Day 4 Monday 22 October 2012
Another early start to catch the train from Stockholm to Copenhagen. Rewarded with a dry walk to the train station, a great way to say farewell to beautiful Stockholm!
The train journey from Stockholm to Copenhagen was pleasant enough – a lot of forests and small towns however not as comfortable as other train journeys – the trip was uneventful until Lund....then an announcement stated there was a malfunction with the train so we were to transfer to another train in Malmo...low and behold 10 mins later we arrived in Malmo and a replacement train was already waiting for us...now that is efficiency to be truly admired!
As soon as I arrived in Copenhagen so did the rain! Today I decided to embrace this rather than be pissed off about it....it certainly makes me appreciate the Scottish weather even more.
Pleased to say the rain did not last long. Following lunch I located the hostel (this one lacked the character of the Swedish one, however it provided all the required comfort & security) and after checking in I ventured out to try and get myself familiarised with
the local sights and assess my plan of action for the following day.
Managed to locate a Greek restaurant for dinner, food was good and they even had my favourite home made halva for desert! An unexpected sight was seeing the Juventus football team getting onto their team bus as they were staying at the centrally located Royal Hotel....which was totally wasted on me since I have no idea who any of their players were, so didn’t even bother taking any photos.
Day 5 Tuesday 23 October 2012
At last the first full day of dry weather on this trip! Decided to do the hop on / off bus first thing to see the main attractions and then visit a couple of the sites on foot.
On the Itenary were the Little Mermaid, several castles and Christiania (hippie commune)...however the highlight of the day was walking up the turret of the Our Saviours church and seeing the brilliant views across the city...stopped counting the steps once I reached 50!!
Rounded off the day by I walking round the Tivoli gardens, which were decorated for October in the Halloween theme....surprised by
the number of restaurants in this place! The rides were mainly for young children however now and again, you would hear a young teenage girl squeal, I guess it is one of those adrenaline buzzes I am not inclined to experience for myself!
Final thoughts
Copenhagen is another very pretty city however the streets are much narrower, the brick work is darker in colour and there are so many sights to see in such a small area that it can be rather overwhelming at times. I would definitely recommend visiting but just spending a few days here and not incorporating another Scandinavian capital on the same trip.
People here were a bit more willing to speak to me than in Stockholm, which was nice. I have to admit though that the amount of bikes definitely freaked me out....looking out for cars is one thing but bikes are a totally different ball game. They would just appear out of nowhere....I guess my childhood trauma has not fully healed…I do however admire their lunatic ability for being able to ride a bike while pushing their children or grocery shopping and at the same time talking
on their mobile and going at speed effortlessly.
Finally the cakes were absolutely amazing and a visit to a patisserie is a must, even if you don’t have a sweet tooth just to check the variety out….definitely my sugar high heaven!
