I remember the gritty, rattling trains, the communist planning and architecture, the bleakness, the eating horse by accident, and the longer-than-anticpated train from there to Budapest.... read more

The Italian tourists were returning to Croatia by 2003, but who can blame them when there are places like Brac, with its peninsular white sand beach and turquoise waters, pristine even with the crowds, and the charming towns prime for an air bnb place in a shoulder season - late May or September.... read more

Amongst the strange and arcane expressions used by British Servicemen is the declaration of approval “Spotty Dog”. It is therefore highly appropriate (and deliberate) that an adventurous training package offered in Theatre which consists of a sailing expedition on the Dalmatian coast is named Exercise SPOTTED DOG. Everyone has the opportunity to go down to the island of Brac for a few days of climbing, walking etc but only the selected few are let loose on a Nicholson 55 yacht and cast adrift for a week away from uniform, razors and the more restrictive Standing Orders. Competition for places is fierce amongst Officers and almost non-existent amongst Junior Ranks: accordingly the crew will either be all Chiefs and no Indians or made up of pressed men. By levels of bribery and corruption that would make an ... read more

Fields of lavender are remembered in a painting still hanging in my bedroom. Extract was sold in the streets and I bought a bottle for a friend but never saw her again. There were rocky beaches with pristine water. I snorkeled here for the first time and avoided sea urchins.... read more

I took the night ferry from Ancona, Italy. We stopped at Split briefly before continuing down the coast to Dubrovnik. There weren't anywhere near as many tourists in early June as when I revisited in mid-summer a few years later: traveling during the shoulder seasons is the way to go here. Dubrovnik quickly became a favorite city, mostly for its position - azure Mediterranean waters cradling the Old Town, with beaches on the edges and steep arid hills arching above. The marble streets and terra cotta roofs (at this point some still destroyed by the recent war) add to the charm, and its proximity to the islands makes it a perfect base for a week.... read more

Here are some photos of our trip to "Yougoslavia". These pictures are of Rijeka, which is now in Croatia. I can't be more precise about the date and trip, as I was only 2 at the time, but I found the pictures and I thought I'd share them anyway. Enjoy. I have some more to post soon.... read more

Ljubiljana was a lunch stop en route from Rijecka and the Postonja Caves to Zagreb. What I knew most about Ljubljana was that it had been the home of my French language professor at university. He told us of his experiences there during World War II, his detention by the Germans, and how he had escaped to France with the coming of the Tito regime. Upon arriving in Zagreb, we checked in at the hostel Esplanade InterContiental. The Esplanade was an old continental style hotel that had been recently renovated by the InterContinental chain. Zagreb marked the end of the tour through Eastern Europe. Most sightseeing was spent in Gradec, the old town. Here were the interesting Palace of the Ban and the 14th century St. Mark's Church. The unique roof tiles on St. Mark's represent ... read more
