The wind did not let up. The Vis bay became packed with yachts seeking safe anchorage. While were away from the yacht the Vis port manager whizzed around on his runabout ordering everyone to vacate their moorings and find another anchorage position on the opposite side of the bay as a fleet of over 50 “Sail Croatia” yachts had booked the mooring area plus other positions. Feedback told me that Peter and the other Skippers were not happy chappies. I had walked back from the town only to find no “Ocean House” and numerous yachts roped together where my yacht had been. I assumed we had been moved … Peter wouldn’t have pulled stumps and left me behind … would he? Jane met me as I was returning to town and to the other side of ... read more

This has been a far from uneventful yacht cruise. This morning the winds were blowing at 30knots from the direction of our planned sail. To add to the raised heart rate the generator which supplied the yachts power was NOT working. A face time technical phone call to Kastella with the yacht company’s electrician rectified the problem. By this time the wind had increased, and the sea was up. I was hoping that we would head into the wind and stick to our plan, however that was not the case. We ran with the wind and the sea rounding the island of Vis and headed into the town of Vis and its safe anchorage. There were no port tie-ups or docks available so it was a matter of finding a mooring. Easier said than done. Found. ... read more

I’ll begin by saying that at this point in time, Komiza is by far my most favourite of places in Croatia. After doing something I haven’t done in years, sleeping over 7 hours straight, I was refreshed and ready to experience what the day would bring. An ocean swim. Swam like I was in my late 20’s early 30’s. Stroke was long and easy, kick fast and strong … all because … the high salt content had me so buoyant. Loved the feeling. Onto a little breakfast before sitting with my legs over the side of a yacht under sail as we cut through a sea so, so rich in its blue. The only thing missing were dolphins leaping out of the water at the bow. At times we could see not a soul in a ... read more

After a fitful night of not sleeping because of a banging door, we got up and readied ourselves for a second day on the beautiful Adriatic. Who cares if you can’t sleep when all one has to do is hang out on a boat. Kirsten made breakfast, as she does on every vacation, and we ate like kings. Scrambled eggs, fruit, chocolate croissants, bread and cheese. It was awesome. The facilities at the port were quite nice, so we were able to use the restrooms and Kirsten even took a shower. Chester and Dan are just fine the way they are. We finally paid up at the port and were off for a day of sailing to our next island. At least, when you rent a sail boat one thinks they will be sailing, but we ... read more

The swim stop is over and we planned on a trip to visit the caves. Unfortunately, the islands had a small water surge and they had to close the caves for safety. So we changed plans and rented a convertible and went exploring! We first stopped in Komiza to go searching for the grandparents home of Denise McLaughlin. We found the place as well as many other beautiful homes. We cruised around the island, stopping for pictures wherever we could. We ended up overlooking the Vis harbor to end the day. ... read more

On a mooring buoy in Vis enjoying a cocktail we were entertained by a solo sailor on what looked like an international canoe with wings and it came out of the water on a hydrofoil. Fast! We have had a couple of excellent sailing days, 20 to 25 knots, hot 29C, and sunny. Vis and Kut are located in a beautiful bay with a long water front and good market and restaurant. Many of the towns have installed mooring buoys which they charge for at various rates which have no apparent relationship to the facilities the provide.... read more

I have to devote an entire blog to my favorite island: Vis! We pulled into Vis town on Tuesday morning. It was going to be a long, fun day. First we docked at a marina and went to shore and walked about a mile to find a place to rent scooters. We got four scooters for the eight of us, with the boys driving. I got to ride with Marko, who had just recently returned from a scooter trip that took him all the way to Spain. Aside from the Vespa in Tuscany, I had never been on a motorized bike thingy. I was a little nervous, but it was so much fun. I was glad I was riding with someone familiar with this as the hills were very windy and there were many cars. Vis ... read more

12 June-15th June Caught train to Ancona via Prato Centrale and Bologna, then the overnight ferry to Split. Had a really lovely breakfast before shopping for the boat and sailing out of the marina. Winds were fresh gusting to 22 knots. With full sail up we made around 10-11 knots and the boat (Lagoon 38 cat) sailed beautifully. We moored at a beautiful village called Stomorska on the Island of Solta. This was my first attempt at “Mediterranean mooring” which involves reversing into the dock without hitting boats either side , tying the stern lines while picking up lazy lines which are submerged lines that you grab from the dock and are attached to mooring lines (also submerged) which attach to the sea floor about 15 metres out from the dock. Someone grabs the lazy line ... read more

by anna (and david) June 14th-20th I don't think we've been back to many places. We like discovering new ones. However, such is our love for this Dalmatian island, this year was the third in a row we have been to Vis (and hopefully there'll be many more visits in the future). Day 1 we met David, Kristi and Finn in Split to get the ferry across to Vis. We were happy to survive the hair raising cab ride there. Seriously, I doubted we'd make it. I was too scared to be able to talk to ask the cabbie to slow down. There is little more to say. Vis for us is all about chilling. Chilling on the balcony. Chilling by the water (beach is a bit generous). Chilling in Vatricia, our favourite restaurant (I think ... read more
