Today we experienced a veritable heat wave in Vienna, with temperatures reaching the mid-40s, with sunshine and clear, blue skies! If this weather continues, we may need to buy some sunscreen and summer shorts! We felt the difference as we walked to the tram stop, and by the time we sat down for lunch at an outdoor terrace in the Naschmarkt, it was actually quite comfortable. The Naschmarkt is Vienna's most popular market. Located at the Wienzeile over the Wien River, it stretches for almost a mile. This market has existed since the 16th-century, when mainly milk bottles were sold. Since milk bottles, at the time, were made out of ash (wood from an ash tree), "Asch" (German for "ash") led to the name "Aschenmarkt". From 1793 onwards, all fruits and vegetables brought to Vienna with ... read more

The weather forecast today called for slightly warmer temperatures, with a bit of sunshine in the afternoon. But as we would soon discover, low 30s and the wind in our faces while walking made for a chilling experience. So this morning, in an effort to minimize walking, we opted for a taxi ride (instead of the tram) to reach the Belvedere palaces and museum, located on the southeastern edge of the city center. The two Belvedere palaces, referred to as the Upper and Lower, were built in the early 18th-century by the famous Baroque architect Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt to be used as the summer residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy (1663–1736). The entire complex, including extensive gardens, is one of Europe’s most dazzling Baroque landmarks, and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Prince ... read more

The weather has been so cold in Vienna since our arrival that we hibernated in our warm and cozy apartment this past weekend. On Sunday, we awoke to find a dusting of snow covering our back patio, and this morning the temperature was a frigid 23 degrees Fahrenheit! Our thin Florida blood is having a difficult time coping with these conditions, and neither of us can remember when we last experienced sub-freezing temperatures. But we decided to bite the bullet today, dressed as warmly as we could, and at 10:00 AM walked to the nearby tram station for a ride into the Old City to visit the Hofburg, the former residence of the Habsburg monarchy. With our teeth chattering, and shivering from head to toe, we arrived at the Albertina Platz, a small square near the ... read more

The weather since our arrival has been in the 40s and low-50s, with dreary, overcast skies; and we were greeted this morning by a steady rainfall. We had ventured out of the apartment yesterday, to the local grocery store and tabac to buy tickets for use on the trolley and subway systems, but otherwise rested our weary bones. So we decided to brave the elements today, hop on a tram (Straßenbahn) at a nearby stop, and then visit a few of the signature sights within the inner core of Vienna. While waiting for the tram, I had an opportunity to practice my rusty German language skills with a local resident waiting for the same train. So far, I've been able to make myself understood, which has been somewhat of a pleasant surprise, because it has been ... read more

Today we said good-bye to Sorrento (and southern Italy), flying from Napoli to Vienna, home of the famous Wiener Schnitzel, and former seat of the Austro-Hungarian empire on the banks of the mighty Danube river in Austria. But before our mid-afternoon flight, we enjoyed a brief farewell visit to Francesco and Anna Ruggiero at their home. The Ruggiero property, surrounded by its vegetable gardens and fruit trees, has a nice view of the surrounding hills, and is tucked away off the beaten track in Piano di Sorrento. Francesco gave us a tour of the house and their extensive garden, complete with artichokes, fennel, beans, lettuce, onions, tomatoes and many other vegetables that have or will soon be planted; they also have lemon, orange, peach, and cherry trees on the property. Anna made us all coffee, and ... read more

We started our morning with a bus tour pretty much just around the ring road - literally a road that rings around the Old Town. We drove by a lot of statues and important buildings. We also drove by Stadtpark which gave me an idea for later. We then stopped at a Hundertwasser building - a famous artist/architect. Hundertwasser House is a low-income apartment but decorated/created in a very unique and quirky style. Different apartments are different colours, there's all these random details on the outside, it's all green-space on top, and there's not a single straight-line anywhere. I loved it. I also loved watching the kids... we had about 15 min there and honest to God they spent more time taking pictures with a red phone booth (like what they have in London) than they ... read more

Our first full day on board and true to Jochim’s word, four full coaches left promptly at 8am on a Panoramic tour of Budapest city with a stop in the Castle District, a ½ hour walking tour culminating in some free time. Five minutes after we had waved 139 passengers off, the gangway was raised and we cast off. The 30 or so remaining guests onboard sat back and enjoyed the three-hour trip to rendezvous with the tour buses at Visegrád, some 50km upstream. We passed the magnificent Hungarian Parliament building, its clean white façade and characteristic gothic style reflecting the morning sun. A few minutes later we sailed under Margrit Bridge then passed by Margrit Island on our left. At 1.5 miles long, this island provides a peaceful hideaway from hectic downtown Budapest with large green ... read more

My buddy Mike was not too interested in getting from city to city on a rail pass. Me, on the other hand, really enjoy the easy pace of rail travel, meeting people, taking photos, and just taking in the vibe of the landscape. But the idea behind rail passes in Europe is to make travel EASY! Not only do they offer flexibility and reduced fares, they also provide discounts on cruises, hotels, museums, and ferries. For this trip, I am buying a Central Europe Triangle Pass, three one way rail trips between any popular cities in Europe. I will start in Budapest, head over to Vienna for a few days, then on to Munich for a few days. I will end the journey in Frankfurt, where I will fly home on the 18th. Or I may ... read more

So, it feels like Germany, they speak German, and mostly, they act German. One thing for sure, they love their ice cream and cigarettes. What a combination! My German speaking, or lack thereof, is coming back so very slowly. The brain cells are still there. They think we have gone bonkers with Trump. My hotel, the Ruby Marie on MariahilferStrasse is way too hip for me. Totally paperless, tablets everywhere, why don't we all do this? Only an ice cream joint would serve beer here. Friday night, time for wurst, kebabs, or ?? With beer and some apple strudel for dessert? The train ride here was uneventful, except for one thing. The locomotive died about 20 minutes outside of Budapest. An hour or so later, we got another, and proceeded to stay an hour off schedule. ... read more

Have I waltzed in Vienna before? Perhaps back in 1971, on my very first trip to Europe, with a magical young maiden I met in Zurich? The trip is now a distant memory, perhaps real, perhaps imagined. Does it really matter? If you love music, this is the perfect city. More famous composers have lived here than any other city. But it is not confined to classical and opera. Music spans all genres here, including pop and rock. After all, it is called the City of Music! Once somewhat disreputable, the Viennese waltz epitomizes Vienna thanks to Johann Strauss. His Blue Danube Waltz, the highlight of every ball since, became famous internationally. Vienna has a museum dedicated solely to the Strauss family history and music. Following on the coattails of Strauss comes the Vienna Boys Choir, ... read more
