Bansko (Bulgarian: Банско) is a town and ski resort in southwestern Bulgaria, located at the foot of Pirin at an altitude of 925 m above sea level. Bansko is the birthplace of 20th century Bulgarian poet Nikola Vaptsarov and Bulgarian enlighteners Paisiy Hilendarski and Neofit Rilski.... read more

One of Chris Alger's wily investments had seen him purchase a one bedroom apartment in the Bulgarian ski resort of Bansko. So what better way to enjoy this than to cram six of us into the apartment for a 6 day skiing holiday - and as we drew straws for the beds, Chris ended up sharing a futon in the lounge of the apartment that he actually owned! Getting there had been the usual "no-queuing" affair that is always a regular feature with Alger Jnr at the helm. This time we were cutting it so fine to get to the airport that I had to stand in the doors of the airport bus stopping them from shutting to allow Steve to park the car and us to make our flight!! Arriving in Bulgaria the first battle ... read more

Melnik, kt... read more

Its Ian here, currently in Dubrovnik in Croatia and im 30...but lets go back to the heydays of my 20s if i can remember that far back and to Veliko Tarnavo in the middle of Bulgaria which is where we left you. Internet was free last time hence a bit of an essay but im flicking into a more light and breezy manor !! detail is for 20 somethings - they have time!! clock ticking for me now ( notice all the self abuse to deflect anyone elses attempts!!) Bulgaria was brilliant. I really enjoyed it and was one of my favourite places. Loving the food, Shopska Salad, pizzas, loving Zagorka beer, loving the fact that we didnt see a cloud all the time there!.... Veliko Tarnavo is a cracking town, maybe a few too many ... read more

Bulgaria: - A land of just over 7 million people. It has been strange moving from London which has the same population. - Still a couple of steps, well maybe quite a few behind that of Western European countries. - Vesso (who I work with) said to me; ‘so is this your first trip to Bulgaria?’ and on replying yes he said ‘well you will be surprised’ -about what I said? “everything” This has proved to be true on more than one occasion. Bulgarians - Probably the most proud people I have ever met. Especially old Vesso. He is such a character. He keeps going on about how those “fucken Greeks” they stole Feta from us and then patented it even though it is a Bulgarian creation! He is always trying to educate Stu and I ... read more

Finally the day arrived! The most anticipated trip of all! We were all really excited about going snowbording, we had been preparing ourselves for a few months now. Arriving in Sofia we had a driver waiting to take us to Bansko. The ride was rough, long and we really started to wonder if we were going the right direction - we finally got there at ten in the evening. Everyday it was a really early start mainly because we couldn't hold the boys in the chalet for very long. We rented our equipment and up we went to the slopes, that's when we actually realized what we were getting ourselves into and the fact that except for Ant none of us had ever snowboarded. Jana ski's evey winter but she thought that as everyone was ... read more

So my day off. Once a week. Let's explore. So I jumped into my good friend Nadezdahs beat up old Volkswagen and off we went. Razlog first. We parked the car, not without Nadezdah ramming the car into a flower pot and laughing it off. She is such a happy go lucky girl and so so sweet. We wondered the streets which I love to do more than anything when I get to a new place. Stumbled upon a large street market which was so fun. They were selling everything from rubber soled shoes to hand made brush brooms and turksih delight. Next thing we knew we were in an old old Orthodox church. SO beautiful, it truly was. The lady inside was astounded that I was from Ujena Afrika (south africa) She was so lovely ... read more

Living in one of Europe's best ski towns and not trying skiing would be a cardinal sin. I therefore ran across the road to the Salomon ski shop and worked out a nice deal with a gentleman by the name of George which included a four hour ski lesson and all the equipment at a very good price. Nice. Walk the 40m to the gondola lift station in those ridiculous ski boots that make you look like you are walking on the moon. Stood in the long line and spoke for a long time with a fantastic guy from Ireland, reached the front of the cue and realized that I did not have my card on me(never carry it on me in BG) and that I was short 15 levs. Patsy just whipped out a 20, ... read more

Bankso, Bulgaria - where to begin. Well it’s a bit of a long story as to how the hell I ended up in this country selling investment properties to buyers from the UK but hey here I am. The flight on the Air Bulgaria flight from London to Sofia was one of the most harrowing experiences of my life. The outside of the plane looked just fine but once you walked in and saw what was going on it made you think “shit, this could be it’. It was a bit like going back a couple of decades in time to the time of the Iron Curtain. The seats were that plastic blue faux leather, the cabin crew were all dressed differently, there were dirty tissues stuffed between the seats, all the signs were in that ... read more

Here is the first part of several postings about some interesting places to visit in Bulgaria. This Eastern European country is a good place to visit and enjoy both winter (skiing, hiking) and summer (hikinig, swimming) activities. This summer my family and I had a good visit to several nice resourts in Bulgaria and this is a quick write up about it. Bansko is located in the Southwest part of Bulgaria (directly south from the capital Sofia). To get there you have several options. We drove from Plovdiv (the second biggest city in the country located in central south Bulgari). We drove through Pazardzhik and through the Rodopi mountains. Prior to getting to Bansko you will go through the village of Bania. Once you get to Bansko this map will help you navigate and find one ... read more
