Dear Blog Readers, Has a month gone by so quickly? I'm making a habit of writing these blogs on flights back to Blighty...this time making the mistake of booking the flight exactly as the England (B Team) kick off against the Belgians. The pilot has yet to provide an update other than the flight time and the weather expected at Heathrow...disappointing. So where do we pick this up from? We had a marvellous week away in Trisant with Rob and Meg. The highlight being an expertly caught fish on the infamously difficult Glandwgan lake...which involved me holding the rod between my legs as I took my jacket off in the sunshine to suddenly see the tip of it shaking vigorously. It was also cracking to see our regular 'neighbours' on holiday, expert angler Adrian and his ... read more

Up early for a bus tour of Vienna, culminating in a visit to the Schönbrunn Palace. The bus takes us through the centre of the old city, then circumnavigates the core on the ring road, which follows the path of the old city walls. An interesting aspect of the ring road is that it has a centre lane originally for carriages and now used by motor vehicles, a second lane originally for riders on horseback and now used by bicycles, and a third outside lane for pedestrians. Vienna is absolutely gorgeous. Our guide has us looking left and right, left and right as wonderful buildings, each worthy of hours of inspection, file by on either side faster than one can keep track them. I have to admit that I am surprised by the prevelance of graffiti ... read more

We wake up cruising down the Danube. We are heading northwest upstream, against the current. It's a beautiful day, no clouds, slight haze in the air. It promises to be a scorcher. The whole of Central Europe has been experiencing a heat wave, with day after day in the high 20s, quite unusual for this time of year. Around mid-morning, we pass slowly by Bratislava, capital of Slovakia, on the east bank. The outskirts of the city are somewhat shabby, but the town centre itself looks attractive. There is a beautiful, obviously reconstructed citadel at the highest point. Bratislava is definitely a city that we may want to visit someday. We continue along the Danube. It is very pleasant to watch the scenery and the small picturesque towns go by. They are all variations on a ... read more

Although this journey wasn’t one of our longest ventures through the airports we were feeling pretty shattered. The main reason was our 10 hour layover in Dubai airport in the middle of the night. We were hoping to find a sneaky corner to snuggle down and catch some zzz’s but Dubai airport was absolutely heaving with people. The tannoy system was shouting out different flight numbers non stop and almost all the seats in the waiting area were taken. Char managed about 3 hours but Jack only got 2. Still, we got through it and before long we had touched down in Bratislava. Char had been to Bratislava inter-railing when she was younger but didn’t really remember much about the place. It seemed the reason for this was because it was a bit crappy. So we ... read more

Today we stayed in Vienna and went through the Imperial and Ecclesiastical Treasury of the Hofburg. I cannot way enough about this museum as it is just too much for words. During the Hapsburg empire, the were many sub-kingdoms including Slovinia, Hungary, Poland, Chez Republic, and others. Each had royalty which was subservient to the Hapsburg ruler. This museum starts with the vestments and crowns from many of these kingdoms. It include man y royal garments, including, at the end of the tour, rooms full of vestments from the Order of the Golden Fleece. Some of the relics date back to the 600's AD. In the Ecclesiastical section, I, as a Cristian, was simply overwhelmed by the relics, which included pieces of the cross, parts of the crown of thorns, and a nail used to crucify ... read more

Vienna on a Sunday. Blue sky. Old world charm lured us into a collection of art that is beyond comprehension. We visited the Vienna Treasury which is considered the cradle of imperial collections. Jewels, tabards, swords, crowns and icons inspiring such awe as I cannot possibly convey. Jack had shared a photo on Facebook of an icon that holds a nail from the cross of Christ. A commenter to this post replied that this museum contains enough nails and wood of the cross to build an ark. Do we know? Did those long ago KNOW when HE walked the earth? Just by happenstance, we crossed paths with the Lipizzaner stallions being stabled after their Sunday performance. Up close and personal! My favorite memory, so far! We attempted a night at the opera...word of wisdom, the standing ... read more

We started the day with breakfast in our small hotel. The breakfast was very good, everything cooked there. The hidden gem of this hotel is it's location in the inner city, just minutes from all the important sites. We spent the morning at the Hofburg palace seeing the Spanish Riding School and the Lipazzaner horses and the amazing show they put on. We then finished at the Hofburg palace museums, which included the apartments of this dynasty decorated and furnished as they were then. In addition, the museum included quite a lot of information about Sissi, the young Bavarian girl who became queen of Austria and an exhibit of the enormous amount of silver and china used in the daily life of the monarchy. Room after room, including large wooden boxes of silver and china taken ... read more

Vienna is splendid! The Spanish Riding School in Vienna is renowned for the all-white Lipizzanner stallions. Four hundred years ago, these horse were trained for combat. In modern day, the Lipizzanner training continues for show and the stallions perform in a glorious, chandelier adorned arena to the sounds of Richard Strauss. A lovely and impressive show of horsemanship. The first year a woman has been elected as a full-rider of the Lipizzanners in 2018. Interesting fact, the Lipizzaners are born dark brown (called bay). As the Lipizzanner foals matures, their coats turn white. Only about 1 in 100 ponies remain a dark bay at maturity. It is the legend that the bay Lipizzanner joins the white stallion brigade as a good luck charm and the troop will continue as long as a bay remains in the ... read more

Today we left Munich and hit the road to Vienna. We decided to take in some sights along the way. We stopped along the A8 Autobahn, the trip I made each Monday morning on the way to work for the week in Traunreaut. It is a beautiful stretch of highway. Then we decided to try to tour the Herrinchiemsee, the Mad King Ludwig II castle on the lake. After trying to find to so-called signs in the city of Prien, and not seeing anything, we gave up and went on our way. I am sure it is beautiful. We drove by my old place of work, Siteco Beleuchtungstechnik, where I spent 3 years of my working life. I still have fond memories and it was certainly a deja vu experience. We then drove the short 45km ... read more

Jack and I managed to turn a 5 hour drive to Vienna from Munich into a 10 hour drive today. Not everyone can do such a feat. Along the way we searched for the island castle of King Ludwig, "Herrenchiemsee". We never found the elusive road sign to signal us to turn to catch the ferry to the island where the castle still sits long after its mad (as in crazy) owner has gone. The car GPS instead lead us to a boat ramp used for the multitude of sail boats on the Chiemsee. We then took a quick side trip to Traunreut to visit Jack's former office, nice memory lane experience. Next stop Salzburg for some overdue lunch and obligatory photo ops of the local culture. We most inadvertently saw some of the sights that ... read more
