hour drive from Ribe to Svenborg, where we were to pick up a ferry to the island of Ærø. Despite leaving Ribe at noon, we got to the ferry terminal just in time to wave goodbye to the 16:15 departure (that ... read more

Our B&B host, Ulla, sat with us at breakfast this morning so we were able to pick her brain on what to do for the day. She suggested the Viking Center in Ribe. It took a little time before we found the place. While standing in line, we noticed that every family had a child/children under the age of 10 in tow. When we got to the front of the line and found out the cost of the tickets, we demurred. DKK 90 per person (none of us could pass for under age 13) was a little spendy, especially when we had already gone to a Viking Ship Museum only yesterday. Additionally, we couln't be out all day sightseeing as we had earlier made plans to cook dinner for our B&B hosts -- Ulla, her little ... read more

Today we bid a fond farewell to Copenhagen as we leave our home exchange apartment to drive to other parts of Copenhagen. We spent the morning finalizing the packing that we had started last night, then started a thorough cleaning of the apartment so we could leave it the way we had found it -- that's just common courtesy of home exchanging. There were sheets to be washed (and beds to be re-dressed after the bedding is washed), breakfast dishes to put away, kitchen to wipe down, bathroom to scrub and floors to vacuum and mop. Surprisingly, including our own packing time (remember, NOT light travellers!), everything took just three hours to finish. Since we had a late start, waking up at 10:00, by the time we 'checked out' and started driving, it was already 13:00. ... read more

Kerteminde, 08.08.2011. ... read more

Jane & Jonna met me at the airport & we went back to Jane's apartment in Copenhagen. After dropping off the bags, we went into town & saw parts of old Copenhagen including the old harbor area called Nyhavn, with it's quaint coloured buildings & yachts from around the world. Copenhagen is currently hosting a display of baby elephants called Elephant Parade raise funds to save Asian elephants from extinction, so I'm on a mission to see how many baby elephants I can capture. ... read more

Hi all. It's Dan once again writing this blog. We are enjoying the Danish warm weather at the moment. Most days have been sunny and warm with temperatures around 20C. As Jes mentioned in the last blog, I started work at Interacoustics almost 2 months ago and I'm very happy with the way things are going. Because of this, I now attend evening language classes in the city of Middelfart (don't laugh), about 45min drive from Assens. Jes has recently been on a work trip to the Middle East and she will be writing a blog about that soon. We are finally starting to book weekends away starting with Oslo in 3 weeks. Looking forward to that! Yesterday we spent the day at Egeskov Slot (Egeskov Castle) which is located in Kværndrup, approximately one hour East ... read more
