The terrain between the border and Trebinje was unusual there was little sign of habitation and the landscape was rocky and desert like which was certainly unexpected for this part of the world, but soon began to change as we came closer. On the outskirts of town we stopped at a service station for a coffee and to orientate ourselves a little before turning back down the highway and heading back towards the town centre where we took a right rather than the left we should have and ended up back near the service station although the drive through the outskirts of town were scenic. We then headed back to the town centre and headed left which took us to the older part of town where we hoped to find the Arslanagic bridge which fords the ... read more

After our fast departure from Ostrava, we had 5 hours to go to our first stop : Graz in Austria. The road was clear and we only had a little traffic jam but nothing too bad. On the road, Anne checked Graz for hostels but she couldn't find anything. In the end, we found a nice and cheap hotel near the city centre with parking (THE most important feature we wanted) and when we arrived, we saw that it was a wonderful hotel, much more worth than what we had paid. We were really happy, but a hot shower and a nice, comfortable bed were the only things that interested us after ice-cold showers at the camping in Ostrava. We went to the city centre and when we finally found a nice restaurant, we were so ... read more

About one year ago my mom heard about Bosnian pyramids which have healing energy tunnels. Then I read on the internet about that pyramids and I found out that they are really interesting and that might be worth to go to Bosnia and see them. And so we went… After a long night drive with not very comfortable bus we finely came to Visoko, 30 km away from the capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina - Sarajevo. First we went with our local guide to the hill from where you can see 213 m high hill named Visočica. Amateur archeologist dr. Semir Osmanagić discovered it in year 2005 and named it the Pyramid of the Sun, because of its proper geometry. It was build about 12.000 years ago. In the neighborhood they also found similar pyramids ... read more

As we got to the bus station and saw all the rusty buses, we thought that it was going to be a very long 2,5h trip... There was one flashier looking bus in the middle of it all and we thought that surely we couldn't be that lucky to get that one? It turned out that yes we were! And soon after we were on our way to Sarajevo. And what a beautiful road that was! As soon as we left Mostar, we started driving through a very scenic river canyon. I wish I could say more about that journey but as soon as Millie fell asleep in my arms, so did I... We woke up half way and the views didn't disappoint from there on either. Driving in between the rocky hills, with some snowy ... read more

Today was occupied with driving from Kotor to Sarajevo. Although it sounds rather mundane, it was in fact a journey of great beauty and pleasure. We had programmed our GPS units to take us through Durmitor National Park, and that trip was magnificent, and somewhat unexpectedly so. We had anticipated mountains but did not know that most of the trip through the park would be on very narrow roads wide enough really for one car but with two-way traffic. Rounding bends with no visibility around the bend was frequently an adventure. But with risks come great rewards. This was one of the most spectacular travel days we have had, and I think by general consensus the best of this trip. The narrow winding road snakes upward to high mountain valleys, meadows, and bowls, punctuated along the ... read more

With the sun barely up we shuffled onto the bus, as Zoe and the mammoth continued to doze I sat in awe as the incredible delights of Bosnia’s countryside passed by. Having attempted several photographs to show it’s splendour the speed of travel and the winding roads didn’t allow me to capture it properly. Woolly says – I wasn’t dozing I was thinking! I knew that Jo was excited to be visiting Sarajevo, the capital city and as I joined her in admiring the views along the Miljacka River the wonders just kept coming. It was a stark contrast pulling into a small town and seeing the pockmarked buildings once more. Having seen so much of the troubles and struggles that the city had under gone on the news through out the early 90’s I knew ... read more

After a great visit in Cacak Serbia we are on our way to Sarajevo, why? Well I guess I remember the Olypics there and wanted to see it. So we set our Garmin and off we went, now with no horn in our car. Enjoyed the stunning scenery along the way even if it was a bit raining. Bosnia has recovered from the war better near the sea than in the east, Sarajevo was a bit of a shocker to see, still bullet holes visable in the walls of buildings, still standing are partially destroyed apartment buildings and homes. Driving in it looks like a typical city of the west but a closer look shows the saddness of it all. The people going on about their lives amongest the rubble and distruction , no money to ... read more

Off on a walking tour this morning. Meet our guide, Nella. All good until Viktor butts in to have his say on something which I think starts a mini war between the 2 of them. Never mind. Walk the old town, through the catholic cathedral Jewish synagogue and outside one of the mosques (can't go in during Ramadan). finish walk without too much more friction between the 2 guides, but we still have a tunnel and war museum to go. Onto the bus for our next bit. Nella starts talking then Viktor grabs the mic to say something, tension..... Then Guisseppe has trouble navigating the streets he came in on yesterday and Viktor takes over again. A bit like a 3 ring circus. Get to tunnels which are right beside the airport. Go in and sit ... read more

First "bags out" this morning. Right on time and the porter arrived as we put the 2nd bag out so big tick for us.... On to the bus and seat rotation has us in the front seat behind Guisseppe our Italian driver. Good spot you say, not quite. Guiseppe is not the best driver and there are several pieces of spectacular driving of which more will come in later parts of this blog. Any hoo, away via the port. 4 cruise ships in today so lucky we did our tours the last few days. Onto the new suspension type bridge out of Dubrovnik on our way to Sarajevo Via Moston (old capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina). All going well, get to the border and there are 3 buses in the queue in front of us so ... read more
