Once the center of power for the large Austro-Hungarian Empire, Austria was reduced to a small republic after its defeat in World War I. Following annexation by Nazi Germany in 1938 and subsequent occupation by the victorious Allies in 1945, Austria's status remained unclear for a decade. A State Treaty signed in 1955 ended the occupation, recognized Austria's independence, and forbade unification with Germany. A constitutional law that same year declared the country's "perpetual neutrality" as a condition for Soviet military withdrawal. Following the Soviet Union's collapse in 1991 and Austria's entry into the European Union in 1995, some Austrians have called into question this neutrality. A prosperous, democratic country, Austria entered the Economic and Monetary Union in 1999. To be updated

Musical Salzburg

Europe » Austria » Salzburg State » Salzburg
Salzburg is a quaint city set on a river with heaps of churches and lovely cobbled shopping streets all kept in the old style with no modern signage (makes a nice change). It has great atmosphere with many buskers lining the streets and squares. Salzburg seems to be the capital of music, being the home of Mozart and the setting for many Sound of Music scenes. The Mirabell Gardens are lovely to stroll through and even better when you pretend you’re characters from Sound of Music! We were absolute tourists when we joined up for the Sound of Music tour - [View Full Entry]

Tuesday, 8/26 We began the day with a class wrap-up of Mauthausen. It's a rather contentious issue even amongst my own class, so we ended up spending the entire class period discussing concentration camps and the Holocaust. We talked about the surrounding city, and the idea of what they did and didn't know during the war. My professor discussed life in a totalitarian state (like the Nazi regime) and how, historically, they are important to avoid because they're incredibly difficult to come out of. I'm supposed to discuss why and how the Holocaust happened, and who the perpetrators are. H [View Full Entry]

Yes, there was only one reason we visited Salzburg, not Mozart the most famous composer of our time, but the Sound of Music!! The Von Trapp family rules when it comes to Kathryn. A whole glorious day trapped in a bus with a bunch of nutters, one a very camp 8 year old boy who skipped and sang his little heart out, right to the end. The tour guide, dressed in her traditional outfit, tried her very best to get the whole bus singing along. Yes it was a wonderful day for some. I kind of had a small victory the [View Full Entry]

This will be short and sweet as we only spent the one night in Vienna and by this time we were a bit fed up of old buildings and streets full of designer shops. Vienna is very pretty, another great location for a weekend break with famous coffee houses, a little expensive, and cheap rather large portioned dinners. Maybe with more time and money we would have gone to a classical concert or an opera, both which Vienna is famous for. Another time another day!! [View Full Entry]

salzburg goes something like this... friday morning catrina and i were both kind of motivated. we like to call it our post budapest depression. we just really missed our hostel, as the one here is much more generic and actually has rules. just feels kind of stuffy. and everything just seems so expensive here. so the first thing we did was go to the train station and book our ride to brindisi, in the south of italy, to then catch the ferry to greece. we leave this morning in fact! so after we did that, we headed to old town and [View Full Entry]

Vienna

Europe » Austria » Vienna State » Vienna
We arrived in Vienna (last) Thursday afternoon. The train ride from Ljubljana was just over five hours. One of the first things I noticed about Vienna is how incredibly clean the city is, which is especially impressive considering its size---around 1.8 million people. It is a great city to just stroll around in and you could spend several days just wandering and taking in the city's impressive architecture and numerous parks and gardens. Vienna is definitely more commercial and there is a more modern influence here than most of the places I have visited in Eastern Europe. Another general p [View Full Entry]

As Nadine pointed out, after a 2 week beak of writing I owe it to you guys who are actually keeping up with me to update a bit more. This is also perfect timing to write as this afternoon we are boarding a train to Brindisi and then taking the ferry to Corfu. the whole journey is going to last over 36 hours but we are both soo excited to get to greece and just stay there for the next 2 weeks!!! Salzburg has had some ups and downs. As anyone who read my last post regarding Budapest can probably tell, [View Full Entry]

Off to get the yearly fix of snowboarding we journeyed to Innsbruck in Austria. Innsbruck town is nestled inbetween 5 or so different mountains so everywhere we looked there was stunning scenery and we were keen to get out onto the slopes. Our first mission hit us trying to find out how to get to them. The bus system was rather random and many locals couldnt actually tell us where to catch them from. We eventually found some skiiers and followed them to some station and jumped on a random bus hoping we would end up at some snow. Fortunatley it [View Full Entry]

Friday, 8/22 We woke up early on Friday morning to meet the bus at 8am. I planned on sleeping the entire bus ride (2.5 hours) to the concentration camp, so I brought my neck pillow and earplugs. We jumped on the bus and I promptly curled into a little ball and fell asleep. I woke up right as we arrived at the camp. Everyone was a lot quieter than normal as we walked to the visitor center. Some of us wandered over to the cafe to grab some food before our tour- scheduled for noon. Mauthausen was the main concentration camp [View Full Entry]

arrived in salzburg last evening and have yet to explore. so i will conclude my hungary experience. monday catrina and i went to siofok, a beach town on lake balaton. very touristy, it looked like we walked into the film set of a very stereotypical spring break. we didnīt mind. we figured a relaxing day on the beach could prep us for greece! before settling down though, we did take a sailboat tour of the lake. such a beautiful colour the water is...very greenish turquoise. so peaceful. then we found some lounge chairs, parked ourselves, then ordered a drink. why not?
