Monday, 17th April 2017 Words could hardly hide our excitement as the sun rose through the ranks of the city's skyline this morning. The beautiful scene existed only for a very brief moment before the sun went up high into the sky like a typical day. First up was our Le Crobag breakfast which we inherited from our Munich tradition. Familiar tastes and familiar coffee made a great start for our day in Vienna. From our hotel, we walked to the nearby Museum of Military History about 20 minutes easy stroll away. This is a huge impressive building where the exhibits are arranged in a chorological order from the early European wars to modern warfare. A must go for military buffs and we spent a great deal of our time within the museum compound including a ... read more

Sunday, 16th April 2017 After 3 nights in Munich, we started the first leg of our rail journey across Central Europe today. First up is the city of Vienna, the capital of Austria which lies some 400km east of Munich. We boarded the comfortable RailJet, RJ65 for the 4-hour journey and arrived at Vienna sometime after 3.30pm today. Lunch was settled on-board at the dining car which was a great experience for us. Vienna that greeted us this afternoon was forward looking. The main train station was modern and spacious. For a while, we thought we were in some train stations in Japan. The crowds were thin and it was really easy to find our way to the hotel which was just opposite the station. The streets were well-paved and really clean. We had a room ... read more

Well after getting stuck on the autobahn for hours, we figured it could not get any worse. It did not but it came close. Winding through tiny villages in Germany we were really looking forward to Austria. As we were winding through little German villages we finally got to the border for the dreaded "vignette". Think of it as an EZ pass with the difference that you have to stand in line (it was about an hour) and pay for it before you could continue on. Driving without it is not an option as they fine you up the ying yang (or so I read). With the vignette finally in hand we were just ready to get there. We finally made it to the Marriott Hotel in Linz. Marriott is generally our benchmark - if we ... read more

Arrived in Vienna on the Christmas evening and set off early the next day for a guided bus/walking tour of the city. Bus took us past some of the more notable sites and I was just so impressed with the size and cleanliness of the buildings. As our guide said, kept the brocket and stone masons in business during the construction phase. Soon grew tired of our guide when we started the walking tour so there was a breakaway group of 7 of us who decided to explore the city on our own. All of the shops were closed except for souvenir shops and cafes. Found Hard Rock for Bruce so he could get his pins, then we all headed off to Cafe for coffee and cake. After that we all spilt up, a couple back ... read more

Attended church service at the little Blue Church this morning. Beautiful service in German - only recognised one word: "Bethlehem". Made our way back to ship after church for the concert on board before lunch. We had a small local group of performers join us from Salzburg who sang some traditional AustrIan Christmas Carols and also the usual carols. They sang Silent Night in German and It was just beautiful. The meals on board for Christmas were a surprise - and not in a good way. We thought they would put on a fairly big smorgasbord but they stuck with a la carte menu and I couldn't find anything on offer that inspired me so I had a burger through room service. Set sail for Vienna after lunch and arrived about an hour earlier than expected. ... read more

It seems the longer I'm home, the harder it is to get at finishing my blog. Countries and continents away -- and a week later -- it's hard to remember what we did already. We went to a different place every day. We saw new things every day. It was amazing, and almost overwhelming. I haven't talked at all about the ship. It was always there, warm and waiting for us to come back with tired feet and sore backs, and cameras full of pictures. Dinner was always a three course affair, with appetiser, main course, and dessert. And the wine flowed freely too. The food was great, and the staff treated us like royalty. The only thing I could have wished for is more time. I didn't have enough energy to cram in everything that ... read more

We set our alarms to wake us up early this morning, as we were scheduled to sail through the scenic Wachau Valley in the state of Vienna, country of Austria. Unfortunately, heavy fog blanketed the valley, obscuring some of the farther sights, and shrouding the buildings close to the water in fog. It almost looked like the scene from a scary movie, with the old buildings surrounded by fog. Ruined castles, medieval towns, and churches, all made for an interesting and pretty cruise through this part of Austria. If you look closely, you can see some of the hillsides covered with rows of grapevines. It's winter here, so there are no leaves on the plants and they stand as bare sticks in terraced rows across the hillsides. It seems strange to me, with it being winter, ... read more

Geo: 48.2179, 16.3829This morning, after a bit of a lie in, we headed off into the city centre. Luckily it's not too far of a walk so off we trotted. Our first port of call was the Stradpark - this was a pretty little park with a pond. We walk through this park and continued the walk on the ring road, until we reached the Karlsplatz. Which housed the first little Christmas market, but we arrived too early and it was still closed. However, there was a beautiful church which was so beautiful and well crafted. Continuing on we passed an opera house which once again was a beautiful grand building. There we arrived at Theresien-platz which in between two gorgeous buildings was the next little Christmas market, this one was open so we browsed the ... read more

A day in Vienna. A pretty city, not a lot of graffiti and lots of very old ornate buildings.Had a guided tour of the city and then the palace after lunch. We couldn't take photos inside the palace but could in the gardens etc. Lots of cafes and restaurants, not every shop,is open today because it's Sunday. (Might be just as well as our bags are bursting) We are heading out for a Waltz show after tea, should be interesting. Well.......the show was great. A bit of culture and a taste of Vienna, we really enjoyed it. Next brekkie and off to Innsbruck and Salzburg.... read more

As we go into the alps of northern Italy the temperature has dropped to around 13 cel. Brrrr, left jersey in suitcase - bugger. Ok in coach tho. The scenery is stunning, a bit damp but a bigger version of the South Island in NZ and the houses dotted here and there are made of stone. You can see the old roads winding thru the mountains, thank goodness they have got a new one cut right thru. The old houses in the countryside are abandoned, which we find weird. Why not tear them down instead they leave them to rot. Stopped for a break, then on our way again about 10kms down the road we crossed the boarder. Arrivederci Italy Helllooooo Austria. The landscape is very different, clean green, just lovely. No old rotting buildings, lots ... read more
