I had acquired a free ticket through work, to any Finnair destination in Scandinavia. We had originally chosen Oslo and although our tickets were for Oslo, we decided to change to
Copenhagen at the last minute. Finnair was more than happy to accept the tickets. I went with a co-worker named Ryan.
The journey started out in Indianapolis, early on February 2, 2004. I had worked the night before until 2am so I was tired. We flew American Trans Air flight 102, a 757-200 aircraft, from Indianapolis to New York-LGA and arrived about 10am. We then took the airport bus over to JFK airport where we just sat around until the Finnair flight in the late afternoon.
We flew Finnair flight 006, an MD-11 aircraft to Helsinki. The flight was smooth and routine. I was in seat 22J on the aisle. Upon arrival into Helsinki, I really liked the design of the airport and I now consider it one of my favorite airports ever. We actually went into the city for about 6 hours before returning to HEL airport for our flight to CPH. It was very cold out and there was snow on the ground. Later, we boarded a
Finnair Airbus 319 to Copenhagen. That flight was also quick and routine. When we arrived into CPH, we took the train into the city and found our hotel really quick since it was next to the train station. It was the Sofitel Plaza hotel and it was fabulous! We got it for a discounted rate through work of about $80 per night.
We immediately hit the streets to see the city. It was drizzling but not as cold as we thought it would be. It was in the 40s which was warmer than back home.
Our first stop was to the Hard Rock Cafe so I could get my visit out of the way. After that, we just walked around until nightfall.
The next morning we walked around the city more and went out to see the Little Mermaid statue. In the afternoon, we took the train over to Malmo, Sweden and hung out there until dark. We hung out at a real cool little pub called The Bishops Arms. It was across from the train station. When we arrived back into Copenhagen, we went out and did some drinking and regretfully, too much of it! I
really honestly do not know how we made it back to the hotel that night.
Anyway, we paid for it the next morning. It was very difficult waking up at 5am to get our flight to Helsinki. I could not eat anything but drank lots of water. I slept for most of the flights back home. We flew CPH to HEL on Finnair 662, an Airbus 321 and connected to Finnair 005, an MD-11 to New York-JFK.
Once in New York, we flew Delta Connection back to Indianapolis. When we were close to home, the crew announced that Indianapolis was having bad weather and we may have to divert to Dayton. Luckily, we made it in. I really enjoyed this quick little trip, especially since we packed so much into such a little time.
