Goodbye Komiza. This has been a far from uneventful yacht cruise. This morning the winds were blowing at 30knots from the direction of our planned sail. To add to the raised heart rate the generator which supplied the yachts power was NOT working. A face time technical phone call to Kastella with the yacht company’s electrician rectified the problem. By this time the wind had increased, and the sea was up. I was hoping that we would head into the wind and stick to our plan, however that was not the case. We ran with the wind and the sea rounding the island of Vis and headed into the town of Vis and its safe anchorage.
There were no port tie-ups or docks available so it was a matter of finding a mooring. Easier said than done. Found. Fun and games began … not … watching 2 other large yachts attach to a mooring and the resultant rear stabiliser ropes attached to shore was not pretty due to the wind and current. They gave up. Our turn. With Peter at the helm and Jeff and myself at the bow ready to hook the mooring rope and tie we accomplished it FIRST time
Drawing away from our dock.with a round of applause from yachties watching. It was then into the water I plunged, to swim the rope to shore and tie securely. Current, waterlogged rope, wind and a not-so-fit swimmer made the going across the 100m or so of water tough. To make matters worse, the rope was too short. Stuff me, I’m not going to bloody well drown for some damn rope. Breathing heavily, I released, trod water and settled my breathing. Another length of rope was attached. Same procedure. Still short. 3rd time, Peter gets into the water with flippers and side strokes the rope to me and I continue onto shore. By this stage I am ‘rooted’. Shore consists of sharp, rough rock. I was wearing protective footwear. Up the bank dragging the rope, attaching it to a U bolted rope. Peter joins me and we pull the rope as taut as possible. Securely tied, we return swim to the yacht.
3pm Peasant lunch.
7pm 3 trips complete rubber dinghy transport of all of us to the steep rock waterline. We all walk into Vis and for a few hours, as travellers do, we seek out opportunities to photograph structures and people
Final building glimpse of Komiza.that will be unique to Vis.
The 7 of us rendezvous at an outside restaurant for dinner. We repeat the return to yacht procedure and by 10.30 we were all back on the boat with music, wines, coffee and water aplenty. A late to bunk for everyone.
